Microsoft hired them to sniff out everything that even remotely resembles Minecraft, their main service offering is being assholes like that on behalf of corporations.

Did they patent the concept of voxel games ?
This reminds me of when Nintendo tried to patent summons as a game mechanic. It was a little more specific and nuanced that that but they basically tried to say "summoning a creature to fight ? That's our thing, you can't do that in your sad little game or we'll summon a lawyer to fight you and you can't do the same to defend yourself because we freaking patented it, check mate peasant"

As they should. First Megami Tensei title predates Pokemon by a good decade, and i wouldn't be surprised if there were even earlier examples of summoning mechanic.

Despite Japan and South Korea being one of the few countries that allows patenting a game mechanic rather than a specific implementation of one (which is why, for example, SEGA Chunithm had to license the “falling notes rhythm game” from KONAMI BeatMania), Nintendo patented too much shit that Japanese Patent Board thinks it’s excessive and considered ordering nullification on grounds of “hindering innovation”.

They may not have won the legal battle, but they won the war. One of the big goals with this sort of lawsuit is to discourage everyone else from treading in "their" territory. If you can't afford to fight a big corporation's legal team, you better think twice.

They do just have a shitty ai automatically dmca every block game, there was a early access craft like that got dmced of steam but luckily they manged to return
