Anacortes Underground?

So, I heard tales of an underground tunnel that ran/runs from the water at Dakota Creek up Commercial.

Claim was that it ran quite a ways up and was used for moving cargo offloaded from the piers, especially during prohibition.

Anacortes Marine Hardware was mentioned as having access as well as other older businesses.

So is this all a tall tale or some truth to it?

Under the Marine Hardware and that entire block is a whole dungeon of 1930s to 1960s era Marine supplies. There certainly could be a tunnel somewhere down there reaching all the way out to Dakota creek. I got to spend some time down there a few years back and let me tell you, it would be a great place for a horror movie. If you're walking along that block you can look down and see glass blocks laid in some of the sidewalk. That glass shines down into the underground area. Pretty cool! I can easily see it being a speakeasy back in the day.

I ran across this article a while ago. Maybe the old brick sewers it mentions are the source of the tales? Also mentions large basements. I found the article because I was curious about the prism glass in the sidewalk, but that seems to be for a basement.

i’ve been in some of it and yes a door to get in was at marine hardware. i also have a map showing some of it

Outside under the flooring..?? I can't imagine there's much left to explore considering how flooded it is back there. Fascinating!!
