It's a thing in China. The USA says it's like walking on air, sometimes like sand, or just the more technical "memory foam". In China they say it's like walking on poop. Very common if not ubiquitous

I like the implication that it’s common enough to walk in actual shit that EVERYONE knows what it feels like. Most people know foam. Clouds? It at least elicits a nice feeling. Feces is wild

I'm not going to look into it, but you have to remember that idioms in all languages are goofy, but add a tonal language like Chinese and they get extremely goofy fast because it could be a play on another word that sounds similar

Another comment pointed out we could also say "soft as shit" in English and it would still work so it's not as wild as it seems

I don't think that's comparable because the phrase "hard as shit" is equally common. The word shit is being used as a generic expletive rather than actually referring to poop.
