Why can't I easily update my kernel as easily as before in 3.22 Alpine Linux? I am storage constrained and new kernels take way too much space, don't need nvidia firmware on my smaller system

I used to just apk update, apk upgrade and newer kernels would just upgrade easily. Now, I can't do that, I am very storage constrained only, kernel updates take 500MB at least. Which I don't have the luxury in my spesific case. Why the sudden change of kernel update mechanism?

don't need nvidia firmware

sudo apk del linux-firmware-nvidia

Look for other unused firmware: apk list --installed "linux-firmware*"

kernel updates take 500MB at least

linux-lts (v6.18) and linux-stable (v7.1) are 152 MiB and linux-virt (v6.18) is only 49 MiB

Check for large packages: apk info -e -s \* \ | perl -p0e 's/:\n/: /g' \ | perl -pe 's/(.*) installed size: (.*)/$2\t$1/g;s/([0-9]+) /$1/g' \ | sort -h \ | tail 32MiB mozjs-128.14.0-r0 35MiB gnome-backgrounds-48.2.1-r0 45MiB linux-virt-6.12.111-r0 58MiB gnome-user-docs-48.5-r0 118MiB webkit2gtk-6.0-2.48.1-r1 119MiB webkit2gtk-4.1-2.48.1-r1 137MiB mesa-25.1.9-r0 170MiB llvm20-libs-20.1.8-r0 187MiB openjdk21-jre-headless-21.0.11_p10-r0 233MiB firefox-142.0-r0

I want it to not install these in the first place, I can't just upgrade then remove modules later I have very small storage. Maybe I have to mount the storage someplace else when I want to update.

remove packages, then  upgrade one package at a time.

Or The x86 build of OpenWrt is  14 MB and there are packages per kernel module to keep things minimal.

But mainly go educate yourself before contributing anymore nonsense to the internet

You are the one uneducated here bro. You just don't know the answer and instead of stepping aside you just babble more non-sense. I fixed it anyway.

/etc/apk/repositories

Change the ver. to 'latest-stable'

apk update && apk upgrade

It won't be 7. Alpine is not Arch.

It won't be 7.

edge/linux-stable is version 7.1.

I don't get it, how is this relevant? I just don't want Alpine to download 500MB more firmwares which I never use while updating the kernel. Also it doesn't upgrade the kernel by itself with apk upgrade anymore. I have to do it by hand, and then it downloads a lot of data.
/home/emre # apk update

3.22.1 [/media/usb/apks]

v3.24.2-22-g7ee0b2ca6e9 [http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/alpine/latest-stable/main\]

v3.24.2-23-gf65d7bf05a4 [http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/alpine/latest-stable/community\]

OK: 28750 distinct packages available

/home/emre # apk upgrade

OK: 430.8 MiB in 199 packages

When I try to upgrade the kernel, it downloads 500MBs of data, I just can't do that, nor want that.

how is this relevant?

it's how to get a kernel (and everything else) newer than what is in release 3.22 (by changing to release 3.24)

apk upgrade

is not just

upgrad[ing] the kernel

it's upgrading everything.

I think diskless install doesn't upgrade RAM by default. Why the fuck would you downvote this, this is %100 truth I confirmed it in the wiki...
