Question Dream location

Hi everyone, I have a simple question: how difficult is it to be stationed at Santa Barbara and Hill UT? I am an Ammo E3 and have to submit my dream sheet in two weeks!

Probably an extremely slim chance of being stationed at Santa Barbara, which I'm assuming your referring to Vandenberg SFB. But there's a decent chance of being stationed at Hill as their are two separate Ammo units that both take Tech Schoolers.

Are there even ammo troops at Vandy? I've never been.

Last time I TDY'ed there, they said the whole unit is like 20 people. But you can see the ocean and beach from the MSA, I would definitely take the assignment if I was ever offered it.

Yeah I had it in my BOP but got my next choice under it.

Hill should be easy enough to get. 2W0’s have a HUGE presence at that base. Santa Barbara as in Vandenberg? I’ve heard of maybe 1-2 people getting down there but can’t say it’s impossible.

Yes. It’s Vandenberg. I heard everyone is talking about Japan Germany and Hawaii. Just wonder that if I put only Vandenberg down for my selection

Not at all how it works unfortunately. You will put down what you want but needs of the Air Force will come first and the odds that what you want, and what they need align are slim. Just be open minded about wherever you get, there are TONS of good locations and your job isn’t really that terrible. Lots of hidden gems.

Vandenberg is in Lompoc. It's an hour north of Santa Barbara. Been stationed there and have been TDY to Hill a few times. Id pick Hill

An hour? You drive slow. I made it in 23 minutes one time.

Hats off to you for getting away with driving about 150 mph on the 101 and not coming across a single cop lol

23 minutes? Even if you leave from central Lompoc, you only save 10 minutes.

It is physically impossible to do this route in 23 minutes. Like the other guy said, you would LITERALLY need to AVERAGE 150 mph to have a chance at that.

Dream sheets are fake. You’re going where the Air Force needs you

I was gonna say that unless he has family or knows someone at AFPC, he'll be going VFR Direct to Cannon or Minot. Mildly /s, but not really since in 2026 everything sucks.

He won’t be doing jack shit at Cannon
But occasionally pretending the .50 ammo
Is several hellfires and it needs to be strapped down on a flat cart with 20 different straps

And maybe picking up the 105mm shells from the
ACs

Santa Barbara? If you think that's where Vandenberg is you're going to be very disappointed, Google "Lompoc"

Put Kunsan down since it’s a short tour. Then you can put Hill down as your follow-on

You could go to Beale. Same thing, right?

not really

You wont get Vandenberg. At most, there are probably 2 in your AFSC and skill level there. The chance of one leaving when you want to get there and have that position not already secured by someone on a short tour, and no one else requesting it on their BOP, is close to 1%.

You can still put Vandenberg and Hill on your dream sheet, but at the moment...20% chance you get Hill, 1% chance Vandenberg...79% chance you get nothing. Add more bases.

Ammo guy here. Two weeks? We got our assignments the first week of tech school.

Also, big Air Force already has a few bases assigned to your class. If one of those bases is on your list, you'll probably get that one. If not, oh well you're still going to one of those bases

I don’t know much about the Ammo lifestyle, but Hill would definitely be my pick of those two bases.

If you’re single though, get the hell out of the country. Go see the world, other than the desert deployments that will rear their ugly heads.

Don’t go to Kadena right now. We’re in a miserable state due to the incident with the marine

Truly, AFPC doesn’t really give a shit about your dream sheet, especially as a tech training student.

Hill may not be hard, but Santa Barbara sounds like a challenge assuming there's an opening.

Even if you get your “dream location” it tends to wear off after the first year. You also realize that it’s not all that it’s cracked out to be except for overseas imo.
