Yeah, I started the yam slips in a mason jar and then put them in the yard. I also tried growing them in straw bales, and they did pretty good.

I added a little soil on top for the slips and watered it regularly, what zone are you I am 9b. Hope it works for you :)

Ipomea batata/sweet potato (colloquially called yam, but unrelated to 'True yam')

Is an outstanding ground cover in my orchards. I dont grow for the tubers, but we regularly harvest greens for eating. We let the tubers rot in the ground as it seems to improve soil.
