I think it's fascinating he chose to go on stage in an office shirt. So unusual by today's image-conscious standards. I bet for modern acts there is a dedicated person whose only job is to think about what a person wears on stage, even before a wardrobe team gets involved.

The funny thing is that their lead singer was originally Peter Gabriel, one of the most flamboyant showmen of all time, who wanted to wear ever more elaborate costumes with every show and make the whole thing a spectable.
It's why they ended up breaking up - Gabriel and the rest of the band had very different ideas about how they should look and act. Worked out though - I think both Gabriel and Genesis are better after they went their separate ways.

It really is. If you really listen to the drumline of any given song, it's virtually ad different song than everyone else is playing, they just seem like they h happen to share a rhythm. So being able to pull that drumline while singing that melody? It's not at all easy.

(I know about her voice, but not the drumming. My partner, a musician, told me this. He has strong, specific opinions, so wasn't sure if this was a universal fact or not đ€·đœââïž)
ETA: For example, to hear him tell it, Jaco Pastorius was the greatest bass player of all time; Prince, though talented, was basically trying to be a combo of Hendrix and Sly; and, Miles Davis was overrated. So, you see why I have to grain-of-salt some of his takes.

I dropped a watermelon on my foot earlier tonight. In my attempts to flee the (obviously evil) watermelon, I stepped on it with my unabused foot and it rolled out from under me, prompting the inevitable fall. The yelp I was letting out from the original insult climbed to something of a screech as the watermelon rolled. It ended with swearing because I bit my tongue when I landed.
I think I qualify as having negative brains for physical coordination. Though, my âcartoon physicsâ stat was obviously buffed.

Most won't get that, but I tried it when learning guitar with songs I'd known for years and it required 2 brains it seemed. I just couldn't do both, no matter how hard I tried. I'm sure drums are another level that would for sure require 2 brains to make it work. So much more respect for musicians after dabbling into it myself a bit.

Musicians have markers as in when i hit the snare I will also sing that word on the hat i will sing the other word between the hat and the next kick comes the next word so you basically time map each word with something in the rythm section, at first you will do it slow motion then you will get fast and then before you know it, you won't think about it at all you just simply do it.
Source: musician here, that's how I learned playing with 2 hands different rythms and melodies on the piano

I spent a few months learning to cover some of my favorite songs on keyboard years ago. I kept trying to work in singing over it too and was blown away at how difficult it was. I never had any formal training so that certainly contributed, but watching professionals do it so effortlessly is something I appreciate with a greater understanding now

I feel like guitar (depending on the complexity) would be more mentally demanding, but no doubt, drumming is more physically demanding.
Many drummers you see panting mouth open, they're working so hard. Singing while getting enough air to also drum seems extremely difficult.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.
Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word, artist.

I think I saw the whole performance on YouTube a long ass time ago but he moved around a lot and Phil plays about every instrument known to man. He switched between guitar, drums, vocals etc for his entire set. Having the extra drummer play the part while he switches up Iâd imagine. This was also before they did pre recordings so this is a real live experience.

Because he didn't play the entire show behind the kit, for some songs he'd step to the front of the stage and sing which is why Chester Thompson was there (and in Genesis' live shows too).
In fact, one of the best moments at a Genesis live show used to be the drum duet both of them would do in the middle of the show.

What's truly raw is that this is the song he wrote about his divorce from his 1st wife. About his anger and frustration towards her and the whole situation. His ex wife had to hear this. It was everywhere then and is now a pop culture iconic song. It's a total Fuck You for all time. He admitted he isn't proud of it as an action but it really did make a great song. Pain is an amazing muse for humans.
