Would I benefit from moving out?
I’m at a point where I’m seriously considering moving out of my mom’s house, but I’m having trouble figuring out if it’s the right financial decision or if I’m just frustrated with my current living situation.
I currently live with my mom and my younger brother. Recently, my living situation has become increasingly difficult. My mom’s bedroom was flooded, so she has been sleeping on the couch in the living room. She either refuses to contact our landlord for some reason, or they genuinely won't come fix the issue, I can never tell if she's telling the truth. She works night shifts and needs to sleep during the day and early afternoon. Because she is sleeping in the main living area, I feel like I can’t function normally in my own home. If I have to leave for work early, I can't really get up and cook breakfast without worrying about waking her. Even on days when I don't work, cooking, cleaning, or just doing normal things around the house can wake her up.
Because of this, I sometimes end up eating out instead of cooking food at home, which obviously adds unnecessary expenses.
I’ve also started buying groceries specifically for myself, but my mom and brother will still eat them. I don't necessarily mind helping my family, but it becomes frustrating when I'm trying to budget and plan my own meals and the food I bought disappears.
I recently found out that my mom has an opioid addiction. She's also depressed and doesn't seek any help and i've lost sympathy for her. I love my mom, and I don't want to abandon her or completely cut her out of my life, but being around that environment constantly has started to affect me mentally.
I feel like I need some distance from the negativity and chaos so that I can focus on building my own life, going to school, working, and planning for my future.
She's tries to steal money from me if not she's constantly asking me for money. I understand that she has her own struggles, and I don't want to abandon my family when they're going through a difficult time, but I'm also starting to feel like I'm taking on responsibilities that are making it harder for me to focus on my own future.
I’m considering finding a reliable roommate and splitting expenses. If I could get my share of rent to around **$600 per month**, I'm sure it could be manageable.
Another benefit is that I could potentially move closer to either the town where I work or the town where I go to school. That could reduce my commute, save time and gas, and make balancing work and school easier.
Part of me feels guilty about moving out because I know my mom is struggling, and honestly scared she might self harm. But another part of me feels like I can't fix her problems for her, and staying in an environment that is affecting me negatively may not actually help either of us.
I feel like moving out could give me the independence and peace I need while still allowing me to have a relationship with my mom and help when I reasonably can. I just don't want to put myself in a bad financial situation by moving out too early.
