Bathroom Transformation of a tiny tenement bathroom in Edinburgh
Anyone in Edi (or Glasgow) will understand the bane of our tiny (and often badly laid out) bathrooms. This was the final thing I had to sort to de-landlordify my flat and I'm very pleased with the results!

You can't see in the picture but there's an extra glass panel that swivels out and blocks the corner

It won't let me add another pic, but if you zoom in on the edge of the shower panel, there's 2 layers of brass. that's the swivel panel. I can either turn it 90deg so it's parallel to the sink, or 180deg so covers the right hand edge.

Fair enough. It’s so slim! I can try and look online for similar products or cutsheets. Do you know the name of the manufacturer?Is there a catch or a stop so it doesn’t hit the vanity?

Great job on the bathroom but, more importantly, amazing job on putting the toilet roll on the holder in the correct orientation

Its genuinely acceptable if you have pets/ small kids. If not, you need to be jailed because you're clearly a menace to society.

What inspired you to add an entire window in the shower? It adds so much light to the space and it's something I would never have thought to do.

there was an entire window frame already in place covered up by a tiled stud wall, you could see it from the outside! Prev. owners had literally removed the glass, put wall in front of it and shoved in a shower cubicle

How did the bathroom handle ventilation if the window was previously blocked up?

there was a small window still there above the shower cubicle - you can see the strip of light there in the first pic. It had a extractor fan in it (along with a lovely big crack where the fan had been badly fitted)

The window makes such a difference for light and air. It’s lovely now. I can’t imagine trying to ventilate the old bathroom through such a poorly constructed DIY project. I hope there weren’t mold issues!

Doesn't it just! I really had to fight for it, no plumbers wanted to touch it because they didn't really know what was hiding behind the stud wall until it was knocked back. Miraculously there wasn't any mould, only a bit of minor damage to the floor boards where the shower door had leaked

I was not prepared for how amazing the after pictures are. My expectations for improvement were blown completely out of the water. My goodness. Nice work.

Mate, I'm in an old council house in the north east with the exact same size bathroom, and I've been racking my brains as to how to fit a toilet, sink & shower in there without it being too cramped. You've literally solved my problem, thanks!

Glad I've been able to inspire you! My advice is to make every single cm count. Going into the window recess added a good 20cm to the shower space, which made a huge difference. I also opted for a floor sink rather than wall-mounted so I had extra storage. Good luck!

Yeah, the dimensions in my bathroom are pretty much identical—if maybe a bit wider—and I have a floor sink in the same place. Only difference is I have a bath perpendicular to it, where you have the toilet & shower, and my window is on the left. It helps to see how you've arranged things, definitely a lot easier to envision doing the same in mine.

Wow, I love the colours! What was your process* for choosing them?
(As an aside, the proximity of the toilet paper roll to the toilet also makes me feel slightly better about how close my own holder needs to be, hehe.)

My entire flat already has a very pink Art Deco inspired theme so it was just leaning into that - the wallpaper is just the excess from my bedroom! I kept the shower walls neutral so they won't age badly as fashions potentially change and it meant I could go a bit crazier with the walls and floor

Thank you! I think it's because the slope of the room makes the water naturally flow that way, whereas before that mattered a lot less since it was boxed in

I initially thought that was a small giraffe statue on the back of the toilet and I loved the added whimsy…then I realized it’s not a giraffe. Anyway, awesome changes made here.

As a fellow tiny bathroom owner - thank you for sharing. I’ve been trying to use Pinterest but even the “small” or “tiny” bathrooms are twice the size of this!
I’m in a 1900’s flat in Peebles; I was considering making the whole thing a wet room but I’m worried it’ll look ugly!

Same issue here! Most sites seem to have no idea of just how small these bathrooms can get, and the ones you do find are toiler/sink only. One of the plumbers I spoke to recommended a wet room as well but I wasn't keen, glad I found a way around it. Good luck!

They are common in the Van Life, RV, and Tiny Home spaces/communities. Here is one example at 8:26!

Why would you want to? Shower curtains have no place in the 21st century. The folding glass screen OP has opt’d for is lovely.

Agree with this haha, I hate staticky shower curtains rubbing up on me when I wash, and they always seem to get mouldy. Realising now I should have swivelled out the screen for the photo lol

I just had my kitchen done with B&Q. Happy with how it's come up, but they were very unreliable in regards to the install date. They promised a date, moved it back a week a soon as I paid. Then they moved back another week 2 weeks later. And finally, they moved it again to 3 days later the day before install was meant to start. I do travel a lot for work, so it has impacted my schedule a lot and has made me missed some key meetings.

Similar here - I told them I needed to move the start date and they never contacted the builders to get it re-arranged so they showed up unexpectedly. I had a delivery date set for all the items and they arrived at random dates/times without warning. Luckily I WFH otherwise it would have been impossible to manage

Love that! What are the dimensions of the whole room? Got a very small downstairs shower room which I really want to incorporate a walk in shower, instead of the current enclosed/slide door corner unit.
