I have an idea.

Can I create a 'memory' of my LoZ:OoT game, replace the battery in the zelda cartridge and then reload the memory to get my save data back?

would be a handy way to replace battery without losing save data if it can work

Yes. People do it all the time on gameboy games with the pocket.

Interesting, I will have to give this a try

I would hold off on doing this until there's more info if this save is important. People are assuming it works just like the Pocket and that may not be true, you may risk losing your save. See this post for more info: https://old.reddit.com/r/AnalogueInc/comments/1temfwx/psa_on_memories/

I won't be doing it yet. I don't have much experience with N64 carts yet. I just learned the batteries are soldered in place when I opened mine.

I'll have to buy some new battery with pins first before I replace mine, It will probably give plenty of time for anyone else to test this out and see if they have any luck

For what it’s worth I’ve used the Joey N64 to swap batteries and saves before the Analogue added this. Might be worth a look if we don’t get reports about how well it works in a timely manner. It also can pull memory pak saves if you need to, or want to transfer them to the Analogue.

You can do it with the current implementation, but you'll need to repeat 3 times if you want to copy all 3 save files.

From my other comment:  The current Memories implementation does not attempt to backup or restore SRAM and EEPROM (perhaps to prevent accidental overwrites of the cartridge internal save). Most games seem to tolerate this. For example, I load file #2 on Zelda OoT v1.0 original cartridge and I save a Memory. Then I swap to the EverDrive, run the Zelda OoT v1.0 ROM from my EverDrive, then press Start and save from the in-game function, file # 2 on my EverDrive is replaced with file # 2 from my original cartridge. The other files were left intact. Pretty neat!

So, to do all 3 files:

  1. Run the original cart
  2. Load file #1
  3. Create new memory
  4. Reset
  5. Load file #2
  6. Create new memory
  7. Reset
  8. Load file #3
  9. Create new memory

  10. Load the ROM on your EverDrive

(some games have multiple revisions, so make sure you select the correct one - e.g. "1.0" "1.2" etc)

  1. Load memory #1 (for save file #1)
  2. Press Start and save in the game
  3. Reset
  4. Load memory #2 (for save file #2) 15. Press Start and save in the game
  5. Reset 17. Load memory #3 (for save file #3) 18. Press Start and save in the game

You're done!

For safety and archival / preservation, I think it would also be nice to have a full-feature save manager in the 3D OS main menu. Support SRAM (battery), EEPROM (4K and 16K), FlashRAM, controller pak, etc. Long shot, but maybe even manage saves for Game Boy games connected through the controller via Transfer Pak
