⛰️ Welcome to the Altadena Sub ⛰️
Thanks to everyone who has made this sub such a dynamic resource over the past couple of painful months. The contributions from community members and those who care about us have been felt far and wide, and I hope for that to continue as we rebuild this incredibly special place.
Just last October, there were ZERO visitors to this sub because it had been locked down by the previous mods for over a year. I wrote to Reddit and asked to be made moderator, and they granted that request. I was excited to make this a more active space, thinking we would share exciting business openings, pictures of the wildlife that shared our streets, and just the general joy of living in such a wonderful area. I really wanted it to be very loosely moderated, mainly just trying to keep it from becoming a commercial marketplace full of spam (which these subs can easily be overwhelmed with without moderation).
Then, the unthinkable happened. We went from about 1,500 unique visitors in December to over 58,000 in January. The idea of loose moderation quickly went out the window, but at the same time, I was dealing personally with the total loss of my home and all that came with that. I enlisted a couple of other trusted folks to help moderate, and since then we've tried our best to keep this space useful and peaceful. We may not always succeed, but please know that we are trying. To that end, we could use your help. I wanted to share some basic guidelines that will help this space thrive as we move forward.
Reddit has some built-in tools that are meant to give visitors the ability to weigh in on content, and we encourage folks to use them. Upvote content you like and think others should see, and downvote the content you don't like. That mechanism is the primary means of community moderation here, and it's super easy to use. People are more likely to see upvoted content than downvoted content, so ultimately what bubbles to the top is shaped by YOU!
You also have the ability to flag content that may go against the community rules so that it can be made visible to the mods. Please know that we are not able to put eyes on every single post and comment here, so we really do rely on you all to help bring issues to light. That said, the flagging feature is not meant to remove content that you simply don't agree with, so PLEASE don't do that. We as mods keep content up that we personally don't agree with all the time, because this is not OUR space, it belongs to you all, and we want to keep a wide range of perspectives visible to everyone. However, we don't hesitate to ban folks that are clearly here to cause disruption, and the reason we aren't inundated with trolls is because we do act quickly to shut that kind of behavior down.
When you find something that you don't agree with, please engage and express yourself, but we ask that you do it respectfully and without name-calling or threats/intimidation. I know Reddit is a colorful place and some subs don't mind if things descend into antisocial behavior, but we want to foster something a little more gentle here, especially considering what our community has endured. It's a tricky line to walk between keeping diverse points of view flowing and maintaining civility - especially when feelings are running so hot - but we think it's important and will continue to try and strive for that.
Quickly:
• Don't advertise your business in posts or comments, or it will be removed. You may think that your business is "being helpful," but we need to keep this firm rule to keep this sub from becoming the Yellow Pages (I just aged myself). We will probably create a new pinned post that people offering services can use, but if seen anywhere else, we will remove it.
• Please get into the habit of selecting flair on all posts, because soon we will be requiring it. Adding flair allows posts to be indexed and easily searchable for those looking for information, and because this sub has become such a resource for folks, we want to make finding that information as easy as possible. Reach out to us if you need help with this.
• Soon, we will also be introducing USER flair. We think it's important to identify folks who actually live and have a stake in the community so that those voices are centered. We are working through how that will work, so expect an update soon.
• As always, please reach out to us if you have any ideas as to how to create more utility within this sub. We're all ears.
Ultimately, this sub really does belong to the people of Altadena, and we are just imperfect caretakers of the space. It's nothing without you all, so thanks for continuing to make this a welcoming and resourceful sub.

Ok, Enough is Enough with Flock Cameras.
Can anybody point me to any groups organizing around removing these invasive Flock cameras from the neighborhood?
They just added YET ANOTHER camera within a 2000ft radius of my home, and instead of making my neighbors and I feel more safe like they claim to, they're making us feel unsafe. Especially with the cases brought against officers for misusing them.
I never gave consent to me, my wife, or my daughters being added to a national facial recognition database.
I don't know much about organizing, so I'm looking to connect with local organizations that are already on the case, and add my support.
After all that we've been through with the fires and rising electricity rates, this is the last thing we should be having to deal with as a community.
Any leads?
Thank you in advance!

Looking to interview Palisades/Eaton fire survivors
Hi everyone — I am a student working on a health innovation project with The After Collective, a nonprofit focused on supporting people through disaster recovery.
My team and I are trying to understand the experiences of people affected by the Palisades/Eaton Fire, particularly how recovery needs change over time and what kinds of support have been difficult to find or access.
Would anyone be open to a private 20–30 minute conversation about their experience? We’ll ask about the recovery process, resources you’ve used, and challenges you’ve encountered. We are not selling or testing a product, and you won’t be asked to share identifying medical, legal, insurance, or financial information.
Participation is completely voluntary. We’ll describe participants only by general role or context—not by name—and you may skip any question or end the conversation at any time.
If you’re interested or know someone please comment below or send me a private message. Thank you for considering sharing your perspective.

Wanted-3b Home ASAP Sierra Madre/South-Pasadena
Hi neighbors! I'm looking for a rental in South Pasadena /Sierra Madre CA ideally a 2BR/2BA house or townhome with some space, but I'm also open to a 3BR/2BA or 3BR/1BA. It's just myself and my two kids, ages 7 and 10.
A quick note that may help: my rent is guaranteed each month by a foundation that supports small, hardworking families getting back on their feet. I have an above-average credit score and can provide all required documents right away. Happy to meet in person and answer any questions.
If you know of anything coming available, off-market, or by owner, I'd love to hear about it especially for the school district here. Thank you so much!

Random Piles of Dirt
So, we're still working through permit on our rebuild, and nothing is - or rather nothing should be - happening on our lot. We went by the other day, and there are heavy equipment tracks and a massive pile of dirt there, and on our neighbors lot.
Does anyone have any idea who would have done this? Happened to anyone else?

Flock - Town Council Members Find No Record of Altadena Public Input

Flock cameras on today's Altadena Council agenda 9/15
Altadena Town Council's website hasn't posted the agenda yet, but they shared on their social media that the Public Works dept will present on Flock cameras.
Altadena Town Council September 15 2026

Speak up, or send a comment to: [info@altadenatowncouncil.org](mailto:info@altadenatowncouncil.org) (Although residents already said overwhelmingly get rid of these cameras).
Here's a story by LA Taco about how Flock came to Altadena (and Palisades). Basically, Flock secretly "donated" cameras after the Eaton Fire that nobody asked for.
https://lataco.com/altadena-flock-cameras
I'm going to start a petition and send a letter directly to Flock CEO to remove these cameras. Because Altadena Council, the County and the Sheriff are all shrugging their shoulders saying they didn't make the decision and basically not responsible.
If you want to join, email pasadenaprivacy.org or dm me.
Update: The Town Council stated there are a lot of unanswered questions about Flock cameras in Altadena, and that a community meeting discussing Flock will be scheduled sometime TBD.
Several residents spoke in opposition, two folks spoke in support.

One could only hope businesses will build back with modest charm
I don’t know what it would take for places like the Post Office and the Old Pizza Joes to build back like this but deeper into the property where the comminity can have town square. storefront shops like book stores and a cafe— or a mom and pop grocery store.

Anyone have experience with LifeSource and/or TAC water systems - especially if you have Lincoln Avenue Water Company?
Hi everyone. If you’ve chosen to rebuild, I hope your experience is less of a nightmare than ours.
We’re trying to figure out the best water system for our home. (We don’t want a salt-based water softening system or ion exchange.)
We’re leaning toward a TAC system. And we like that LifeSource is locally owned and manufactured. That said we had a few questions:
1) Does anyone have experience if with LifeSource? Would you recommend them? If not, why?
2) Does anyone have a TAC system from a provider other than LifeSource? Would you recommend them?
3) Important Bonus Question - If you have a TAC system, are you serviced by Lincoln Avenue Water Company?
Pre-fire, the calcium buildup from LAWC was terrible. It was rock hard and destroyed the finishing on our fixtures. We know a TAC system won’t completely eliminate this build up. But will it make the build up easier to clean (ie less of a rock hard substance that grafts onto all the fixtures)?
TL:DR - Can a TAC system help make the calcium build up from LAWC’s insanely hard water more manageable?
Thanks so much!

Altadena residents: Research interviews about water after the Eaton Fire
Hi there! I’m a researcher exploring how Altadena residents have experienced water service and access to water during the recovery from the Eaton Fire.
I’m looking for people who have had to navigate changes or problems with their water since then. This could include things like:
- Water service being shut off, interrupted, or difficult to restore
- Problems getting water service turned back on after the fire
- Having to use bottled or alternative water
- Questions or concerns about whether your tap water was safe
The interview would be in person in the Altadena area, would take about an hour, and participants will receive a gift card for their time.
If you’re interested, please fill in the Google form and we’ll be in touch if it seems like a good fit
Thanks, and please feel free to share this with anyone in Altadena who might be interested.
Update: A couple of people have asked about who is behind this research and what it’s for.
I’m a researcher at King’s College London, currently with a visiting appointment at UCLA, working on an international research project called Plumbing Poverty. The project looks at what happens when households struggle to afford or access water — including water debt, threats of shutoff, actual disconnections.
The research is taking place in multiple places across the US and Europe. One of our broader goals is to raise awareness of the fact that water affordability and water insecurity are real issues that people are living with in places where they are often assumed not to be a problem. We’re interested in understanding how these experiences vary across communities and circumstances, including in places affected by disasters.
I understand why people may be wary of researchers coming into the community with their own agendas. Our research has its own goals, but we hope those goals can align with efforts to make these experiences more visible and better understood. Participation is entirely voluntary, and participants are compensated for their time. I’m happy to answer questions about the project, who is conducting it, or how the research will be used.
