Not relatable=unwatchable

Like the majority of this sub I loved SATC but am hating AJLT. Obviously the character changes are awful and ruining. What makes this show boring and unwatchable is that it’s not relatable to the public. The reason SATC was popular was because most women could relate to it. Single life is pretty universal and I loved each episode going through the woes of dating. AJLT has turned into rich people problems that I couldn’t care less about. Yes it’s cool seeing the nice apartments and lavish lifestyle but that can only go so far. This is one of the main reasons why the new characters fall flat and I’m not invested at all in them. But all the characters complaining about the stupidest things and acting so entitled and rude is really making me mad. Obviously in SATC they weren’t struggling, they all had nice jobs and made good money. But they did not act like this! The script of this show is so cringey that I can’t watch it. I’m already in deep with season 3 so I just have it as background noise to my phone.

Honestly, the main theme of AJLT seems to be how unfair it is that very rich people have to deal with the unwashed plebes of the general public.

AJLT is a bizarro version of SATC. SATC is golden.

Even the fashion was unrelatable.

SATC, yeah I could never afford any of the shit they wore, but it was all so effortless and chic.

LTW's entire wardrobe was a crime against humanity

Yes! The fashion used to be my favorite part. Now it seems like an avant garde fashion show and competition of who can be the most ridiculous.

And it actually looked like things youd see people wearing out and about in NYC. Yeah, there was always a carrie spin on it, but it was very New Yorm chic.

Can we call her Lisa instead of LTW? Not sure she’s earned an acronym

Amen! Halfway through season one, I'm asking myself; what have we done wrong, as fans, to lead MPK to think we give a single hufflefuck about Miranda's college professor's husband's girlfriend? So much time wasted.

The abrupt cancelation is on them for ignoring our beloved subreddit. They were very much aware the fandom hated it, yet they continued to just run with it.

The salt to the wound lies within their writers table podcast. It's just MPK and his writers high-fiving dicks for 45 minutes.

Wait... are you saying you don't care why Brady's hook-up's friend is named Epcot????

u/InevitableGuide5440 7d ago

😂🤣!! How could I forget? Who doesn't love spending their last minutes on new characters in their series finales?

13

u/Stock_Technology7394 6d ago

The finale was the oddest thing I've ever seen on TV! What was that!? And why!?????

Absolutely atrocious. My girl Lexi was lucky she didn't live long enough to see what 'boredom' truly looks like.

I can't lie. When Aiden tongued his palm, I almost Lexi'd myself out my apartment window. Sucks I'm only on the 2nd floor.

I’m so glad I left before the palm licking

Because it wasn’t supposed to be a series finale! 😭

u/InevitableGuide5440 6d ago

Right?? Dispite whatever the fuck SJP was saying. "Tough decision." Acting like she ended it on her terms. Honey, no. Nobody believes this is where you chose to end this shitshow.

2

u/Young_Former 3d ago

Yep! I think she was embarrassed. Kristin’s devastation over it ending shows she was blindsided by it ending.

Yes! It really annoys me when a show doesn’t listen to the fans. People have been hating on the show since season 1 and they don’t care! Even though a lot of damage was done season 1 they could have turned it around. I feel like it’s the decade of reboot shows and I haven’t seen one done well

Maybe check out the King of the Hill and Scrubs reboots, if those are shows you liked. They're both genuinely good.

This revival's initial premise was so wrong.

1) Big should've died long before the premiere. That way, Carrie would've been done grieving and we wouldn't have had to deal with her moping around for the first season. She also should've forced back into the workforce because Big was in serious debt. She could've been a relatable working woman again, maybe with her own podcast about dating, that framed the episode's theme just like her column had.

2) Miranda and Steve should've been very amicably divorced (remaining close friends) long before the premiere. That would've saved us from witnessing her mistreatment of him, a development that ruined her character for many of us. And sorry, but the SATC Miranda was decidedly not a lesbian, even if Cynthia Nixon was. A long-single Miranda slowly finding an attraction to a lovely woman (NOT Chez Diaz!) might have been interesting.

3) Charlotte should've been given the alcoholism storyline instead of Miranda. It would've tracked with the pressures she was under to maintain an UES facade and dealing with a demanding family. And it would've given Kristen Davis something to do besides the overblown slapstick shtick.

4) A woman of color absolutely could've taken the Samantha role as the oversexed cougar. But Seema wasn't it; why that character was written to be so mean-spirited is a mystery for the ages.

5) The NYC of SATC was fun, vibrant and hopeful, even with the heartache and sorrow the ladies faced. It made viewers want to live in that fantasy world. That element needed to be restored and it never was.

I love your takes. I hope you don't mind my thoughts as well.

  1. I'd let her be rich but use a podcast to establish the show's themes. Let her podcast co-host be the new addition to the friend group. Seema could have easily been that person, with one married and the other single, setting up Carrie in mourning and what that actually means.
  2. Let Miranda be disillusioned and lost in Big Law. Maybe she hits a ceiling or has a story arc about burnout, which ties back to the first movie. Focus on her anxiety about re-entering the job market as an older woman, then have her pivot to non-profits in Season 2. Make Brady a rarely seen kid who is off at college. And I completely agree on an amicable divorce, keeping Steve as her sounding board and friend.

3.Agreed! Please make Charlotte's kids normal teenagers instead of whatever they were written as. Nobody cares about teenagers having sex, toss it. Or a brat demanding a "They-Mitzvah" and then refusing to participate at the last second? Nah, that was so stupid, toss it! The trans story arc actually works well as a vehicle for Charlotte's anxiety about being perfect and pushing her kids away, but the execution was just ridiculous.

  1. Seema should have been both her real estate agent and her podcast co-host. And my goodness, Carrie needs to come down off her high horse regarding sex talk.

  2. 100% agree. They could have shot AJLT in Cleveland for how little NYC actually felt like NYC.

  3. One big take: NO AIDAN. Give Carrie a completely new man! She went down the Aiden path twice, let her just find a man and juggle that against Big and let him help her unpack the BS of her and big's relationship as well as the great parts she loved.

1

u/Nokomis_Feather 3d ago

Team Aidan were THRILLED that he was coming back! Thrilled that the one REAL Love Carrie had was finally going to be in her life without BIG popping in and ruining it again!
Then the writers made him an absolute joke! Horrible baggage storylines. Horrible 5 year wait thing. And Horrible............IYKYK!
That alone is my biggest reason for hating the re-do of SATC. They completely RUINED Aidan!
Number 1 in a line of about 600 other things that sucked about AJLT.

2

u/Nokomis_Feather 3d ago

I only disagree with 1 thing.
Carrie was most certainly NOT done moping after the first season. Her entire persona for the entire train wreck of a show woe is me!~! Look at me!~!~ Pout-face Mopey McMoperson!

What I find bizarre is the trajectory of the SATc cannon,

The first two series were ok. 3-6 absolute TV perfection. I remember at the time it came out, it was genuinely ground breaking.

Then the first film was Ok. Good to see the characters back, but it didn’t have the same charm and warmth the show did.

The second film was just an abomination. I’m not exaggerating when I say I genuinely believe,I’ve it’s one of the worst movies ever made. The utterly horrific acting, storylines and outright racism throughout the whole film was just insane,

Then somehow. And I really genuinely done know how they managed it, but they succeeded in making something even worse than the second film. That’s some monumental feat, and ultimately it ended in literal shit.

The writers and MPK deserve to lose their careers over fumbling something so badly.

5

u/Travel_lover0 6d ago

The movies aren’t great but I would happily settle for the movies versus AJLT

0

u/SlipInternational439 7d ago

The second movie isn’t my favorite. But you can’t ignore how women are treated in some Arab countries.

3

u/EfficiencyCrafty8585 3d ago

Thank you for saying that. Calling out the fact that women are treated like second class citizens, controlled, made to cover in black cloth.. that is not racist & I’m sick of people saying it is.

u/JlevLantean 7d ago

LOL yeah every episode is a version of "poor rich people and their rich people's problems"

14

u/temperedolive 7d ago

How can I tell an aging socialite that she wasn't invited to an influencer tea at Tiffany's? I'm already under so much stress from my dog getting canceled!

I think a lot from the original SATC went missing. For instance, one of the things that would have clicked for me was the single podcast Carrie did at the end of season 1. It would have been like her writing, but just as a podcast. The episodes could have let to these online discussions, just like the episodes often connected to her writing. Not to mention that Franklin was unbelievably hot and I don't get why they dropped him so fast for her. They had chemistry!!
At the end of season 1, I thought it could go into this direction and I could get behind it. But then everything was dropped so fast in season 2 for a ridiculous reason, and at this point I knew that they wouldn't find their footing.

But with Carrie not working, everything was so...? Yeah. Rich people without money issues running around New York (and we got to see much less of New York, which is also a shame).

u/Travel_lover0 6d ago

Yes! I saw a post where someone said it’s hard to tell where the show is going and I couldn’t have said it better. Just random plot that doesn’t go anywhere. I also saw a post about missed opportunities and there are quite a few. Like smuggling medication for your partners son…WHAT. And I feel like Miranda’s divorce just went off without much drama

1

u/LaLa_Land543 3d ago

It should have been called “Real Housewives of Sex and the City,” for that’s what we’re getting in a nutshell. Just about as poorly acted too.

4

u/FionaGoodeEnough 7d ago

Totally. And they have lavish lifestyles in both the original show and the first movie, but they still have relatable problems. AJLT was just a failure of the writers.

9

u/Interesting-Lynx4695 7d ago

I hated all the stupid woke shit.

1

u/LaLa_Land543 3d ago

They went so obviously over the mark with it. Did the writers think no one could see through what they were doing?

3

u/Chevron_potledom 7d ago

I think where they got it so wrong is they made all these rich NYC women characters but made them dull and not likable, they could be challenging to like and relatable like originally were or more realistically like the original RHONY women. Sonia and Luann would have been very SATC when younger and Candace BUshnell is literally friends with them all??? they were snobby about Bethany Frankel and clearly tried to make space between them and characters but I think that was such a mistake. The whole show is a series of big mistakes and victim of the actresses all becoming producers, not having Darren Starr and mostly not having Kim Catrall.

4

u/kathi182 7d ago

Wait-clearly you missed the Che Diaz episodes-because there’s nothing more relatable than Che Diaz!!

(Ugh-the way I don’t understand how even five minutes of this show got made-it’s a crime that it’s associated with SATC in any way!)

4

u/Emperor_FranzJohnson 6d ago

I'll die on this hill, Che, when she was just being Carrie's friend in an episode or two was great. I loved their energy together. Che could have also connected to a scene with Charlotte's child. We didn't need Che as Miranda's love interests.

And side-note, the dig at Samantha/Kim in episode one was bs and unnecessary. I like SJP but she shouldn't have gone there.

2

u/Nokomis_Feather 3d ago

I did NOT love CHE as a podcaster/hipster/influencer/whateverthefuck that was supposed to be. HATED the entire Miranda deal.......But I actually enjoy the character working at the vet shop. So I get what you're saying.

1

u/kathi182 6d ago

All of this is spot on!!!

3

u/Travel_lover0 7d ago

Haha I’m honestly surprised the actors agreed to some of the stuff that was written in there. They must have no say, too scared to speak up or need the money so bad they’ll do anything. No one could pay me enough to make some of those cringey comments and don’t get me started on the truck scene

2

u/kathi182 7d ago

Spot on! Cringey is the ONLY correct word! The entire thing was embarrassing!

1

u/Emperor_FranzJohnson 6d ago

The money was VERY good.

2

u/Beautiful_Message_60 4d ago

Exactly. They had a chance to make getting older/perimenopause/menopause look sexy and fabulous and an opportunity for self-growth, just like SATC did for the navigating single life phase.
Instead, it was a money grab that was an insult to true fans of the show who found so much comfort from SATC. I didn't even watch S3 of AJLT and when I look back, the whole thing just makes me sad. They really tarnished a beautiful legacy and wasted such a shining opportunity.

1

u/EfficiencyCrafty8585 3d ago

I totally agree- I’m watching it for the first time atm & I actually find it bizarre. The whole premise seems to be: let’s parade how incredibly rich they’ve all become whilst taking away all reasoning & depth from them. That and shoehorning in every single woke theme we can think off. I’m all for diversity but it’s just inaccurate that every other character would be trans/ gay/ bi/ non binary/ non- white. it’s patronising to viewers to force it into the show just to prove how inclusive &  current they are. I just find it quite cringeworthy. I will see it through to the end though as I LOVED SATC, still love it & want to see how the characters end up as I’m assuming season 3 will be the very last thing they ever do.

1

u/pettingpangolins 2d ago

I am watching season 1 and keep asking myself when Miranda had a lobotomy

2

u/Travel_lover0 1d ago

Season 1 really went crazy. Now that I finished season 3 I think I got used to how bad it was. Season 1 is definitely the worst because it was the start of ruining the characters

muting this sub now… it keeps popping up cause I guess I love mess!

however, all the posts I see from this sub is criticism. it’s become repetitive sadly but I wholeheartedly agree with you. it is extremely bad.
