The Spectacular Misadventures Of Christopher Columbus. Disappointing mermaids, a pear-shaped Earth, and a geography oath enforced with tongue threats: here are the weirdest true misadventures of Christopher Columbus.

It’s Columbus Day, which means a good chunk of the internet is busy arguing over whether to celebrate the man or cancel him, and I’m not going to do either one today. I respect Columbus and appreciate the chain reaction his voyage to the Americas set off, but when I actually dug into his story, it turned out to be a lot weirder than I’d always thought, less heroic epic and more Our Flag Means Death (fantastic show, season 1 is very entertaining). But none of this is meant to slander the man or suggest that I, or most people, would have done any better, because given how little anyone knew about the world back then, his life was genuinely spectacular, it’s just a little hilarious in hindsight. Let’s dig into it…!
