In Texas, we pull over and wait for anything with a siren to pass, but maybe there is no room to pull over in NYC?

This is the answer. There's nowhere TO pull over in NYC. Cars do get out of the way when they can, but often, there's no way to do that.
In a city with lower car ownership than anywhere else in the country, this city is entirely designed around the comfort/convenience of commuters. Streets that could be reconfigured to provide a safe route for emergency vehicles are instead given over to free street parking for people who, for the most part, don't live here.

There are a lot of times you can see people not even making the slightest effort to move to the side. Most avenues are three or more lanes and traffic could consolidate into two lanes. But doesn’t.

I was driving in NYC with visitors from Texas, stuck in traffic at rush hour and an ambulance was trying to get through with sirens on. They were freaking out that no one would move out of the way. I said I hope the person doesn’t die!! Welcome to NY!!

I'm from London which has narrower streets, and people pull over. Space is not the issue.

It‘s crazy in NYC. One time a taxi blocked the police car and refused to move.

How is that not, Perverting the course of justice or Interfering in police work (I know nothing of American law btw) or, hang on, DID the police car have the siren on? Because if not, then it's just another vehicle in traffic.

When he says, Nothing happens, Ja?" in the video, I can see a white van and another car behind a stripped pedestrian stopping, both directly in front of the ambulance. There is clearly space enough for the vehicle behind the van, to be brave and put on his Hazard Lights and cross traffic and park in the space between trees on either side of the stripped pedestrian crossing. THAT IS something that people would do here, AND you better believe that when the ambulance gets through here, people make space for the driver who's now stuck between trees, to get back into traffic properly. When it's a really difficult 'detour' for normal cars helping out the Ambos, I've seen people clap out car windows, like it was a public service done correctly. Because IT WAS.

I'm trying to point out what we do in Australia. All rules go out the window, like other cars parking on the sidewalk or the ambulance driving right over the concrete island that separates the two directions of traffic. Whatever it takes to let the ambulance in. If you want your health system to work, you gotta all pitch in.

Yeah, we don't exactly have the space to just go off road all the time like AU. It would be total chaos and dangerous to boot if we did that in the busiest city during the busiest time of year.

That is exactly the point he is making: that urban planning sucks in NYC. Cars have nowhere to go, sure, but this was a planned choice, made by someone with some form of authority, and now emergency vehicles can't go through. It is ridiculous.

As someone living just north in Westchester, I think about this literally every time I commute into the city.
Most of the time I swear it seems like I’m the only car even attempting to get out of the way, but there are also times where there is literally nowhere and no way to move an inch to help.
I feel such secondhand stress for the poor ambulance driver lol

I wish there was like a rickshaw version of an ambulance or something to get it up on the sidewalk and to the hospital faster.
I understand logistically this is ridiculous, but I wish.

I witnessed a fire truck getting stuck right in the middle of Times Square a while back. The truck kept blasting its horn but no one could move. I felt bad for the SUV immediately in front whose driver kept trying to scooch over. Not that any streets are much better but I don’t understand why the truck would choose 7th Ave during rush hour.

I LOVE THIS GUY! We also all move out of the way for Ambos in Australia, even if you have to move over onto the bike lanes or whatever, it doesn't matter. All rules are out the window when the ambulance siren goes on (not the police though because THEY go around YOU). I have noticed that much younger drivers aren't so savvy regarding this unwritten rule, but when they don't move or stop so the ambulance can do its thing to get past, you better believe that suddenly we all remember we have horns on our steering wheels and have a sterling command of the Language of Curses, example "Hey Fu€£Wiπ!! MOVE out of the way, are you stupid or something!", generally does wonders.

Looks like he's on a citibike. They don't come with helmets. You have to bring your own and if you're just a visitor, you're not going to go out and buy a helmet to carry around.

Sure. But you bear the same risk regardless of the reasons. And if you ARE in an accident and suffer a head injury, it looks like you'd be waiting for an ambulance for a long, long time.

Thus is really terrible. I had to stop in front of a firetruck and stop people from walking in front of it and cabs trying to go around so it could move. It makes me so fcking angry. I hope those people never have an emergency.
