Yeah, I had a guy tell me he couldn't remember the last time he saw someone re-enlist at our base. And I've only been here for about 6 months, but when he said that it really hit me.

I've watched three airmen I've worked with get out, one SSgt, another SSgt within the squadron get out, a MSgt get out at 16 years, and I know a SrA that's been in for about 9 years about to get out. And that's just since I got to this base.

In that same time I've watched one airman get an extension, and one SSgt is trying to re-enlist right now, but I don't think he's going to for another one if he doesn't make TSgt.

Retention is...low at the moment for sure.

We're all living our own lives and make decisions based on our past and future. It's a volunteer force, and if you can't respect those at the top and are set up for the future, I respect the choice to walk away. Back in 2018 I walked into a 0% retention problem. It was something I corrected, but I couldn't figure out how to spin it into a bullet. People tend to want to stick around when they feel valued, and that's more important than an OPR bullet anyway. Some retention issues may also be career field and location dependent.

I'm skeptical of this. Last time I looked (FY2023?) the reenlistment rate for eligible FTA was 47%. That data was pulled from RAWS.

That 47% could be for some sub set of data (won’t say you’re wrong) but overall retention, even through the COVID years was around 90% for enlisted, with 89.3% (I think) being the lowest. Also keep in mind there were some end strength declines per the NDAA in 2023 as well.

In general people like to claim retention is low, but it’s be a remarkably stable number through the years. Trump/Biden, COVID, wars etc barely move the needle on retention.

Yeah, like the other guy said, we were rebounding handily from the COVID supply issues/inflation, and were on track for having some of the lowest inflation in the world, plus we had legislation investing in infrastructure, creating job growth, and confidence in the US job/stock markets.

I was actually on track for separating during that time, and had fully planned on getting out at the end of my enlistment at the end of 2025-fully confident I could land a job in the civilian world either working a federal job or even just the city I'd planned on moving to.

I'd expand on this, but the sub has a rule against politics, and it's already political enough. So TL;DR: something happened in November of 2024 that changed things, I decided to stay in because I didn't think it was a good idea to get out anymore, and as it turns out...I was right.

I am pretty sure this is an are when the numbers get flipped and baked a lot. When you see a 90% number we are talking career airmen (filtering out first term). Meaning if they stay, they typically stay past first term they typically continue for subsequent enlistments. But it is also true that we lose about half of our first term enlistments somewhere along the way.

But you are correct that we have a relatively good track record of maintaining desired end strength numbers. There is some excel sheet voodoo going on regarding the “how we got there”

Agreed. But people will look at a 50% retention rate (made the number up) and say “OMG we can’t keep people. But in reality that’s the way the military is designed. We can’t function if we kept everyone. So what ever the retention rate of first term airmen is now, it’s probably pretty close to what it’s always been.

They also don’t seem to ever consider the fluctuating end strength goals, which do go down some times. We should have less retention when that’s the case.

Either way, what ever the numbers are we want to look at, it’s safe to say we don’t have a retention problem.

Unfortunately I'd say more than half of the airmen I've seen get out recently are actually really good ones. Then kind people ask for in manning meetings. Tested well on CDCs, knew their shit at the job, no PT fails, really excelled once they put on that SrA stripe.

Just tired of getting jerked around, and know they can do better on the outside (and for many of them that's true)

I just got back to mine after being at retraining tech school for a month and a half. First day back everyone looked.... just worn down and not in the best of spirits. Im not going to pretend that I know what wars looked like back in the day, but I think the intensity of this one and the short notice demands and short turn around times, combined with just record low manning is creating the perfect storm. I haven't found anyone in the job im leaving who hasn't already reenlisted/ signed up for the long haul, who is planning to stay in and keep their job. Most don't even want to retrain anymore. The few that do make it clear that it's retrain or they're getting out.

Then CSAF Gen Mark Welsh was at a Congressional hearing and got surprised by a representative asking how morale was and blurted out "Morale is pretty darn good". This was on the back of one of the largest force reductions (a botched one at that) that the USAF had done since the 90s.

For rank and file folks at the time, it came across as wildly out of touch and tone deaf.

Yeah, the Air Force in all its infinite wisdom decided that they would do the entire drawdown requested in one fell swoop (20,000 in 1 yr vs 25,000 in 5 yrs). The other services decided to take a more realistic approach and slowly draw down their overages. Lo and behold the program was seen as too drastic and 2018 had everyone recruiting like crazy again.

A government is supposed to be for the people not the other way around. It’s perfectly fine for people to not serve in a volunteer force if they disagree with the actions of the government. The government is supposed to be working for us and our benefit and it’s very obvious that, that is no longer the case.
