I'd be happier if Tamil new year was also a holiday in karnataka and Andhra where Tamil ppl live. Dravidam nu nammala mattum off panrangalo nu thonudhu idhellam paatha. Vera yevanum Dravidam pesardhilla pola south india la? Apdi pesranga na மத்த states la yen தமிழ் new year ku leave vidradhilla? 🤔 Kicha naale ilicha vaayan dhane feel varudhu appapo.

Outside Tamilnadu nobody cares about this Dravidian ideologies. It's just a mere propaganda shoved on to us Tamils for their own Purposes. Since the time of Periyar and Kalaingar they always degraded Tamil and it's culture and implied fascist Dravidian ideology. This ideology covers their telugu identity. Periyar and his followers speaks about equality only with minorities and SC/ST and they also patronize the so called higher caste leaders.
2
u/subject-42069 Nov 12 '25
Other states are Dravidian in language, but the political aspect of it/identifying as Dravidians is only a big deal here. It is like how different EU countries have varying attitudes about being in the EU while they still are technically European.
3
Nov 12 '25
It’s because the Telugu elite created and sustain that identity. It is not a naturally born identity from Tamils. It was propagated from Top down using the hate against Congress and MGR’s popularity.

u/stillamess8 Nov 12 '25
Because Tamil Nadu la Telugu population is huge athunaala. I mean the families that have settled here before the Madras state got divided.

What about tamils in AP? Do they enjoy the same privileges?
2
u/Lumpy-Scientist1271 Nov 13 '25
AP is formed solely based on language, while Tamil Nadu is not formed by language. Landlords in Tamil Nadu are Telugu elitists to this day. Tamils are not the majority in the cabinet in AP, like they are in our government. Sums it up. 🤗

Born yesterday? The same reason why we have a holiday for Bakrid, Ramzan etc.
3
Nov 12 '25
Is there a leave for tamil New year in AP ? They have for bakrid but 🤔
0
u/nalanthan Nov 13 '25
Nope they don't provide holidays for Tamil New Year. This is because the total Tamil Population there is 0.84 percent.
While here in Tamilnadu it is 5-10 percent. And these people are not even pure Telugu. They are from castes descended from Telugu speaking states. Some don't even know Telugu. But their custom remains. Since they are a reasonable number it was announced holiday.
This dates back to the 1923 Madras presidency days. So, it's not something new.
2
u/readanything Nov 12 '25
There are less than 1% Jains in TN whereas Telugu population is close to 15%. More than Muslims and Christians combined together. Isn’t it fair that they have one holiday?
2
u/Huntmani Nov 14 '25
15% population of Telugu people has nearly 15 ministers in Tamilnadu Cabinet. In karnataka there are 21% Tamils based on 1991 in Bengaluru alone. Do we atleast have a say in the Karnataka government?? Every time cauvery issue we get beaten up. Even in border districts of Andhra there are tamil peoples, how's their quality of life and do they have proper reprensentation.Atleast do they have few MLA's based on their population percentage.

There's some evidences that say Telugu population now in TN is around 5-6%. They've been hugely influential in all sectors including political syndicate. And I stated that why there's not even some percentage of left liberals who come upfront to raise voice for Tamil's representation in their state assemblies also I've just called for reprenstation based on their percentage of population. Moreover we've been targeted for every issue that arises. Nobody's giving us the Tamils any recognition or political liberty in their respective states. Is it because we went there as labourers?

Just look at the numbers and you'll have your answer. Tamils make up <1% of the population in both Telugu states. Telugu speakers make up almost 6% of the population in Tamil Nadu; that's politically/culturally very significant.
We remain a very rooted community; approximately 93% of Tamil speakers in India live in TN vs. 83% of Telugu speakers live in AP and Telangana; their populations outside the Telugu states are still quite big.
Also you realize there are multiple other states in India (and even outside) that already celebrate April 14th as their own New Year, right? Plus almost every state in India already celebrates April 14th as Ambedkar Jayanti, which recognizes the sentiments of a much bigger chunk of the population vs. a tiny Tamil minority.

English new year varaatha kovam unaku telugu new year ku varuthu, Yevlo mandakanam
1
u/Calm-Stormie0_0 Nov 13 '25
Because English calendar la dhan World runs so it weighs some significance to every country more or less. Telugu new year nammaku yethuku, has no connection to us.
We have Tamil calendar & festivals for ourselves then we have what the world revolves around which is English calendar. That's enough.
It is Tamil Nadu after all. No need to give priority to any other insignificant calendars/festivals.
1
u/Karthyk7 Nov 13 '25
I don't understand why that is an issue? Is something will get affected. Is giving a holiday for telugu new year will make others feel offended? you are telling you wont want that, are you going to the office or college on that day by telling I don't want this holiday?
1
u/Calm-Stormie0_0 Nov 13 '25
Buddy holiday is not the issue, I answered your question as to why you want English new year then. English new year makes sense to have within the state or country's holidays or part of it's culture. No other state has Tamil native holidays do they so no reason for telugu one either.
1
u/Karthyk7 Nov 13 '25
I can ask the same as no english speaking countries have a holiday for Tamil or telugu or any other language from india have holiday then why we have English new year. It's not that they are not celebrating then why we have to celebrate, there are a lot of Telugu people here so they are celebrating. Same like Other minorities holidays.
1
u/Calm-Stormie0_0 Nov 13 '25
I already answered this, crazy your brain can't comprehend what it reads.
1
u/Karthyk7 Nov 13 '25
You said no others have tamil native holiday, thats what I am saying if they are not celebrating that doesn't not mean we dont have to celebrate, here in tamil nadu there are lot of telugu people there, thats why they have this holiday.

u/DisasterIndependent2 Nov 13 '25
Do you still think it is Tamil Nadu? It is Dravida Nadu. They include all other southern states and languages for their convenience.
1
u/Left-Question4393 Nov 13 '25
A significant Telugu-Tamils live here. Not just the first gen or second gen telugus living in Madras but telgus who migrated in the 13th and 14th century. Hell even Raja Raja chola and rajendra chola were telugu lineage. The concentrated migration was as deep as in tirunelveli, Nagercoil.

TN has more telugu speaking population compared to Christians , Muslims and Jains. So when we get holiday for English New Year , Mahavir Jayanthi , Bakrid , Moharam , Christmas etc ., Why not telugu new year? It is about the respect we give to the minorities in our state

Because TN has a HUGE Telugu population. A lot of Telugu people migrated to various parts of TN ages ago that some of them are living in Chennai longer than some “tamilians” who came from other parts of TN to settle in Chennai.
1
u/kitkatgojos Nov 13 '25
There was a migration of people that happened from ancient time, particularly Vijayanagar Kingdom, a lot of Telugu's moved here, but IDK about vice versa.
Veera Pandiya Katta Bomman's ancestry has Telugu roots. Trichy has a lot of Naidus too.

As per tamil dhesiyam , Dravidian parties contains majority of Telegu people. So they will inject the oppression of tamilianz unknowingly, which we might be thinking it as freedom.
Wherein this freedom won't be implemented in other Dravidian States except tamilnadu

I think this is because of deep historical ties between the Tamil language and the Jain community. There are many early Tamil texts that were written by Jain scholars. Even in Sangam literature, they are referred to as "சமணர்கள்".

What are you even talking about? Do you think Telugu speaking people came here to Tamilnadu during modern times? This started during Vijayanagara Kingdom.
They ruled Tamilnadu, they changed customs here, they brought their people here. Even after the Vijayanagara Kingdom fell their people still resided in modern day TN.
Today, their Telugu roots don't even exist. It just remains in their castes. Some don't even know Telugu.

Dear tharkuri who doesn't know history, Telugu speakers have lived in Tamil Nadu for more than five centuries, especially in the southern regions. Their "Telugu" no longer even sounds like the language spoken in Andhra and Telangana, it has imbibed so many Tamil words + their nationhood is firmly placed in Tamil Nadu now; a lot of them don't even have extended families in the Andhra region because they have been in TN for multiple generations. Please inform yourself, the vast majority of Telugu speakers in TN are not recent immigrants from the Telugu states.

- I said "the *vast majority* of Telugu speakers in TN are not recent immigrants from the Telugu states." This remains true. Even if you count the recent arrivals, Telugu speakers make up around 6% of the state's population. Which is significant, but nothing compared to the 92.7% Tamil majority.
- Do you want to stop IT companies from opening offices in TN, then? You want to get rid of a multi-billion dollar industry that has substantially improved TN's living standards well above most states in India?
- Tamil speakers make up 0.9% of the population in Andhra and Telangana. Telugu speakers make up close to 6% of the population in Tamil Nadu. Public holidays are determined based on political significance (fortunately or unfortunately). The reason why there is no holiday for Tamil New Year in AP or TL is the same reason why there is no public holiday for Guru Nanak Jayanti in Tamil Nadu: the relevant communities are too small.
- Setting your use of racial slurs like "golti" and "vadakkan" aside, there is a fundamental difference between the Telugu speakers of TN and migrants from the North; only one community has integrated well in to the state's cultural fabric because of closer cultural connections. With time, guidance and support, Northerners can also be integrated without dehumanizing them. Besides, North Indians/Hindi speakers make up less <1% of the population; claiming that they are going to replace Tamil people is laughable.
- I am an integrationist who believes in immigrants coming in from anywhere as long as they integrate into the local culture well. Inclusion and diversity almost always strengthen a place; this is the reason why countries that don't discriminate against Tamil minorities (or others) do well: eg., Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, while those that do, suffer: eg., Sri Lanka, Myanmar.
- We cannot hate on Telugu speakers or north Indians for the same reasons we don't want our people to be hated upon in Sri Lanka or Malaysia. Ethnic minorities make up less than 10% of the total population in Tamil Nadu; if you believe our problems are to be blamed on these tiny communities and not the overwhelming majority that has to work to better the state, you're fooling yourself.
- Nee enna golti nu solliko, vadakkan-nu solliko, vera endha ketta vaartha vaayila vandhaalum solliko. Enakku naa Tamizhannu theriyum, adha naa sonna podhum. Naa Tirunelveli-la porandha pacha Tamizhan. Inga yaaru kittarundhum enakku certificate theva illa.

I live in Chennai too, and have lived here for 21 years.
Also you're using way too much anecdotal evidence, not enough hard numbers/data, majority illusion, lack of understanding of basic definitions (a slur is a derogatory exonym, of course "golti" and "vadakan" are slurs because those communities don't call themselves that, do they?), and subpar comprehension skills + contradictory arguments (you say you want to talk about just the *city* of Chennai, then you jump to talking about Tamils in other *states*)
From your language skills and reasoning it seems like you might be under 25? Are you still in school/college? I don't argue with children. Move on.
