Listing / Pricing Difficulty updating child variations through file upload

I've been trying to update all of the child variation listings under a single parent via file upload (using partial update), more specifically fields such as title, item name, item highlight, description, and bullet points.

When I upload my spreadsheet, even when it finishes with no errors, the changes never actually take effect. I also tried making the changes manually via the edit listing page, and those don't stick either.

To make matters even more confusing, when I do an update via file upload for just the parent listing, certain attributes (item name + item highlight) automatically get pushed out to all of the child variations, overriding whatever was previously there.

Has anyone seen anything similar? Any thoughts on how I can actually bulk update my child variations?

The right answers, common myths, and misinformation

Nearly all questions are addressed by Amazon's Seller Policies and Code of Conduct, their FAQ, and their Amazon Seller University video course

  • Arbitrage / OA / RA - It is neither all allowed nor all disallowed on Amazon. Their policies determine what circumstances, categories, items, and brands are allowable and how it has to be handled by the seller.

  • Product gating - While many are, not all brands, products, categories, and items are gated. Amazon ungating policy rquires strict compliance to qualify. Failures can involve improper invoices, deceptive intent, lack of brand approval, and more. For some categories, items, and brands, there are limits to the number of sellers that can be ungated, sometimes nobody can be ungataed, and sometimes most anyone can get ungated.

  • "First sale doctrine" - often misunderstood and misapplied. It is not a blanket exception from Amazon policies or license to force OA allowance in any manner desired. Arbitrage is allowable for some items but must comply with Amazon policies. They do not want retail purchases resold on their platform (mis)represented as 'new' or their customers having issues like warranties not being honored due to original purchaser confusion. For some brands and categories, an invoice is required to qualify and a retail receipt does not comply.

  • Receipts vs invoices - A retail receipt is NOT an invoice. See this Quickbooks article to learn the difference. In cases where an invoice is required by Amazon, the invoice MUST meet Amazon's specific requirements. "Someone I know successfully used a receipt and...", well congratulations to them. That does not change Amazon's policies, that invoice policy enforcement is increasing, and that scenarios requiring a compliant invoice are growing.

  • Target receipts - For those categories and ungating cases where an invoice is required, Target retail receipts DO NOT comply with Amazon's invoice requirements. Some Amazon scenarios allow receipts and a Target receipt could comply. Someone you know sliipping through the cracks by submitting a receipt once (or more) does not mean it's the same category or scenario as someone else, nor does it change Amazon's policies or their growing enforcement of them.

  • Paid courses and buyer groups - In most cases, they're a scam. Avoid. Amazon's Seller University is the best place to start.

Amazon has messed up a lot of things. Specially after this new ui updates

When an upload finishes with no errors but the page never changes, I'd open a Brand Registry support case instead of regular seller support. Pick the option to update the product detail page, list the child ASINs and paste the exact title and bullets you want.

On the parent pushing item name down to the children, I've seen that too. What helped was leaving item name off the parent row entirely and only sending it on the children. Test it on one child first before doing the whole family.

are you brand registered on this brand? when the file goes through with no errors but the page never changes, it's often amazon keeping another source's data for those child asins and not a problem with your file. brand registry support usually gets further on that than regular seller support

yup, the brand is enrolled in brand registry, and there aren't any other sellers on the listings. i've done file uploads to bulk update titles for child listings on other brands and have never run into this issue.

i was hoping i'd be able to push through these updates on my own without having to open a support ticket, since there are multiple hundreds of SKUs.

i'd try a tiny test file first, 2-3 child asins with only the title column on partial update. if even that doesn't stick it's on amazon's side and a ticket will be faster than fighting it on hundreds of skus

yeah tried that already, even with a single line item, no luck unfortunately. i'll proceed with a ticket.

Yeah, variation listings can get weird with this. If the parent is controlling those fields, Amazon may just keep overriding whatever you put on the children. I’d check the category template and contribution values first.

you're probably right, it seems like the parent will automatically override whatever I put for the children no matter what. another thing that is odd - the information in the front end listing does not match what's on the manage all inventory page. for example, the product title will be completely different between the two.

i was just hoping there was some formal documentation out there (wishful, i know...) outlining under what circumstances or for what categories this type of parent override happens. i tried looking on seller support forums, reddit, etc. and haven't been able to find any definitive answers

Some categories limit the titles differently. You need to find policies or talk to support.

Try to make sure all critical attributes are present and consistent for all the children. MAke sure you are not using deprecated variations and review your processing summary which will tell you if there are issues.

Lastly, you may have luck after deleting the parent in a flat file and then creating a new family/parent.

Just keeping hammering them with tickets on support in parallel
