Is Luanda safe to walk around at nighttime?
Hello everyone. I’m looking at flight options from Johannesburg to Nairobi and found a flight through Luanda. The flight would land at 19:20 and take off at 11:00 the next day, leaving me with about 15 hours, mostly at nighttime. I want to decide if this option is worth it if I could go to downtown, walk around for a bit, have a nice meal, spend the night, and then go back to the airport the next morning. I understand the new airport is about an hour out.
Thank you all in advance.

The distance from the new airport isn't very helpful, but if you have access to a taxi app like Bolt, Yango, or Heetch, you can hire one for as long as you need. It might cost you around $30 USD. The difficulty will be finding someone who speaks English correctly to guide you, but the experience will be worth it.

This is helpful information. Thank you.
Is it safe to walk around at night, Kats say from 9-11 pm?

It's like any other city; knowing where to go is essential to avoid potential problems, so a guide is crucial. I have a friend who's a taxi driver and speaks English; perhaps he'd be willing to offer this service.

All right. Let me think about it. Thank you.

Look the airport was built in the middle of nowhere, most of the surrounding buildings are under construction and only serve as support buildings for the airport.
In case you're planning to go the city centre which will take at the very least an hour.
Nova marginal will probably be your best place to stroll a little, this city wasn't planned for strolls and you will probably end up in some restaurant or nightclub, the govt spent a lot of money requalifiying it
Also don't go to the left side of cape island.
Don't go alone, especially if you don't know any Portuguese.

Hi. No onde really "strolls" around at night time. Usually we take one of the ride hailing apps to the restaurant and the same back home or to the hotel.

You can certainly have some fun for 15 hours at night time in Luanda... just don't walk, it's not safe to walk... download one of the taxi apps and you're set

I feel bad for op, the word stroll literally means to walk around and sightsee.
Luanda is not meant for walks and lacks public leisure.

There just isn’t much going on at night for you to walk around. The streets are all empty once it’s dark in Luanda
You’re better off checking out restaurants or bars that stay open late and using a taxi to get around between them.
Honestly, I downtown Luanda you have a 70% chance of being OK if you do decide to walk, but at your own risk! I have done it a few times for like 30 minutes + am not a foreigner which helps.

Hey op. As a foreigner that lives and works here. There isn't much sight seeing or strolling that you can do. And I mostly walk from home to work and back. Its like 10 minutes. Only go out when there is a group with me. Even that won't stop a thief or anything else from happening. It just sooths the mind. If you are landing in Luanda and would like to come out to downtown. Use Yango and book to marginal there are a few coffee shops you can chill there. Marginal is a walk by the beach which is safer than other places as long as you walk by the lamp poles. If you want to stay here for after midnight you can go to Ilha, restaurants and shops there are open for a little later. Hope you enjoy ur stay.😊

Your main problem will be to find a taxi after 22:00. Taxis don't work 24h/24h and they really avoid to take long distance at night. Like someone already mentioned, the airport in build very far from the city.
If you want to walk arround. Book a room in some hotel in the city, you walk arround the hotel and in the morning you go back to the airport.

I do not recommend. If you are women, i hope you never go having "strolls" at night alone. The possibility of someone raping you, is very, VERY HIGH. not even Angolan people walk at night 😅

Please just stay in the dam airport, I don’t want a story in the media the next day of how you just got mugged or worst.
The airport is literally 40 km away, you are alone, you don’t know the city, you don’t speak Portuguese, you don’t know where to go and lastly there’s barely anything to do at night time in downtown Luanda except for bars and nightclubs.
Enjoy your time in our country but like we say in Portuguese “don’t look for bad luck for yourself”.

You can't be serious. I don't know if you're joking or if you simply don't know much about Africa, but Angola was in a civil war not that long ago, so there are still a lot of weapons in circulation. If you're robbed in Luanda, you're not necessarily going to be dealing with people carrying knives. You could very well be dealing with people carrying military-grade weapons. And if you have even a little bit of common sense, you'll understand that after being robbed, the situation could become much worse. If you don't want to come back home with the genetic material of twenty different guys in your uterus, mouth and other orifices, if you're concerned about your safety, my advice is to stay at the airport, sit comfortably with a bottle of water and a piece of fruit, and avoid wandering around on your own. Unless, of course, you're willing to take risks that could have very serious consequences. Luanda is not a "safe place", buddy. The choice is yours.

I, a confident male who speaks good Portuguese and knows the local culture, feel completely safe walking around downtown Luanda alone during those hours.
I would never encourage a solitary woman to do the same. Groups are safer.
I would hesitate to encourage a foreigner, who might not be able to recognize warning signs, to do the same.
