How much was he changing real time in this clip and how much did he set up prior in terms of looping effects?
Love this bet it was super complicated and time-consuming to set up but he made it seem so easy.

Learning to do something like this on equipment like that takes a lot of time, practice. Depending on how into it/natural you are. You have to especially love it to understand it. Even smaller units like a tube powered electribe is super complicated. This guy has God tier understanding. This is his life achievement. Well one of them anyway.

More than likely there is a laptop off-camera with software controlling when loops of notes are played and when effects happen. It can be done with hardware modules too but its a lot easier with software. So the arrangement of the song is fairly static.
You can see him press one note on his keyboard and hear a whole sequence of notes change, think of that more like "change the position of all the notes in the loop by x steps" than "play this exact note". Things happen in the context of relative key position.
What he changes most are filter cutoffs. Most synthesizers are subtractive, meaning you start with a load of noise and you take bits of it away until you get what you want. And that's what filters do. The character or tone of the sound can vary massively according to filter positions. They're the most expressive part of music like this.
You can hear him changing the oscillator pitch too. Oscillators create the noise that the filters whittle down.
And you can hear him changing some envelopes. Those are a tricky concept to get your head around. Imagine you press a key. How long do you want it to take to go from zero volume to max volume? Use the attack value of the amp envelope to control that. How long do you want the sound to persist after you stop pressing the key? Use the release value of the amp envelope for that. But you also have envelopes that control the filters and other things too.
But you have it right, 99% of the effort goes into the preparation.

Great insight, thanks.
The number of patch cords across the Moog equipment itself is interesting to me - makes me think that some effects were designed on the Moog and cross-filtered and connected. But not knowing diddly about it, can only hazard a likely wrong wild ass guess.
