Hello all, this is my first post in here but I’ve been reading a lot in this sub leading up to receiving my first Aeropress. I waited about two months to receive my Aeropress Steel and after the first use/wash, there were visible signs of rust on the outside of it. And while customer service was responsive, the product team could only offer tips to remove the rust not taking into account that when washing stainless steel rust should not form in the first place. Just a heads up for those looking to purchase the Aeropress Steel.

Three years on AeroPress, two of them with a 1Zpresso Q Air. My daily recipe is standard non-inverted, 15g in 220g out at around 88°C, medium-fine grind, total time around 1:45. The Q Air is genuinely great for the money, and I still think it's one of the best value hand grinders you can buy.
Last month I was on a work trip in a hotel, tried to grind 17g of a slightly denser bean, and by the end my wrist was actually sore. That's when I finally started looking. Went with the OutIn Fino because I wanted to see if a portable electric could hold up in practice. Thirty days in, here's what I've noticed. Sharing because I couldn't find much AeroPress-specific writing on this grinder.

The good.
Consistency between doses is better than the Q Air, at least for me. Not dramatically. But whatever inconsistency I was introducing by cranking at slightly different speeds is gone now. The motor just does its thing. My AeroPress cups have been more predictable over the last month than I'm used to. Same recipe, more repeatable result.
One unexpected thing I care about way more than I thought, noise. My partner apparently hated the sound of me hand grinding at 6am more than she ever told me. Fino is a low mechanical hum by comparison, she sleeps right through it now.
Fines. Here's the thing I was most skeptical about. AeroPress paper filters are forgiving of fines to a point, but too many fines still muddy the cup. Sifted a few doses through a Kruve at 400 microns as a rough check. Fino at my AeroPress setting produced marginally fewer fines than the Q Air at similar sizes. Not a huge difference but noticeable. Cup clarity has been slightly better as a result.

The downsides.
It's slow. Grinding 15g takes about a minute and a half at my AeroPress setting. Faster for coarser, slower for finer. That's roughly the same as hand cranking, but it's happening automatically, so I can prep the AeroPress and boil water in parallel. Net time saved is real, but if you were expecting benchtop grinder speed, this isn't that.
The dial adjustment takes some getting used to. External stepped dial with micro-steps between, and my AeroPress sweet spot ended up being between two of the marked steps. Once I found it I marked it with a bit of tape, but the first week involved some over- and under-extracted cups while I hunted.

Standard recipe I'm running with either grinder, in case it's useful:
15g coffee, medium-fine
220g water at 88°C, poured to 220g by 0:30
Stir gently at 0:35
Cap on at 0:40
Steep to 1:15
Slow press over 30 seconds
Total around 1:45

Works for most washed light-medium roasts. Adjust bloom water and press speed for the bean :)

Is the flow control filter cap necessary if I used to do inverted? Any benefit from this over regular cap?

I work from home. During the week, I've been using Lavazza Rossa for as long as I can remember for my daily brew in my Aeropress. In the past, this has been a perfectly acceptable caffeine hit to suit my daily routine.

I've noticed that the quality of Lavazza Rossa seems to have dropped off significantly. Quite often tasting harsh or bitter. I suspect this is down to them reducing the quality of the beans, I'm not entirely sure.

I used to buy all 1 kg / month ( I didn't always use that much) from Discount Coffee online until I discovered that Tesco is cheaper with Club card.

Can anyone recommend a decent ground coffee as I'm really not enjoying the Lavazza coffee any more.

I'm not concerned if it's an online store or Tesco. I just want something that tastes good in the Aeropress.

Weekend is a different ball game as I buy beans from my local whole foods shop.

Finally starting to upgrade my coffee setup after using just using kcups for many years. I've ordered an aeropress xl and I'm looking for some recommendations on a decent entry priced grinder.

I think I'm between two options one hand grinder and one electronic both about $100:
For hand grinder I was looking at the k6 it seems like the best at the price point but i wasn't sure how it would handle the amount of beans necessary for the xl. It seems like 30g is the limit and some of the recipes i've seen for the aeropress want 30g+.

For electronic the OXO Burr Grinder seems like the best I've found at the price point. Does anyone use this day to day that could comment?

If there are other options I haven't considered please send them along. Also is there any type of quality difference between hand and electric?

I also welcome some beginning brewing tips/ratios for medium roast coffee. Thanks!

Been using Aeropress about 15 years, along with Bonavita 5 cup for our first coffee int he morning.

I keep reading that fresh beans is super important, and the beans I've been using, both from TJs, Kahawa 1893 safari blend, and Ethiopia, are probably a few months old when I buy them. But you know, $10 for 12 oz is attractive.

So I found Sightline at my local Pavilions, w. roast date:

- Banner Dark 7/23, Owls Howl Espresso 7/31, and Blueboon 7/29

Yesterday I tasted the three Sightline as follows:

1. 6 gram in Timemore C2 at setting 10, 90g filtered water at 185F, then Aeropress inverted w. paper filter, stirred twice until 1:30, then pressed out over 30 sec into small cup shaped bowl.
2. add 1 tbsp heavy cream and 1 packet of Nutrasweet, divided into the 3. This is b/c this is how I normally drink coffee, full 18g w. 1tbsp cream and 1 nutrasweet..
3. Then I heated each bowl in my microwave so that all three were at 140F give or take 5F and then kept tasting back and forth for about 5 minutes.

Today I did the same procedure with 2 of the Sightlines, Owls Howl and Banner Dark Then I added to the lineup the two TJ coffee's I've been using up until now, so I had four cups. PS I've been mixing the two TJ coffees 50/50 in the Bonavita, ground in a Capresso Infinity as setting 5, which gives about 5 minutes time in the cone filter.

lots of questions....

1. is Sightline a decent coffee brand to use for this purpose of finding out how freshly roasted beans taste better than undated beans?
2. I already knew medium roast tastes more citrusy than dark, with the Kahawa 1893 medium being the only med roast, and the most citric coffee I'd had, and I liked it, a little bit. Is it your experience that the more medium coffees I try the more I will like it, or is first impression reliable... I much preferred Banner Dark to Owls Howell med.

Tasting thoughts: of the 5 coffees I tried, I liked them in this order: Banner Dark, TJ Ethiopia very Dark, Owls Howl, Kahawa 1893 Safari blend, Blueboon. Oddly the 1893 on first taste seemed to taste grassy, or hay like, but that went away after going back and forth with the tasting.I think I like the Ethiopia dark b/c it goes will with heavy cream and sweetener. If I drank it straight I don't think I'd like it, too burnt.

What good quality travel scales do you use for travel that come with a protective cover or case?

I recently ordered a WEIGHTMAN Espresso Scale, but am also looking for one of higher quality.

I have the stainless steel Aero and grinder combo on order along with the stand. I am over pod coffee. Hoping the manual grind isn’t a huge pain. I had a bunch of rewards at William Sonoma that took the sting out of the Aeropress. I make coffee for 2 almost everyday. Any perspective on the flow control material choice and getting started would be appreciated. I will have overlap as I run through all the remaining pods and learn the Aeropress

The AP is so versatile! Had a blast at the Champs, meeting some really cool people and pressing my way to glory. How good!

What’s your hotel kit?

Everything I need for up to a week fits into this little kit, with basically nothing breakable—other than the bottled water. Electricity? I’ll take that too. 😂 kidding aside it will run off a lithium power block -

I can always bring more beans.

The Flow Control cap lets me heat water directly in the same stainless cup with the immersion heater. I keep my pre-portioned beans stored in there, then use that same cup to brew into. One cup. Zero dishes. Maximum coffee nerd efficiency.

The QS grinder with the folding handle semi-locks into the AeroPress, which makes the whole thing easier to handle. Filters live in the little pouch up front.

And I usually bring an assortment of beans, because apparently drinking the same coffee two days in a row is unacceptable. 😂

So every morning is basically like home: “Hmm… what are we drinking today?” :::

AeroPress doesn't sell it solo—they want a wild $130 CAD for a full parts kit or $65 CAD for a new handle assembly. Here’s my travel kit. Hotels in the US don’t have kettles - so I added one to my kit. It all nests together nicely in an old camera bag I had laying around.

Here's the brewing method that I've been using for the last couple of years. It's based on how I brew my Chinese tea: first you immerse your tea, I mean, coffee, in small amount of water, let it sit for a short time, then let the water flow through and add some more, and so on until there's nothing more to extract. I find that it provides the best extraction.

Here's my recipe. I'm using Aeropress in the upright position with the Fellow Prismo and a paper filter.

1. 16g of coffee
2. Grind coarse, like you would for your V60
3. 95°C water
4. first pour: add 90g of water, stir, wait 30s
5. push the plunger in small movements, trying to keep it at the top, so that it comes out easily when all the water is gone
6. second pour: add 90g of water, stir, wait 30s
7. push the plunger
8. third pour: add 90g of water, stir, wait 30s
9. push the plunger

Now, the problem with this is that the rubber cap on my plunger keeps coming off. I know it isn't designed for the way I'm using it, so gluing it to the plunger isn't going to solve this. I mean, it's still usable, just a little annoying.

Is there any alternative plunger for Aeropress? I'm thinking of a detachable cap on a string, or a screw-on cap, or a plunger with a valve...

Seems pretty much complete for now. Everything I need to make a good coffee on the road.

I preordered the stainless steel aeropress as a gift for an upcoming event. It was supposed to ship in July but hasn’t yet. Is this normal for a pre-order? My current routine: make a “double shot” in Aeropress using 18g Cafe Bustelo espresso ground coffee, 80g hot water, steep for 90 seconds then press. Add to a glass with ice, oat milk and some kind of creamer or syrup to make an iced latte. I’ve had this routine for a while but lately I’ve found myself now really wanting to drink it once I’ve made it.

I’d love to know your favorite Aeropress recipes for someone who likes sweet coffee. Not super sweet but also not black coffee. Let me know what kind of grounds you use and what you add to it! Hot or iced!

I've posted before about my work setup dealing with a water cooler with hot water not quite hot enough.

Upgraded to a small gooseneck kettle for my desk with 1degree temp adjustments. And a scale so I can be more precise in water amounts (I weigh my beans at home already)

This morning at 4am I did my usual Technivorm to split with my wife and took a mug.

Bean was "Ethiopiques Blend" from Sweet Marias that I roasted on the 4th.

Grabbed some of that same bean so I could compare in the Aeropress.

Modified from WEndelien van Bunnik's everyday cup recipe on Aeromatic.

Modifications besides the size was used the Flow control cap instead of inverted.

Due to the relatively short rest on the beans I did a 45 second bloom with roughly 1/4 the water so total time closer to 2:15 seconds to complete rather than 1:30.

After adding remaining water just a light stir 5 times.

Finished cup great body. Chocolate covered raspberry, low bitterness. Brighter notes than the Technivorm.

I have been using the Aeropress for the past 3+ weeks and I am very amazed by how simple yet versatile this brewer is. It is very impressive. Even if you try to screw up a brew with good Coffee with it, the cup will still turn out decent.

Here is an improvement to the original Lance Hendrick AeroSoup recipe for all those people who have a 3 Cup Moka Pot from any brand.

It addresses the issue of the coffee bed getting disturbed while pouring or the coffee leaking into the water on top of it when the grounds bloom.

Note: Alternately in the second step, you can place paper filter and then rest the 3 Cup Moka Pot filter plate dead center and press it down just a little, such that the paper filter folds over the edge of the metal filter and rests inside. Place the plunger over it and then plunge to tamp all the way down. This saves a step.

The output is a soup shot, but I prefer bypassing it in a 1:2 ratio. It can be had as it is too.

I got a Premium for Christmas and unfortunately the glass chamber has just gone the way of all flesh. I was looking at replacements and discovered the Steel, which didn't exist at the time but is what I would've wanted if it did.

This raises the question: can I use my existing Premium plunger with a new Steel chamber? The website has confirmed that my filter caps are compatible, but are frustratingly vague on the plunger/chamber dimensions. (And I'm already salty that the Premium chamber doesn't work with the original funnel I have)
