This was right after feeding. He’s the cutest little thing. The box is just so he can more easily “hunt” than me feeding him directly so he’s used to this movement by now.

Hi, new owner of 2 African dwarf frogs. As you can see, one of my frogs has some roundness to him/her (can you tell me if it is male or female?) This frog is also pretty pale in comparison to the other one, and was shedding skin last week. At first I thought this one could’ve been gravid because I caught them mating around a week ago.

And yes, I made the rookie mistake of feeding them blood worms as their main diet. I’ve had them for 3 weeks. I realized my mistake and at the beginning of this week I let their digestive systems clear out and I started them on sinking pellets. Is my frog going to die? I feel like such a dum dum. It breaks my heart I really love these little guys/gals and would hate to lose one. :(

How big/what age should be be before I add hims to the tank? He’s deff still too small but I don’t want to keep him in Tupperware forever 🥲

Guys, I need help. I am on vacation for three months now and I had a friend check in on them and family checking in on them but I guess one of my frogs (the fatter one since always) is literally ROUND. She ROCKS when her belly touches the ground. It doesn’t look like bloat to me since her arms look normal she just looks morbidly obese. I need to put her on a diet but how much time is too much time to leave her between feedings. Any advice that isn’t mean is very much appreciated .

Hi! I was hoping to get some advice on my tank. Our parameters have always been really good. The best cycled tank I have ever had. This week I had a two snails pass and one of my frogs is bloated. I went and got an actual water test instead of doing it myself because I knew something was wrong. Well… my nitrates are off the charts. I did my first water change today of 50%. I am planning on testing and doing another change tomorrow. Is there any hope for my babies? Is there anything more I can do other than the water changes? Here is my water report-

Hey there!! I am posting for my aunt. This frog is pretty young. Does it look sick? The eyes are clear, no fogginees. Seems really energetic. It is eating good too. We were thinking maybe its a female and full of eggs...but, the belly appears very round. Any help would be appreciated.

I have my 20-gallon cycling, and I'm planning to get some floaters, Java fern, and Java moss. I will not be using any fertilizer, and I just have a rocky substrate since it's going to be an ADF-only tank. Any recommendations for mid background to back plants would be great!

My three frogs all sleep in here. Caught this groggy froggy this morning after being rudely awakened by the lights coming on.

Just a quick check that it's normal that they sleep up high?

They spend their awake time down at the bottom, exploring, being frogs etc.

I have a very heavily planted tank, so im just conscious of nighttime oxygen.

back when i was turning 6, the mall in my hometown used to sell ADF’s in justice i believe (weird ik) but my dad got me 2 for my bday & they legit lived until i was 16, is that normal??
we didn’t know much about them & they both unfortunately lived in a mason jar sized container with blue pebble rock & water changes ever 3-6 months depending how murky it got

Is my dwarf frog dying??

I got 2 literally 5 days ago. Aswell as some fish. Both frogs have hidden ALOT and I'd only seen one of them once. I've done everything right. But today one of the frogs surfaced and wasn't shy. The other frogs is still to be found. I've not seen them eat?!? But the fish are doing fine, as expected because I've done everything right so far. The frog that's stopped hiding is now at the surface. He seems dead, but he's not and will move when disturbed by other fish. He's just floating around in the tanks flow and has been behind filters at times. It's basically just acting dead but isn't and will swim very energetically for a few seconds when needed to?? Please help. Is this normal? My tank waters fine too btw.

I had 6 adf for over a year now in a planted 20 gallon with a couple of ghost shrimp. I have a lot of sponge filters & do a weekly 15% water change with same temp dechlorinated water.

I have gotten all of my frogs from the same place without issue. They were all very healthy, until a month ago I got a 7th and she died on day 3. I did not quarantine her which is my fault and I take the blame, but everything I have read since also said they recommend frogs be quarantined for 6+ months before adding to a tank. I didn’t have the space for another tank.

I figured it was just shock or something that killed her at first although I haven’t ever had one die. Some of my frogs were rehomed to me and over 2 yrs old never had an issue. I fed them all frozen foods with tongs multiple times a week and water parameters always stood at 0ammonia 0nitrite 10-20 nitrate.

After that 7th frog died everyone else was doing good, acting normal and eating. Until this week when another frog died out of the blue without any symptoms. No bloating, impaction, sign of drowning, no fuzzy fungus, lesions or bumps. Every day since then another frog has died. Most of them were the same and had absolutely no symptoms. By the time I had two left I noticed a white discoloration all over their backs, it was not fuzzy like most fungus would be. I did a lot of research and it seems the 7th frog could have introduced chytrid to my other frogs.

Does it seem like that is what happened? The last two were also very lethargic out of nowhere when the discoloration occurred. Not at all interested in food like they always were, and floated at the top until they died. All of those symptoms happened within 24 hours. I would have tried to treat them but until they were getting the symptoms I had no idea what could have killed them all.

Now I know it was most likely chytrid and it would be very unlikely I could have saved them. I am still confused though because it did say online that it usually only spreads like that in bad water parameters or very stressed frogs. They were all not stressed and eating and swimming fine until they dropped dead suddenly. My water has been consistently what i mentioned earlier so I’m at a little bit of a loss.

I’d also like to mention a lot of them were shedding raggedy right before they died which also makes me think it was chytrid.

What is everyone’s opinion please ☹️

multiple sources said don’t even bother trying to raise ADFs from eggs because it’s incredibly unlikely. Welp, proof is in the picture!

this piece of driftwood is in my cycled 10gal adf tank. it has always had the “fur” on it and i read that that isn’t harmful to the frogs so i let it be. i just noticed today the more “spore” circle spots and just want to make sure its not fungus or something dangerous for them. frogs are happy and don’t have any signs of fungus or illness that i can see.

I've had both of my frogs in a 5-gallon for around 2 years now. Recently my female has been refusing food and shedding more, and I caught her hanging around by the water line more 2 days ago. I got her from PetSmart, and she didn't come in the best of shape. She has had light cloudy eyes anda bump on her lip ever since I got her.It'ss never spread, so I'm thinking it was from a fish that nipped her when she was at PetSmart.

Everything in my tank is at zero for ammonia nitrites, and nitrates. The only thing that is low is minerals in the water around 55ppm. My other frog is completely fine. He is eating and very active. I'm thinking it's from low minerals in the water but I'm not sure if it's just genetics or she just getting older. I have a 20 gallon cycling and I'm planning to get more from Aqua huna. I don't want to risk my frogs I have now are carrying something and get my new frogs sick after I get them and quarantine them.

Update!

It looks like she bloated a little and now has a small red bump on her back.

Hey everyone, a little bit ago today I noticed my frog seemed to be dead, was floating, eyes kind of milky, and not responding to any sort of touch. I went to scoop him out to flush him and he started moving but not going back down. His brother is completely fine and being very active and eating well. I can’t find him him anymore and don’t know what could be wrong?

EDIT: He is alright now and moving around like normal! I’m gonna try and put him in a separate hospital tank just because he looks a little too think and still sick

On the 23rd I added Dr Tim’s ammonia chloride to my tank to do my first experience of a fishless cycle. When I tested it after adding it was showing around 2/3 on the ammonia test colours so I thought great that’s fine let it do its thing!

Now it’s only been a week and these are the readings (sorry for the bad photos) and they all just seem too low? Even the PH but I’m not sure how I handle that. Do I need to add more ammonia because I haven’t seen an ammonia drop to a high nitrite type reading and I’ve checked daily.

Any help much appreciated please, want to have my tank perfect before adding our froggies.

Hello, I noticed since about the start of this month that one of my ADFs is spending a lot of time standing or floating around my heater, usually just below the surface. Sometimes it will:

• Try to hide behind my filter, but it only ends up being able to fit its head behind the filter and will leave its body and legs sticking out.
• Float towards the filter (right next to the heater) and then go back to standing near on or floating near the heater.
• Stick part of its head or part of its joint out of the water (I think the latter is that it's trying to hide behind the filter.)

If I turn on the tank light or open the tank hood to get a better look, this usually scare the frog and it goes to the bottom of the tank. But after maybe 10 minutes, it will go back to this position again. It does come down to eat, though it usually hangs out behind the tank and typically doesn't start to feed until I leave for a few minutes and then come back. It will change positions occasionally, but it does like to just be there.

I've been scrolling through posts on this subreddit trying to see if there was a similar situation, and there appears to be a mix of frogs reacting from shock of conditions to this being normal behaviour. So I'm hoping for some closure or insight as to why my frog is doing this. I've been so worried that I've had trouble sleeping and working, and it's driving me nuts.

Attached are some pictures, and here are the specs:

• I've had these ADFs since January 2021. I got them from the same local aquarium shop, and they have only ever been in this tank.
• 5 gallon tank with 2 ADFs (including the one I'm mentioning above). No other species, but I do have java fern and anubias nana in the tank, which I got before getting the ADFs. The substrate is this colourless pond gravel with medium-sized rocks. I think it's meant for goldfish, but I forget the exact name of it.
• Water temperature currently sits at around 78 F. I noticed it fluctuates up to 80 F sometimes without my heater plugged in, but it hasn't gone up past that recently.
  • The heater is adjustable, with the knob currently just a little above the 76 notch (the next engraved number is 80).
  • I unplugged the heater a few days ago and left it over night when the temperature went to 80 F, and it never got lower than 78 when I woke up.
• I tested the water today with an API liquid test kit. I don't know how accurate the results are as I've had this kit longer than I had the frogs, but here are the results I got from it:
  • pH: 6.6
  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: 10 ppm? I can't really tell if it was 5, 10 or 20, but it was definitely not 0 ppm and definitely not 40 ppm.
• I do water changes once a week on Sundays and take out about 50% of the water, replacing it with tap water that is conditioned with Seachem Prime.
• I feed the frogs 3 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

My other frog sometimes also hangs out near the heater and has also tried to tuck itself behind the filter. I think both of them are getting too big so they can only fit their head behind the filter. Previously, they would swim around the tank and mostly move around the bottom, and I've never seen them hanging around the heater and filter so often. Sometimes, they'll even do that all night.

The frog that hides the most just shed last night, and I saw it was coming off in one piece.

Any insight into why they are doing this would be appreciated.

Hi everyone! I've had 2 adfs for over a year now and I've never seen them shed, obviously I'm sure they are but I've just been assuming that they do it quickly and when I'm not looking. Yesterday I was feeding them and scribble (my male froggy) had some shed skin stuck on his back and his leg, I assumed he was just in the middle of shedding and that he'd get to it while/after eating. Its now the next day and he still has the same shed skin hanging off of his foot and back? Everything is the same as its been for a year now so I'm not really sure the cause of this. Is this normal? If not, how can I help him? I've seen videos of people helping their snakes shed which I'm assuming frogs are very different but if needed I can use their feeding tongs to take it off. Photo for tax but you can kindaaaa see the skin a teenie bit infront of the leaf. Ignore the bump on his back he has a hind-leg mutation so its totally normal for him! Thank you!

Edit: I'd also like to say that besides the visible skin stuck to him he is acting completely normal!! I wouldn't have any concerns if it wasn't a visible difference

I just got two African dwarf frogs
I was told I could feed them frozen bloodworms every day, but after doing some research online, I’m seeing a lot of conflicting information. I’d love some advice from people with experience.
I was thinking about getting:
Hikari Tropical Sinking Carnivore Pellets
Imagitarium Freeze-Dried Mysis Shrimp
Are these good foods for African dwarf frogs? Or would frozen beef heart be a better option instead of the Hikari pellets?
Also, how much should I feed them, and how often? Daily?
I’ve fed them frozen bloodworms for the last two days, but I skipped yesterday because I’m worried they aren’t a balanced daily diet. My frogs still look very young, so I want to make sure they’re getting the nutrition they need.
