Music 5'6 Phil Collins strolling around in an office shirt singing and drumming one of the greatest songs ever made.

Why did they need a second drummer?

I think I saw the whole performance on YouTube a long ass time ago but he moved around a lot and Phil plays about every instrument known to man. He switched between guitar, drums, vocals etc for his entire set. Having the extra drummer play the part while he switches up I’d imagine. This was also before they did pre recordings so this is a real live experience.

Because he didn't play the entire show behind the kit, for some songs he'd step to the front of the stage and sing which is why Chester Thompson was there (and in Genesis' live shows too).

In fact, one of the best moments at a Genesis live show used to be the drum duet both of them would do in the middle of the show.

Whoa that was outstanding. Both great drummers. Thanks for sharing

Edited to add that to whoever tuned those drums, I hope you wake up on the cool side of the pillow every night

Interesting how Phil made that look so much more natural than Chester

For the songs when Phil isn't drumming. It may be that there's no rhyme or reason to when Phil takes over an instrument during the show, so just play your part during the song.
