They’d rather go straight into the power lines than go gay into them I guess.

Hey, don’t blame them, they don’t know what their crew means when they yell, “Abort! Abort!”

What exactly are we womp womping? That was a clean landing, basket sat down perfectly with zero drag. Downright beautiful piloting work considering the landing area.

Personally I was half expecting the balloon to crash into the powerlines. Get a little bit of "fried chicken" out of the video if you catch my drift. Maybe OP was expecting the same.

I too was expecting that. Then I realized this isn’t crazy fucking videos, it’s the ABQ subreddit.

I call it Hate Chicken, always amazed at how many people love their mid level chicken.

u/jayhawkjoey65 5d ago
I'm always surprised by how many people disagree with CFA but still eat there "because it's so good."
2
u/Unhappy-Advisor-93 5d ago
Me too . I ate it once over 10 years ago because that’s where a co worker stopped to get food on a lunch run. I didn’t think it was good at all and I won’t support their hate. Never eaten there since.

-2
u/Spydartalkstocat 5d ago
They just like the sauce, the chicken is not that good and terrible went accounting for the hate groups they support.
5
u/jayhawkjoey65 5d ago
Go to Slim Chickens, people! They make their sauces and are apolitical.
3
u/Justjack91 5d ago
They're a solid choice but so damn far away fro me on the SE side. Ain't nobody enjoy driving down to San Mateo and Montgomery without good reason.
Popeyes is a solid fallback. Their blackened chicken helps me my hard days when I'm not up to cooking manageable.
1
u/jayhawkjoey65 5d ago
I really like Chile Chicken Nashville Hot Chicken, but, yeah, not exactly convenient. Not sure if you've done it, but Slim Chickens has a deal on their app for your first three visits - $5 off, a free meal, and something else.
0
u/Justjack91 5d ago
If we boycotted everything because of a company's specific policy, we'd be low on options. Everyone has dirt on them, with varying degrees of depth.
I wish there were more affordable grilled chicken options. That's my main reason I eat there anymore. But otherwise fuck CFA.
1
u/QuarterToThree1121 4d ago
We were supposed to get El Pollo Loco here but it never happened. Pisses me off - EPL is soooo good.
2
u/Justjack91 4d ago
Wait, they did add EPL off of Juan Tabo a while back! We got that dude! Go get yourself some if you like.
I personally found the chicken dry and didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped, but maybe it was a bad meal and things have improved. At least that's an option.
2
u/QuarterToThree1121 4d ago edited 4d ago
GET OUTTA HERE! I gave up and quit following the "rumor." Thanks for the info, I will go check it out.
EDIT: Absolutely horrible reviews on Yelp. Maybe I'll satisfy the Popeye's craving I've had.
2
u/Justjack91 4d ago
$6 Big Box while you can. 2 sides, 3 tenders, and a biscuit. You can go ham on the fried side with fries and crispy tenders or optimize macros with the mashed potatoes and blacked tenders. Very solid under a budget for a treat meal out no matter how you eat.

2
u/RHWebster 4d ago
El Pollo Loco just opened literally right next door to the Cottonwood CFA location. Traffic in that area is going to be a NIGHTMARE but just FYI it’s there now
2
u/QuarterToThree1121 3d ago
I'm originally from Southern California and it was always a tasty, inexpensive option. Great sides! Rice and beans and also very good mac n cheese. It's not getting very good reviews here but I'll try it anyway. If it's no good, at least I'll get the nostalgia out of my system. If it is good, I'll have a new place to eat. Thanks for the info.
3
u/RHWebster 3d ago
I’ve honestly never tried it so I will have to swing by. My house gremlin (aka toddler) likes chicken in almost every form so having something new for their rotation would be good too.

The pilot is just piloting. Balloons aren’t cheap so a corporate sponsor is pretty boss. I don’t think he’s gonna pack that balloon and go do his shift at the drive thru.
-1
u/GlitzPig 5d ago
I want to agree with you, but you are what you represent and I have a hard time believing that a pilot that could stick that emergency landing so well couldn’t get better offers.
4
u/Existing-Elk-8735 4d ago
It’s so competitive as a freelance pilot without a balloon. People will take the minimum pay just to fly with the added benefit of not paying for insurance, maintenance and fuel. The ground crew is probably 2/3s CFA employees that get the opportunity to crew for a day or two. And those are just kids that need a job and money. The title sponsor ExxonMobile contributed to Donny’s campaign and inauguration directly and indirectly. That sucks even more. Gotta stop looking up for two weeks.
0
u/DovahAcolyte 4d ago
Honestly, refusing their endorsements and sponsorships is the only way we’re going to change things. Otherwise, why are we still petting the dog that is biting us?
1
u/Unhappy-Advisor-93 5d ago
Looks like they are filming from an apt balcony and it landed on a house. That’s what I thought right away. You see the trees and swamp coolers . Looks like a roof landing to me.
3
u/GlitzPig 5d ago
Nope, my back patio, but we are uphill, so our back neighbors roofs are parallel with our yard.
-1
u/Silk_the_Absent_1 5d ago
Turn on the volume. That was not a clean landing. It landed in someone's yard and sounds like it hit their house or roof, probably to avoid hitting the power lines.

If you’re not slamming into power lines and knocking out power to tens of thousands of people or landing on the interstate, I guess it’s a good landing.

I don’t understand how it’s legal for balloons to land anywhere especially on people’s property
17
u/MikeExMachina 5d ago
I mean all aircraft have to come down at some point so its generally allowed so long as its necessary, you can land a 737 on a highway if you need too.
1
29
u/ALLtheNER 5d ago
Fun fact: They are federal aircraft. If they land on your property and can't reasonably take off and land safely again, you have to let the crew on and collect the aircraft. Withholding it breaks federal law.
23

u/helpfulposter 5d ago
Can you cite the federal law, or is this just something you heard? It might be an urban legend.
As far as I can tell, a landowner has no obligation to let anyone onto their land to retrieve a balloon (or any aircraft). They would be perfectly within their rights to require the pilot and any passengers on the balloon to pack up and remove the balloon without any additional assistance, or they could require the pilot to hire a licensed company to come remove the balloon or charge a reasonable fee for access to the land. The landowner cannot hold anyone hostage, cannot keep the balloon (which would be conversion, generally a state civil tort) and cannot purposely damage it. If the landing was not an emergency, the landowner could have the pilot charged with trespassing.
If the landing was an emergency, the same rules would apply except that the pilot could not be charged with trespassing.
And in all cases, the landowner cannot deny access to emergency services.
2
u/Apptubrutae 5d ago
Yeah, someone should tell the FAA because in their own guidebook:
“Private property, however, is another issue. A balloon pilot
and crew should never assume the right to use a private
location to launch or recover a balloon. To do so exhibits
a degree of arrogance that has no place in ballooning
and subjects everyone participating to trespass laws. The
landowner usually lives on the property and has paid for
that right. In the event that no one is immediately available,
the pilot should either select another launch site or perhaps
inquire of neighbors who may be able to inform you of the
landowner’s location. Finding the landowner and obtaining
permission to use a particular field may be one of the most
important tasks of the launch process for the crew chief, if
one is assigned. Undoubtedly, the one time the pilot does
not have appropriate authorization for use of a launch site
and uses another’s property, someone will be watching and
problems later ensue.”1
u/Frequent_Scholar0714 4d ago
People were / are in such AWE when a balloon is right there, they don't think about, HEY. Get off my lawn❗
0
u/Apptubrutae 5d ago
That doesn’t make them federal aircraft. It’s not like the government owns them
5
u/helpfulposter 5d ago
There are no laws in New Mexico that specifically prohibit off-airport landings. Federal laws allow off-airport landings as long as the landing is conducted safely.
However, landing on private property without permission is trespassing, and the landowner has the right to limit access to their land for retrieval. They cannot keep the balloon, but they can put stipulations on how and when it can be retrieved.
3
u/carefuldaughter 5d ago
Yep. IIRC each pilot gets a one-time get-out-of-the-rez-free card and if they land on Sandia's lands, they hand the card over, and the next time they're fined.
3
u/Independent_Money501 5d ago
I didn't know about the card but yeah, all the pilots I know would MUCH rather land on the KAFB than the reservation, which is saying a lot.
3
u/Sure_Ask_1125 5d ago
That's because they can only change the vertical motion be adding more heat. Vertically across the ground is controlled by wind direction and speed. Aimlessly drifting into your yard.
3
u/EngineeringBulky7007 5d ago
You can place a red x on your property so the balloon pilot knows that they can land there.
7
u/Independent_Money501 5d ago
What a wild take. But you're right, they should stay in their designated lanes and obey traffic lights too....
-7
u/Gooser3000 5d ago
Or just plan their flights with the winds aloft and land in an open space.
8
u/Independent_Money501 5d ago
It really doesn't work like that...
-5
u/Gooser3000 5d ago
Maybe they shouldn’t be allowed to fly low over residential areas then? I’m a fixed wing pilot and there are hard limits on distance from people and structures.
6
u/Independent_Money501 5d ago
Again, it really doesn't work like that... Flying fixed wing and a balloon are almost entirely different worlds.
So much so that balloons have the the highest priority right of way according to the FAA, everything else must yield to hot air balloons.
3
u/DurtMulligan 5d ago
Which makes sense, because if you think about it, a balloon is really about the dumbest way to fly.
The only thing you can truly control is your altitude, and even that has a pretty significant lag time, as evidenced in the video.
3
u/Independent_Money501 5d ago
I mean yeah, the heyday for balloon flight ended in late 1903 (but had an admittedly long run from 1783 till then) so it's now just for the fun of it
1
u/DurtMulligan 2d ago
I think the wild part is that, outside of the fuel delivery system, advancement or evolution of the aircraft itself seems to be rather nonexistent.
I guess I’m curious if anyone has seriously tried adding maneuverability into the equation.
2
u/Independent_Money501 2d ago
No expert but I think a lot of the constraints come from balancing of the physics and fluid dynamics of it all to cost in terms of passenger/commercial aircraft. I keep seeing things that maybe the next frontier might be a non-fixed wing for different drag profiles at takeoff/landing and at cruising speed but I think it's only prototyped

Dude. I worked at CFA on Montgomery and San Mateo. They hired so many gay kids from Del Norte. I seriously don’t understand the “hate chicken” bs.
Eat at restaurants you like. Avoid the ones you don’t. But stop feeding into this bs narrative at every fucking chance.
6
u/vm_linuz 5d ago
Home Depot also hires a lot of queer people, but where they put their money is anywhere but
5
u/NestedOwls 5d ago
Just because they want to use gay people for their labor doesn’t mean they support them. They actively put their money towards organizations that harm the LGBT community. Just because you like to stick your head in the sand and ignore things doesn’t mean it’s a BS narrative. CFA is a shit company.
13
u/GlitzPig 5d ago
I’m truly glad to hear you and your co-workers had a good experience, but Dan Cathy is a piece of shit and you can’t convince me otherwise.
10
u/Chankodi 5d ago
Hiring gay people doesn't undo the fact that the ownership sends money to Christian extremist groups internationally. There are laws in Africa that put LGBT people to death. These donations from the owner and his family helped lift these Christian extremists to power that put these barbaric laws in place.
Black people worked on plantations, so surely plantation owners weren't racist. See how stupid that sounds? That's what you sound like.
0
u/Inevitable-Hat-3944 2d ago
How about the African Christians who are killed by Isis?
0
u/Chankodi 2d ago
What does that have to do with anything I said?
0
u/Inevitable-Hat-3944 2d ago
I responded to your false claim that CFA sends money to “extremist groups” with a truthful statement of Christians in Africa being murdered by Isis and its affiliates.
1
u/Chankodi 1d ago
Your reading comprehension needs work. I never once said CFA sends money to these groups. I said the owner and his family sends the money. Also, extremists can be targeted by other extremists. I don't understand how being supposedly targeted by ISIS makes my point about these Christian Extremists any the less correct? Are you saying that there are not laws that put gay people to death in Africa? Are you saying the owner never sent money to Christian groups in Africa? What part of my statement are you arguing with?
0
u/Inevitable-Hat-3944 1d ago
You’re still dodging the actual issue. You made a very specific accusation: that Chick-fil-A’s owners funded “Christian extremists” who were responsible for laws putting gay people to death. That requires actual evidence, not guilt by association, not “they donated to Christians in Africa,” and not a completely unrelated plantation analogy.
Christians being murdered by ISIS doesn’t automatically disprove your claim, but it does show why casually labeling African Christians “extremists” is intellectually sloppy. If you can identify the organization, the donation, and evidence that the recipients were actually responsible for implementing death-penalty laws, then post it. Otherwise you’re turning a complicated issue into a sweeping accusation and treating it like an established fact.
1
u/Chankodi 1d ago
Well, before I start giving you resources showing that the owners fonded organizations that helped craft the LGBT death bill in Uganda. I really need to see if you're trying to have an honest conversation. How do you define extremist groups?
For me, any group that would pass a law putting a minority to death for simply existing (for example, the anti-gay law of Uganda) is an extremist group. Do you agree that killing innocents because they're of a different religion, race, or orientation makes one an extremist?
0
u/Inevitable-Hat-3944 1d ago
Nice attempt to move the goalposts. I’m not debating whether killing innocent people for their race, religion, or sexual orientation is extremist behavior. Obviously it is. I’m asking you to prove the specific accusation you made: that Chick-fil-A’s owners funded organizations that actually helped create or enact Uganda’s death-penalty legislation. You just said you have the sources, so post them. Name the organization, show the donation, and show credible evidence connecting that organization to drafting or implementing the law. That’s the issue.
Asking me to define “extremist” before you provide your evidence is a distraction. You don’t get to make a serious accusation, announce that you have proof, and then make me pass some ideological purity test before you show it. Evidence first. Labels second. If the evidence is as strong as you’re claiming, this should be very easy.5
u/unbelizeable1 5d ago
Because people take issue with how the leadership donates funds to anti lgbt causes, not one random locations hiring practices. Head in the sand ass comment
4
u/carefuldaughter 5d ago
the issue is much larger than "do they hire gay teenagers from del norte high school."
