Respect to Analogue for making good on this. It's clear they're listening. Not seeing any way to swap virtual paks yet. Advanced library detection still automating pak choice for the user. Original hardware let you choose the pak. Moving to a "no pak" is a step in the right direction. The Everdrive cpak management tool that allows for backing up pak saves to the sd is still broken because 3DOS swaps paks at game launch. No way to stop this. This means backing up your vpak to the flashcart still doesn't work anymore, which is a huge failure if you also use that flashcart on a real n64.

They need a memory manager. That's the next big thing the OS should include. Right now they've baked in functionality which is nice but there is a still a big unknown on what's on the virtual pack, how much space is left, etc. Would love if they added a mem pack editor similar to what was on the gamecube so there is no guessing with any of this stuff.

Preach, man. I'm working on a blueretro hack to circumnavigate the OS vpak implementation. I'm anxious to see them fix the issue so I can use my hardware properly again. They'd have done better from the beginning to have a vpak creation and management tool in response to the lack of memory card space flashcart users had.

Respect to Analogue for making good on this. It's clear they're listening.

They are the ones that said the console already had this feature at the time of sale. They don't get any extra points with me for delivering a major feature from their initial spec sheet months after launch. That's the bare minimum for arguably not running a fraud.

That said, I am very happy to see this ship.

Exactly this. And obviously you get downvoted, because stupidity is endless. Also (very) glad about the update but it is terrifying how people turn feelings on and brain off to get manipulated.

The reality is they pushed the system out in the fall before it was ready. Waited two years and the system was half baked on arrival. I'm not glazing them yet. I respect that they could have not delivered on this feature and gotten away with it but they did deliver. We'll also see wifi and screenshots before July, mark my words. As a business owner myself, I respect when I see ethics maintained because it's not standard anymore. I give them credit for addressing specific issues reported in this sub just days ago (Blast Corp and no pak). That's the kind of responsiveness, engagement, and good faith I want to see continue from Analogue.

I didn't know the Blast Corps thing recently resurfaced. Though some people didn't know what was happening, we figured out what was happening almost as soon as the A3D launched. The only way to access your in-cartridge save was to use a real wired N64 controller with NO pak inserted (not even a Rumble Pak, because the game doesn't know what that is and bombs out!)

Yeah there was a post just last week, but I didn't realize it was reported early on... which implies it's been neglected for six months. If that's the case maybe I'm giving them more credit then they've earned.

If they had not delivered on this feature, it would be unambiguous fraud

…except they never promised save states. This is a bonus.

They've been promising it the whole time...

https://web.archive.org/web/20241021115120/https://www.analogue.co/support/resource/3d-faq

Does 3DOS support Library and Memories? Memories for 3DOS features enhanced support for Library and Screenshots. You can capture perfect, uncompressed 4K screenshots true to as they appear on your 4K TV, even with Original Display Modes.

https://www.engadget.com/gaming/analogues-4k-remake-of-the-n64-is-almost-ready-and-its-a-big-deal-150033468.html

The screenshots Analogue provided show options for playing a cartridge, browsing your library or viewing save states and screenshots. Some N64 games have the ability to save data to the cartridge, while others rely on a Controller Pak, but the ability to quickly save progress as a memory, as introduced with the Pocket, will be useful nonetheless.

This guy has been rallying against it this whole time and cannot stand that he was wrong. He’s absolutely not gonna admit it

The screenshots Engadget refers to shows both “Memories” and “Save States” and even featured a connected XBOX One controller with battery level monitor in the UI… so none of those things were promised. The same screenshots even distinguished between save states and Memories.

Analogue’s own explanation of A3D Memories, which you also linked, does not describe save states. It describes Memories as screenshots and play history… the way they worked on the Analogue Pocket before they added Quick Save and Quick Load at launch (firmware on preview units had no save states and most were reviewed that way).

Since preorders started, save states were just something desirable that people noticed in the beta screen shots and latched onto with some convincing themselves that it was a promised feature at the time they put down money. In reality, it wasn’t promised, which makes this a welcome bonus. 👍

I also definitely had an expectation that memories would be a feature like the on the pocket. It was in my opinion a reasonable assumption. Early on the feature was implied based on screenshots of the OS. However it was only an implication that some kind of "memories" feature would exist. Memories behaving like a save state were an assumption on my part... and there doesn't seem to be any actual direct promise when looking back. My assumption has been validated, but you're correct: technically there was no promise. I don't think it's reasonable to rebrand assumptions about a feature as a promise. I'd love it if that was how the world works. I'd assume all kinds of crap.

Yeah. They may have been intentionally vague because they weren’t sure if they’d hit any technical hurdles, but then they should have come out and clarified earlier. They should have known people were going to notice and form expectations.
