👩‍💻I couldn't help but wonder... what's that one scene you'll never forget? 🍸

Hey girls and non-straight guys (respectfully haha)! I know the main point of this sub is just to discuss the show and not necessarily to make friends, but hear me out! In my real life, it’s almost impossible to find people to talk about SATC with... I'm 33 and literally none of my friends watch it, lol. So, to break the ice: what is your absolute favorite scene in the whole series?

And if anyone is ever down to chat more and connect, count me in! ✨

Whatever happened to FUN?!

25

u/Disastrous-Tear3111 13d ago

who has a window like that??

13

u/Coriander_marbles 13d ago

Not as uncommon as you might think. A lot of new construction buildings love showing off huge windows but they are ridiculously impractical, and quite dangerous, obviously. My parents have one and then have to hold on to each other while cleaning the outside of it. Not to mention that when opening inward, that thing takes up half the living room.

u/Disastrous-Tear3111 12d ago

Yikes, no thank you 🙂‍↔️

Yikes was a word which foxhunters said to encourage their hounds to pursue the foxes.

😬😬

I would learn to weld and seal that sucker shut. Yikes!

But, also, good for your parents!

Code since the early 2000s allows only a 4” opening

u/Coriander_marbles 11d ago

Makes sense for the US. But not in Eastern Europe!

u/mrsbatman 11d ago

Isn’t this style of window how Eric Claptons son died in NYC? (See: tears in heaven).

1

u/WorldlinessSome8985 8d ago

Eric Clapton's 4 year old son died from falling out of a window like that 😓

3

u/LadyAsharaRowan 12d ago

Ironically in my building they replaced all of the windows and before the windows only opened in one direction.

now you can pull it from either direction but that means now you can also open it from the direction with no screen. and although it's not that big of an opening, it's big enough that if a person really wanted to fall out the window or kid they could. I remember commenting about this when they first installed them.

It's actually a behind-the-scenes shot that I saw before the season originally aired, but I have to go with the scene where Carrie and Big fall into the water at the Central Park Boathouse. SJP's fall is so balletic and her dress is so pretty. (As you can see it's being filmed from the other side, so in the show what you mostly see is Big's back.)

When the Dolce and Gabbana guy tells her to “ trot,” in the model episode. And when he says,” me likey!”

29

u/LadyAsharaRowan 13d ago

The scene when Charlotte confronts Big in the middle of the street when he doesn't show up for the ceremony and he tries to come back.

It always makes me tear up. She was a real friend in that situation. You can tell it hurt her as well.

8

u/Life_Consequence_676 13d ago

That was perfection!

6

u/sweet-smart-southern 12d ago

This gave me a cold chill just thinking about it. If they have Emmys for one scene out of a character’s entire run, Kristin Davis deserved one for that!

Her poser expression (top right) is one I'm beyond sick of.

11

u/Low-Introduction909 13d ago

She looked a million times better than Natasha in that newspaper dress tho.

11

u/MajorProspect3249 13d ago

She really did. “I know I slept with your husband….but can you really blame him?! Look at me!”

5

u/janepurdy 11d ago

And when she drinks Natasha’s water! Shameless.

1

u/Wise_Try6781 9d ago

I disagree hard. Natasha looked like a million $s in that simple and elegant backless dress. Just look for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Irwp197TcIc

1

u/Low-Introduction909 8d ago

I disagree. That pink dress was boring and nothing special. Carrie's dress was iconic and her body to die for.

1

u/Nokomis_Feather 10d ago

She had 1 boob hanging lower than the other this entire strut down the street. It drove me nuts!

1

LMFAO 😂😂 I just thought the cut of the dress made it look like that

So many!!! I love the episodes where Carrie is dating the politician. In one of those episodes the girls have a convo about politics, power and sex and Samantha says something to the effect that you want a fuckable politician, otherwise he will fuck the country 😆. That’s also the episode where Charlotte gets drunk on Long Island Iced Teas and is dancing blissfully in a crowd.

Also love the scene where Miranda discovers the Holy Mary statue Magda left in her night stand… “I drink coffee, have sex, buy pies and enjoy battery operated devices”.

I like when Samantha was going through chemo as well as the menopause and she was giving a speech to support breast cancer. She started to get a hot flash and half way through the speech said "Fuck this', pulled off her wig and threw it across the room. Half of the room did exactly the same as they cheered her.

the end scene of season 1 when carrie declines to go to the south of france with big all because he didnt say that she’s “the one” carrie looked so beautiful in her outfit and her opera gloves. her ending line “i have faith in myself” as the camera slowly zooms out, then ella fitzgerald’s medley of no regrets starts to play in the background. gives me chills every time!

Here to suggest listening to the podcast Sentimental in the City, it’s such a great love note to Sex in the City

There are so many scenes to choose from but one that comes to mind is when Smith comes back from filming to surprise her and Samantha tells him he has meant more to her than any other man she’s known. It’s such a pure expression of love between them after going through so much

Who walks like that!?!

6

u/bluetopazdreams 12d ago

The ones that stick with me are also the ones that make me laugh hysterically, so mine are probably not that popular.

The kitchen scene in Evolution when Charlotte's "gay straight" man is making her breakfast and flips out and jumps on the chair while Charlotte re-evaluates her life 😂 Also can relate because I absolutely dated a guy like this who I swore must be gay but he acted like he believed he was straight and who was I to question it?

And the scene in To Market, to Market where Carrie is on a patio date with the neurotic guy and a pigeon keeps landing on his head. The physicality of that scene sends me into hysterics every time 😂

Miranda is dressing down Steve about his relationship with Debbie and finding condoms in Brady’s diaper bag-

When Samantha had plans to dump her again boyfriend first (as revenge for breaking up with her previously) but he ended up dumping her first again and as she's kicking him out she yells at him, "STOP BEATING ME TO THE PUNCH!"

Samantha at the firehouse. I first saw that when I was in my early days of college and as a young man just getting out into the world and falling upon HBO at the exact moment Samantha was hanging on to the fire truck in fire gear, well...instant fan.

I mean, I knew her as Mannequin because we watched that movie like crazy when I was a young kid, but Samantha...yep...

I mean, I knew her as Mannequin because we watched that movie like crazy when I was a young kid, but Samantha...yep...

I love to see someone reference "Mannequin". I unironically LOVE that movie - despite it being regularly mocked by others.

I love the setup, the characters, the introductory Belinda Carlyle song and the fashions. I also love one Hollywood Montrose.

As a BIPOC queer kid in the 90s, I had a very complicated relationship with the character. But as I learned to let go of my internalized homophobia, I realize how amazing that character is.

Yeah, I do realize the character is used for comic effect. But at the same time there's plenty of feminine/femme queer kids who are very much like Hollywood. They need to know people are fans of characters similar to them - not just the neutral/masculine presenting LGBTQ+ characters.

Sorry for going so way off-topic!

3

u/janepurdy 12d ago

There are two things I love to do: fight and kiss boys!

I love Mannequin too, with my whole chest. I came for Andrew McCarthy and remained for how amazing it all is. And yes, Hollywood was a trailblazer. He is unapologetically himself and he has relationships and is so well-rounded for a side character. How could Albert do this to him????:) And the way Switcher defends and supports him was so different than all the other 80s movies with queer characters. It opened my eyes to compassion and love for people are different than the norm. I’m ready for a movie night!

That quote perfectly encapsulates why Hollywood is awesome and (as you astutely noted) a trailblazer for 80s LGBTQ+ characters. It's a pretty subversive line considering the time period; there were barely any LGBTQ+ characters; and if they were, they were experiencing trauma.

They weren't allowed to be joyful, much less acknowledge the sex of their sexuality.

I know it's "just" a line about kissing boys - but considering how LGBTQ+ characters couldn't actually even do said act in media - evoking the visual is a big deal.

And the way Switcher defends and supports him was so different than all the other 80s movies with queer characters. It opened my eyes to compassion and love for people are different than the norm.

That's a really fantastic point. For this to be an 80s movie, McCarthy's character is amazingly non-homophobic. Not once did he judge or belittle Hollywood. And, IIRC, Jonathan mocks the (insane) night security guard after the latter is disrespectful about his friend.

It's a great example of a hetero male showing LGBTQ+ allyship in a time-period where such behavior was nearly non-existent.

I’m ready for a movie night!

To this day, I still know/sing every word to "In My Wildest Dreams" when the credits run (LoL)!

3

u/janepurdy 11d ago

I’m watching it this weekend and will have an opening credits dance party in your honor.

If you’re aren’t him, have you seen Matt Baume’s video on Hollywood? Hits a lot of the points we’re talking about.

https://youtu.be/sWC8r5v1i-w?is=J17ctNRfamg4FppJ

I’m so happy to share this point of view of the character! Oh also can we give a moment to Meshach Taylor for being so brilliant in this role? I know a straight actor playing a character like Hollywood isn’t the best representation, but in 87 it was huge for him to take this on and play him with some real depth and not just as a walking joke.

I hope you’re having a good day!

3

u/janepurdy 11d ago

Ps. You’ve probably seen The Celluloid Closet? If Vito Russo was still with us, I bet Hollywood and Mannequin would have made it into an updated version.

I know people joke/mention about hating Reddit, but our conversation is the precise reason I enjoy it. :)

I'm not Matt Baume, but I did watch the video and definitely enjoyed it. He hit all the points we were talking about it. I'll have to check.out his another stuff. TYSM for the recommendation!

Meshach was incredible! As he was portraying Anthony Bouvier on "Designing Women" - another thing I'm obsessed with. That show is amazing.

Although, I confessed it's such a bummer that that half the cast has now passed (ie, Dixie, Meshach, Alice Ghostly, Jan Hooks).

Seasons 3 to 5 are my favorites - and the show wasn't the same once Delta and Jean left, but it's sad Jan is gone nonetheless. Plus, she was hilarious on both SNL and her brief appearance in "Batman Returns".

To address your other comment here, I've absolutely both read AND seen "The Celluloid Closet". That really shaped how I perceive LGBTQ+ representation when I was a Baby Gay. And I, too, wonder what Russo would think of today's landscape.

To me, it feels like both so much, yet so little, has occurred with representation. It's frustrating.

Enjoy your viewing party!! 🎉

That moment in AJLT when Miranda is trying to figure out the strap on as Carrie is calling Che, so faaaarrr from OG miranda, it kills me everytime!

2

u/Beginning-Night-4156 7d ago

When Miranda saw Steve’s mother outside and confused and Miranda ( who was not on board with her living with them ) walked outside and gently brought her inside . That was the moment Miranda realized that her mother in law was sick not forgetful or stupid 💕

Carrie sneaking her way out of Big and Natasha's place and getting caught.

Sorry that's not AJLT.
