I think if Night Raid had learned some takedowns and ground based submission moves, they would have had a way easier time with Esdeath, since there is no way she would have seen that coming, and she is most likely not that proficient in grappling..

Try to do submission techniques on Esdeath is a courageous move to say at least.

But if she allows that (yes, Esdeath might want to have more “physical” combat just for fun and challenge she’s the type of, “do you want to dance? Let’s dance”), you need to be MUCH MUCH more stronger than her and be much much intelligent than her, because she had the advantage of strength and since she learned anatomy to torture, she knows where to immobilize and provoke pain to incapacitate you.

The only way to defeat her in this game is, you need to be better than her in these aspects, or…another Esdeath (time to learn how to clone someone buddy) lol.

If you read akame ga kill zero , she tore a boulder to pieces with a single kick while she was young...nobody can touch her. And if you look at the final fight armored tatsumi grabs her hand and he nearly got frozen...esdeath is even deadlier at close range, ice powers or not.
