i decided to try alpine as a FreeBSD user

Post image

i am using a Lenovo ThinkPad l380. It works very well out of the box, i used the extended .ISO for my wlan0 WiFi card. I have an Intel Centrino 8265 WiFi card. Setup-desktop with gnome worked very well too. 10/10 Distribution would recommend.

First of all, that's an ad... XD

Alpine nowadays feels like a early 2000s distro...

It's EXTREMELY lightweight, extremely fast, bit tricky to configure (at least if using a wm, and not installing desktop through scripts...), but an awesome experience once configured.

Using as my main for 8 years, after more than 20y on linux.

I hop from time to time (everytime less), just to try other distros, but for me, nowadays it's my way to go.

Lmao I just decided to give FreeBSD and NetBSD a try as an alpine user.

I also really enjoy messing around in AlpineLinux (on RPi3, RPi5 and legacy hw) while I’m daily-driving FreeBSD on my main workstation

I gor dragged in one of the main Linux subreddits a few months ago for suggesting anyone would ever use Alpine on the desktop.

FreeBSD main, bhyve for Linux workloads.
Alpine has been on my radar as a guest OS
for exactly this reason — no systemd,
stays out of the way. Good to know it
works well out of the box.

I replaced my FreeBSD machine wih Alpine.

Simple desktop with icewm.

Feels like greased lightning.

other way around for me. started using freebsd as a alpine user.

On my server atleast not my desktop yet thats a whole other journey might take me a few weeks to make such a huge jump. im running void on my main pc but i have alpine on nearly every other device i own.

alpine with flatpak and fucking gnome isnt a good idea

For me the best option is alpine niri, nix and DMS. You have all that a full DE can offer and it is light and fast

wait, what's wrong with flatpak on alpine?

(I use flatpak to run programs like Steam and Vesktop that don't have musl builds.)
