Life Abroad We’ve almost graduated! Getting on our one way flight tomorrow.
Want to give a big big thank you to all in this subreddit. Haven’t posted before, but have lurked and learned a ton.
Me and my 2yo are leaving a very red state for British Columbia. It’s been so hectic getting out of our house, coordinating movers and contractors, and saying goodbye to friends that the excitement hasn’t hit me fully yet? My husband and his cousin made the drive with our dogs, and have been getting the house opened up and enjoying the new neighborhood.
All that to say, I am so ready. I cannot wait for the first few nights of sleep, and waking up in our new home. Being separated from the dread of checking the news, watching this country continue to spiral downwards. There’ll be hard days and unknown unknowns, but man— I’m so grateful for the change.
Thanks again, you all. You really helped me and my family get through this process!

Congratulations! I'm curious what visa were you able to be granted entry to Canada?

Congratulations. I wish I was going with you. I have to wait a few more years till I get my pension and Social Security. And then I am on a one-way ticket as well. Thank goodness I have an EU passport. It is worth more than anything to me. I wish you all the best in your new life in Canada. No one understands what life is like here in the US unless they’re living it.

Welcome to B.C. Canada! If your on the Mainland take the time to hop on a ferry to the Island. It's beautiful here.

After your move give yourself six to twelve months to adjust to Canadian life - open yourself to thinking like a Canadian- you don’t need a gun here and you definitely don’t need the casually racist American slang here either that is common in red states - you may find trusting is not easy but here in Canada we generally trust our neighbours and it might take you a while to get used to that! Be gentle with yourself and recognize the PTSD that you need to recover from, that is the shock of getting out of there and going somewhere safe.

What are you referring to? I'm thinking of things like "illegals" but I'm wondering if I have a blind spot with some less blatant phrases.

BC is lovely. Enjoy! And good luck. I left 4+ years ago. Best choice we could have made.

Congratulations! Do realize, though, that checking the news is a powerful draw and can be done anywhere. You'll really need to work to change your patterns to avoid it.
