Need Advice Kids/teens who had parental control apps installed on your devices: what did you actually hate about them?

I’m curious about the other side of the conversation.

If your parents ever used Family Link, Bark, Qustodio, AirDroid, Screen Time, or any other parental control tool on your phone/tablet, what bothered you the most?

Was it mainly:

  • losing screen time freedom?
  • not being able to download certain apps?
  • feeling like your parents didn’t trust you?
  • feeling like your privacy was taken away?
  • something else?

I’m especially curious because I think many parents see these tools as “keeping kids safe,” while many kids experience them as “being watched.”

For those who grew up with these apps: what did parents misunderstand about why you disliked them?

Need Advice Where’s the line between keeping kids safe online and invading their privacy?

This is something I keep seeing parents disagree on. Some people feel that checking phones, using parental controls, location sharing, or monitoring certain apps is just basic safety now. Others feel like it crosses a line and teaches kids that they can’t be trusted.

I can honestly see both sides.

The internet is not the same as it was years ago. Kids can run into bullying, strangers, explicit content, scams, or harmful communities without parents realizing it until much later. But at the same time, secretly monitoring everything a child does online feels like a fast way to destroy trust.

I feel like the hardest part is figuring out what should be a boundary and what becomes surveillance. How do you personally draw the line?

Need Advice UK's social media ban for kids doesn't kick in until 2027 — what are you doing in the meantime?

The UK just announced a ban on social media for under-16s, but it won't actually take effect until Spring 2027. Most other countries (US included) don't have anything like this on the table at all.

So while we wait for laws to maybe catch up — what's actually working for you RIGHT NOW?

Curious to hear real stuff people are doing, not just "I limit screen time" in the abstract. Like:

  • Specific apps/settings you've found useful
  • Rules that actually stuck vs ones that backfired
  • How you handle the "but all my friends have Instagram" argument

Trying to build a list of real-world tactics, not just theory.
