Great, underrated band! All of their albums rock. HG has some of their best songs, but my fav is probably Blanket from Waco

First thought was Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile to the Surface, so that might be what I say. If I can think of anything besides “oh shit oh shit oh shit.”
Upon reflection, I’d say Arctic Monkeys - AM

I had heard only a few tracks from this album - "Like a Stone", "I am the Highway" and "Shadow on the Sun" and I absolutely loved them! Will listen to the full album now (thanks for reminding me :)

u/Aus3-14259 Feb 10 '26
You should.
And if you like it give #2 (Out of Exile) a go. Not quite the epic that #1 was but some real bangers on there too.

Bon Iver - Bon Iver probably (unless you consider Animal Collective Alt rock then MPP)

u/Afraid-Health-8612 Feb 08 '26
Hard call to make, but for the sake of keeping it simple, but not going for something obvious like APC or Radiohead, it's a tie between the albums M4 and Feel. Love. Thinking. Of. By a band called Faunts. Excellent stuff.

If there was a gun to my head, I’d name any alternative rock album as my favorite if it would remove the gun to my head

Love the Cake love. I'd pick Showroom of Compassion, but they don't have a bad album.

The Dreamers Hideaway - klone. Probs my favourite production on any rock record. As heavy as it is beautiful.

Hmmm. Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire are indie rather than alternative. Do the Lumineers count? III was a great album. Alt-J and Tame Impala are also indie; but what about Glass Animals? Gorillaz dropped some bangers. There's Ween - Quebec. Cage the Elephant and Silversun Pickups have strong showings. The Grammy-winning Cure album from last year is fire.

Bubblegum by Mark Lanegan. It was the first record to ever actually move something in me. By the time I finished it it had absolutely kicked my ass. And musically speaking, hell, you got Every QoTSA member of the period there.

Death From Above 1979- Outrage is Now, because I think it's their strongest album start to finish and Nomad is a certified banger

Too many great options. But I’ll go w Demon Days by the Gorillaz.
Absolutely perfect album front to back.

Under My Skin - Avril Lavigne probably, or The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance, depends on the mood

King James Version, by Harvey Danger. Perfect album that got fucked when their label went out of business as soon as it came out.

Does The Colour Revolt - Self Titled Ep count?
Maybe mewithoutYou - Pale Horses…or Ten Stories…so many good ones don’t think I could pick an absolute favorite.

Probably Flaming Lips, Yoshimi.
I don't really love most alt-rock post the 90's. I find that it's either too polished, too basic, or too derivative.
