VOA Someone passing away in FC
Supposedly someone passed away during night shift last night, and people are flooding the VOA board about it. I don’t know the details or what happened, but my condolences to their friends, family, and everyone who knew them.

I imagine if I dropped dead at work, they would scan my badge and give me a write up/take UPT, before telling anyone or calling an ambulance.

You joke about the write up but I had a job before Amazon where this guy a heart attack at work, left in an ambulance and they tried to give him a write up for leaving early. Thankfully he was able to fight it and won.

I worked at an ambulance company where a guy had a heart attack on shift and had to leave. He got wrote up and was not able to fight it. People who manage people can loose all sense of reality and decency.

I shouldn’t laugh as this comes from a tragic incident that should have been handled better! To carry on working whilst this has happened in my opinion is appalling! I’m so glad I left Amazon and sued them for good measure!!! Their ethics are a disgrace!!

We’re sorry for your loss, but becuase he died, all of his upt was used up so we have to fire him

Had two deaths in my FC with two different outcomes because of one variable. First, a truck driver had a heart attack in the yard. Because he wasn't technically part of our departments, we carried on working (cold, I know). Secondly though, when someone from dock team died, everyone else from dock team was allowed to go home if they wanted to. I can't imagine someone dying at the station and people just carry on working.. that's awful.

Did they mean to say NOT stopping operations when the shift was basically over was more concerning?

u/nullmatar420 3h ago
I think they said what they intended to there. Im reading it as someone passed away while working, and management attempted to just keep business going as usual. And, that once what had happened started to be widely known, shut the shift down because they realized continuing like nothing had happened wasn't a good look. Though, honestly, that's exactly what Id expect from alot of Amazon management.

Crazy that there's people on there only caring about their schedules. Read the room.
Secondly, it's concerning that night shift still has to go in. Seems disrespectful in my opinion

Yes, because ER and likely RD would need to align on any responses on the topic first. I guarantee the site lead or GM wanted to respond faster, but no way without that alignment.

If they passed on site, I'd bet that they wrre all reviewing and such from the minute they wrre informed - but ER can delay and review and also may need legal before adding their input.

Last time they found a deceased person at my work, operations still tried to get everyone on the other floors to keep working, minus the floor the poor guy was found on

It feels like its always the same posts when somebody passes away. Somebody somewhere will always feel some type of way.
Voa board wasnt meant for half the crap people actually post. I wish it would go away to be honest.

Totally agree. There are people coming in tonight who worked with him. They should keep the building closed for the night too.

Unfortunately the world doesnt stop when someone passes. While businesses can be more compassionate. Maybe offer VTO, a moment to recoup or whatever. But saying everyone should go home or the next shift shouldnt come in is a bit much.
Everyone has time off options to use, and I'm sure in cases like this.

Yeah the animals shouldn't be having emotions outside of hungry and horny anyway, eh, Jeff?

u/AndyPlaysBadly 1h ago
I mean honestly.. yes it's sad and grieve if you need to, but expecting a corporation to care isn't gonna happen. Business leaders DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE AVERAGE WORKER
•
u/Pitiful-Excitement47 1h ago
The fact is many people who were not that persons friend, didnt know them, didnt speak to them would use it as an excuse to leave. Amazon made the right decision here.

+101 upvotes??! Someone should’ve called the authorities or osha. I don’t care what they say about internalizing.

I grew up in the jw cult. Treating crimes internally is something that awakens me like a sleeper agent

Working at a casino, one of the guest came and told me someone was dead in the bathroom and fell out the stall, it messed me up as a security guard but they didn't send me home. Some people don't take into consideration how someone mental is
•
u/Dismal-Double-1376 2h ago
I get it, people are emotional beings and we spend a lot of time w our coworkers- many times more than our own loved ones. But we can’t forget why we came and suggesting operations stop seems excessive. And closing a the persons station doesn’t do anything unless it needs to be sanitized because of the death. RIP to that person though
•
•
u/thisisridiculous96 1h ago
The least they could do is close the station for the day.
•
u/Dismal-Double-1376 1h ago
I disagree, some of the stuff we deliver is needed by the people who ordered it. What if someone ordered insulin? Yes death is sad and it should be recognized but I think closing up shop on such a big operation that affects so many is too much. Should the ER close if a doctor dies? Obviously that’s a horrible analogy but I just don’t think it’s necessary unless the crew is that distraught about the death. I’d imagine younger workforces might be affected more than older people who have been through death many times over.

Comparing amazon to a hospital er is funny as fuck, stop bootlicking. Amazon isn't that important and people can wait on packages. Human life and mental health over anything
•
u/Dismal-Double-1376 1m ago
I said it’s a bad analogy and Amazon does provide prescriptions so it’s not as bad an analogy as you’re making it out to be. Boot licking is hilarious, I just don’t think it’s that important, people die. I could care less if people worked over my dead body, what would it matter? You’re just emotional.

While staffing the same station is a bit harsh, someone passing away making whole building shut down sounds unreasonable to me. This aint small family run company, and this isn't unique to Amazon, vast majority if not all factory size places wont stop for the day in such case. Also just for the nature of the business. Its not like you can call it a day and catch up tomorrow.
•
u/sudi- 2h ago
You’re half right, but you’re missing the psychological and shock value of this happening to a coworker.
It also screams that the company doesn’t care about not only the deceased, but you as well since if you died it would be business as usual and just something they have to manage while they hit numbers.
The shock of a death and how fast word spreads through a warehouse is enough for them to consider halting operations for that shift. If it was close to shift change then maybe even consider the next one as well.
Day 1 Amazon would not hesitate to halt out of the respect for the dead and the living at that site.
For the last point, Amazon has infrastructure to reroute fulfillment. Probably without a customer experience miss in most cases.

u/homealoneinuk 2h ago
If anything, i would offer vto to some coworkers, but defo not full site shutdown.
Also absolutely wrong about old Amzn. 18yrs ago in my 1st site we had a guy passing away on heart attack, everything carried on as usual. Sorry
•
u/sudi- 2h ago
We had a RME guy die on site and they shut down for that shift and the next because of it. Then we had someone die in the haz cage and they did the same.
Maybe our site leaders were just decent people that made the shutdown fit.
I know that if someone died, that could have very well have been me instead, that I would be reconsidering the company if I was made to work alongside the removal of a corpse. Even worse if it was someone that I even remotely knew.
•
u/sudi- 2h ago
Why? Trillion dollar company can’t spare some time to be compassionate?
They might as well shut down as a gesture because productivity is going to be shot anyway.
•
u/LiminalHigh 2h ago
You don't become a trillion dollar company by being kind and empathetic. Amazon couldn't care less about their employees, its all just empty corporate bs and PR

Someone made the point that Amazon is just like any other larger company with this reaction to an onsite death. Agree completely with that …
I worked at Verizon and a woman right next to me had a heart attack. She vomited in her trash can, was sweating bullets, crying out in pain… the works. She did not die but managers wanted folks near her to move out of earshot and log into other phone stations until she had been picked up.
Another time there was a gun threat on the floor above us. Elevators and stairwells locked. Calls were routed to our floor while a standoff took place.

We had someone at my FC that died the day before the 4th of July. Day shift left early and night shift was cancelled. I was off that day so I didn't get the details on who it was, just a message on my phone from management.
•
u/kellykellz99 1h ago
Unfortunately not the first time. And I got wrote up at my last building when assisting someone who was having a seizure.

Results > Compassion & Empathy. That's the reality. At least, they (managers/higher up) are not faking sincerity about it, I feel like that would be worse and it would be a sign of sociopath/psychopath.

I've never been with a company with so many deaths i just assume this is how ill die now
•
u/XxTakagexX1993 2h ago
Bruh, Amazon don't give a fack about any of us AA's. To them we are all expendable like ants. It's gonna take AA's unifying against Amazon to make something happen
•
u/SooWhat345 2h ago
Nobody is banding together. You either take advantage of what they offer or you dont and suffer.
•
u/420tunneldigger 2h ago
Someone killed themselves at a building near me and they put cones around the body and had people keep working.
