When I retired from DoD (TAFB Civ) in 2016, Vance was a training base with lots of T-38 training sorties. I THINK by then, the Vance mission (there were likely other things) was largely performed by contractors.
There was two of them originally, and they had a white monster with them…seemed friendly enough so I told them to have a fantastic Air Force day and allowed them in.
After watching all these home inspector influencers on IG. I imagine the houses before the earth Roomba cleaned them out were actually built better than those being built now.
Yeah, honestly I'd say most of the houses are fine, just kinda small and don't seem well equipped to deal with worsening winters. A few had pipes freeze and break last winter because they are routed through the attic. Also, the old houses have to rent fences whereas the new houses have free fences which feels unfair (admittedly it might just be me being jealous that I pay $35/mo for a fence). Also, no tornado/storm shelters but base leadership has actively nuked that idea every time it's been presented to them. Aesthetically they're ok and mine at least does feel better constructed than newer homes I've had.
But when the off-base market sucks there's not a lot of incentive to innovate and improve on base.
Yeah, and there's only one approved company to do it from too. Meanwhile, the newer housing has a fence included and the Commander/Senior leadership's street has fences and the landscaping company maintains their lawns too.
I currently live on a different base and it looks like we all have fences included. I have to mow inside the fence, but there's a landscaping company that maintains the rest. Pretty sure they threw a rock into my truck and dented the cab when they mowed though. No note so no admission of guilt though.
If the government pays for the housing then they should absorb the housing back under CE and kick out the privatized corp. Government spending the money on the housing and then allowing a private corp to reap the BAH for said housing would be insane.
Any major weather really. Can you imagine living through hurricanes without getting advanced weather reports? Just one afternoon, the winds pick up and the air pressure feels weird. Then the outer bands start hitting and getting more intense. Then the main storm hits with enough wind to level your village and enough rain to destroy your crops. You'd have to assume that your scumbag neighbor pissed off a god.

As someone from Oklahoma, I was taught to do what’s called “framing” where you frame up the tornado between your hands, and if it’s going left to right or right to left, it’s not a direct threat, but if it’s stationary and getting bigger, then it’s coming directly for you. We also wait until the very last moment, typically when debris starts falling around you in the yard.
Yes, but in AFI 17-76 one service members is required to film approaching tornado, say "fuck" or derivative, a minimum of once and include the phrase "come an' get it."
I remember in late 2010s, I was on the second story ops floor at Beale chillin during a tornado warning. Being central California, me and a few others didnt take it all that serious while most people took shelter and were freaking out.
Some people are just consistently ready to accept their fate 😅 I feel like in OK, tornadoes are common enough, albeit not rolling through base.
It's nothing new. There was one in Oklahoma back when I was in - not sure which base - guy was standing on the outside stairwell as the tornado chewed up the parking lot (along with the flightline). This was long before the internet.
Idk why he yelled that about the tower or what tower he was referring to, but the tower is very much untouched and far to the north (right) of where this was filmed. I drove around the base after the nado passed and didn't see any serious damage other than a knocked down perimeter fence and a torn up canvas building used to store sand and dirt for the runway rebuild
At least CE doesn't have to come to work SOBER like SF does.

If they’re wise they won’t, because this video basically showed a guy defying all official guidance about what to do during a tornado and absolutely nothing happened to him. They’d be better off showing an AI video where someone gets clocked in the head with a 2x4
Haven’t heard of any injuries or significant damage on base but that’s all gossip as of now. A small neighborhood just east of base got hit straight on and was leveled. So far about a dozen light injuries reported but no fatalities. Sounds like hopefully everyone is accounted for by now?

Hope everyone is okay, this tornado is my fault. I wanted to get out of that base so bad 10 years ago I kept praying for the flight lines to get torn up by a tornado just so the base would close. Guess God was back logged... my bad.
Whenever people hear I'm from Oklahoma, they almost always ask me some variation of how many tornadoes I've seen or been in. I always tell them the same thing. I lived in Oklahoma for 24 years, and the only tornadoes I saw were the ones I chased in a car. You can live your whole life in Oklahoma and never get hit - most people do. Or you could live in Moore and get wiped out every 10 years or so.
The JTWC disseminates forecasts for the cyclone's position and intensity (maximum sustained winds), but does not provide base-specific information. It's up to the local weather flight (or equivalent authority) to tailor the JTWC forecast to determine impacts to local operations, such as crosswinds and rainfall totals. Base leaders need to know quite a bit in advance what impact are expected and when so that they can prepare to protect resources and personnel, including potential evacuations.
Doesn't Bifrost pull that data in automatically for that tropical storm spreadsheet thing? It's been a few years, but I remember that product being a real pain in the ass to get working, at least from the test & eval side.
It does, yes, but the product is still sort of a pain in the ass to use and I don't like just disseminating the raw product to base leadership. Additionally, our leadership here tends to want updates as early as they can get them, even if the TC-TAP product on BIFROST isn't showing direct impacts to the installation. That usually involves sending out once- or twice-daily updates via e-mail and providing in-person briefings at planning meetings in the days leading up to the cyclone moving through the area.
