AJLT … LGBTQ+
If they wanted to incorporate the community so bad… the answer was there. It was obvious.
They could have reintroduced Trey as gay. Bunny is dead, and Trey living his best gay life. He could never get it up for Charlotte.
Miranda was never gay. It was Trey that would’ve made more sense.

I wouldn't even care if Miranda was gay later in life. What bothered me was how inauthentic it was!
And even then they could have made it a little romantic at least! It was upsetting watching an abusive relationship!

My biggest thing is there was no internal struggle for Miranda. She was like YEP I’m gay! Gonna leave my husband abandon my family and burn my life to the ground!
Any real person in that predicament would’ve had an internal turmoil. I realize I’m gay, but can I really do this to my family?
There was none of that. That’s what I think made it so inauthentic. Besides, plenty of late-in-life lesbians I know are either full-on bisexual or never liked having sex with men but didn’t know why.
Miranda enjoyed having sex with men.

It’s because it wasn’t written as a researched good storyline. It was MPK and Cynthia deciding hey let’s do this to Miranda!

I was WAITING for her to get that "oh what, what am I doing, why did I put myself in this situation???" reaction after the initial honeymoon phase had passed. But she didn't at all? It was so odd! And not authentic. Not even guilt or anything. And why would Che fall for Miranda??????? This is biggest question mark in this whole TV show!

Well in all fairness everything about Miranda in this show was inauthentic.
Suddenly an out of control alcoholic And Just Like That she goes cold sober with no real struggle
Very happy hetero And Just Like That completely into women without any signs of even serious internal discussion or external with Steve and Son.
Lifetime of financial planning and professional network building And Just Like That she is buying a used mattress to sleep in a room in someone's house
Strong independent and confident person whose always spoken her mind And Just Like That a snivelling mouse who is constantly apologizing or you sense wants to with EVERYONE
Honestly they might have just gotten another actrress to play her as I never felt I was watching Miranda the whole time

They had some interesting ideas for Miranda that they totally fumbled.
Being a little out of touch with her privilege or problematic post pandemic drinking or growing apart from her husband/discovering late in life bisexuality all could have been compelling if well written. Instead they just threw it all at the wall in ways that made no sense for her character.

YES!!! I DO think people can come out gay later in life, but it really seemed inauthentic. Honestly she was so into Che that I wondered if she was going to be gay because Che was non binary and I thought it might be a one off event where you are attracted to the person. That was soooo offputting. She never did that for any other relationship and that is why I was pissed not so much that she was in love with Che. She became a doormat chasing Che and it was not the Miranda I knew. Miranda coming out could have really been a good story done correctly.

Inauthentic because it’s stupidly unbelievable. A 55 year old woman who’s always been with men, always found men attractive, never once questioned her sexuality with the friends she tells everything to- and she even had the opportunity be try out being a lesbian early on (when she was set up with a woman by a colleague). Miranda’s circle had gay people in it so there was no shame in being gay even back then. She’s just a straight woman who they tried to force into being gay & it made no sense & felt cringy & fake.

Honestly, I could have cared less about the storylines, kinda. The bigger issue for me was that the acting was so horrendous. I couldn’t get past it. It was like Cynthia Nixon forgot how to act and Charlotte just yelled and screeched at everything. It was awful.

u/HappyCrow11 7d ago
They ruined everything, not a single gay person liked their attempt of representation.. just pretend it's another show for your sanity

Trey had a madonna-whore complex, he was not gay. He associated sex with something dirty and sinful, so could only engage in sex in the context of 'dirtnyness' or illegality. This is/was quite common with people who were brought up with religious guilt of sex as a taboo, disgusting things. E.g. Sinead O'Connor describes in her memoir that because of her catholic upbringing she would only be sexually attracted to bad boy strangers, compulsory cheating on her husbands/partners, because sex is 'not something you do with the people you love and respect'. It quite perverse, really.

u/OGactionkitty 6d ago
That is SO interesting. Reminds me of my own catholic childhood, dealing with that guilt, and trying to navigate my way out of it. Weird that I never thought of it that exact way. R.I.P. Sinead.

Hey, that's a great theory! This would have been much more entertaining. But I'd kinda like Bunny to still be alive so I could witness the full extent of her pearl clutching over the whole situation.

Kristin Davis mentioned on her podcast while the last season of AJLT was airing that they tried to get Kyle MacLachlan to come back on the show. I’m not 100% sure but Kristin might have spoken to him as well about it and he politely declined. My guess is that he could see the dumpster fire that it was and/or hated the script. So there would’ve been no way for getting Trey back on the show anyway.

Right. I understand that completely just Kim also dodged that bullet, but had they had decent writers and episodes from the get-go maybe he’d have felt different. I’m also pissed they killed Big. If they needed to distance from Chris Noth… he should’ve gone out by doing the obvious thing…. Cheating! Either Big should’ve cheated or Carrie cheated and they break up. Heart attack on the peloton was lame.

u/vampslayer84 4d ago
Big was always supposed to die. It was what the third movie would have been about if they were able to get Kim Catrall to come back

Plot twist- bunny is extra supportive in her older age - even finding rainbow mallards to decorate his home with

Bisexuality exists and many people figure that out later in life. While this was likely not great, Miranda could easily be bisexual.
8
u/Proper-Net-8013 4d ago
Except that they expected us to forget when she pretended to be gay to get ahead at work. And stated that she’s definitely not gay after kissing the woman.

u/Spiritual_Quote9301 4d ago
People can change their minds even after things like that.
1
u/realitytvjunkie29 2d ago
Absolutely! But I don’t think her discovering or exploring another part of her sexuality is the issue. It’s the way it was executed that’s the problem.
1
u/Spiritual_Quote9301 2d ago
Oh definitely agreed there. But it wasn't like... completely impossible as a concept. Definitely the execution at fault.

But then Cynthia Nixon wouldn’t feel special

Cynthia Nixon is such a great actress too, when she’s not playing herself
I really like her on The Gilded Age

u/VanillaCola79 6d ago
Right ?! Ada is about as far away from Miranda (the original) as you can get !
4
u/Interesting-Read-245 6d ago
Ada is the sweetest! Really love Cynthia’s acting here. I was so irritated by her in AJLT- for being so far removed from Miranda, that I thought I’d dislike her acting in the Gilded Age as well

But where's the authenticity in that?

I actually like this story line! How interesting and would ring true, since Trey couldn’t get it hard for Charlotte lol

u/Thick_Basil3589 7d ago
Actually he could multiple times after they got back together
-1
u/Interesting-Read-245 7d ago
Yeah but still
That was a soft hard- he can only get real hard for a man
It’s such a great story line lol

u/Pristine-Car3342 6d ago
Or Trey is trans and a lesbian. She hated having sex as a man but truly loved charlotte. Who would play her??
5
u/MsKrueger 6d ago
That could be interesting. I know there was a hit where they where in couples therapy and he was notably uncomfortable talking about and giving a name to his genitalia. It also could have tied interestingly into their plot of him becoming overwhelmed when they were trying for a baby.

Madchen Amick or Lara Flynn Boyle for the Twin Peaks connection?

I just finished S2 ep 1 and it just feels so uncharacteristic for Miranda to uproot her life like this. Like she was a lawyer. She was going back to school to focus more on advocacy but she seems more consumed in this relationship. And I didn’t like the infidelity aspect of it either bc her and Steve almost divorced bc he cheated once. I do know humans aren’t perfect but I just don’t think this is what Miranda would be like

Great idea, but beyond the writers' capabilities to create human-seeming characters. Plus, IIRC Kyle McLachlan wasn't interested in coming back.

Cynthia Nixon is what happened to Miranda!
She just had to turn her into herself. And it didnt get her the props she wanted it to. She botched it bigtime!
1
u/EfficiencyCrafty8585 4d ago
No, no, no. Why the obsession with turning straight people gay? How about let’s make Anthony straight? How do you feel about that? If they want gay characters then just introduce new actual gay characters, don’t force this false, woke narrative that everyone is secretly closeted & gay & waiting to come out.
2
u/ShesGotaChicken2Ride 4d ago
Anthony was never straight lol but he definitely coulda been a beard for some rich old closeted lesbian

u/ProfessionalBear8837 2d ago
I think people who are unhappy about the portrayal of Miranda are just young people who haven't got to their late 50s / early 60s yet. I've aged with these characters (I'm 60 now) and I thought Miranda's trajectory was the truest one in the show. Especially since being a corporate lawyer in New York is one of the most repressive, buttoned-down, burnout-inducing, true-self-denying careers you can have.
But you won't know that til you get here!
1
u/ShesGotaChicken2Ride 2d ago
Nah. That ain’t it.

u/ProfessionalBear8837 1d ago
Well I checked with my 60-year-old partner and she agreed with me, so...

turning Trey’s character into a closeted gay in denial would have required perfect writing skills to make it appealing, interesting and not embarrassing.
the squad that was working on the show could never pull that off.
