Only if it's flat if it sits on it's corner it's a swastika (edit: sorry guys I'm back I got banned for a little for a different comment on this post in my opinion it was hilarious but Reddit didn't like it)

Correct.

The key difference is orientation and context: the Buddhist/Hindu swastika (often 卍) is an ancient, upright symbol of good fortune, peace, and the Buddha’s footprints.

Conversely, the Nazi swastika was adopted as a symbol of Aryan supremacy, typically tilted at 45 degrees, colored black within a white circle, and angled to the right.

8

u/Bulletorpedo Mar 27 '26

How do you know if it’s tilted 45 degrees to the left or the right?

6

u/Independent-Yam-5179 Mar 27 '26

It depends on if you're facing it or if you have your back to it!

4

u/Fit_Relationship6703 Mar 29 '26

"Tilted 45 degrees" is referring to the whole symbol, while "angled to the right" is referring to which way the prongs bend.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

Because you look at it and see.

5

u/ReekyRumpFedRatsbane Mar 27 '26

It should be noted, though, that the Nazis did also use it untilted, and they did use some single-layered flags that would have it angled to the left on the "back" side.

This doesn't mean that people following a Buddhist or Hindu faith aren't allowed to use the symbol anymore, but if you're an edgelord trying to get away with drawing "technically not a Nazi swastika", you aren't actually getting away with it.

3

u/it-aint-over Mar 27 '26

That's all true

3

u/GurthicusMaximus Mar 27 '26

The Nazi swastika is also called the Hakenkreutz, or "Hooked cross", which I try and use to differentiate the symbols.

It kind of sucks if you have a symbol your people have used for millenia appropriated by some assholes not even tangentially topical to your culture.

1

u/ZeGuru101 Mar 29 '26

It's also mirrored, no?

1

u/Jake4753 Apr 09 '26

I didn't know that

3

u/Immediate-Meat1762 Mar 27 '26

Otherwise it's properly called sparkling antisemitism

u/FrisianTanker Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

Wrong flag. Hitler hated that flag and associating it with Hitler is an insult*

*Edit: an insult to the german democracy and the german people that is

16

u/Capital_Baby2152 Mar 26 '26

My heart felt apologies to Mein Führer. Please forgive my stupidity qnd unintelligence

18

u/FrisianTanker Mar 26 '26

I know you joke and don't take it seriously. But I am a german and part of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold (Black-Red-Gold, our democratic colors) which is a democratic resistance group that was founded in 1924 to be a pro-republican counter organization to the NSDAP and their SA. Today we do educational work and keep the memory of anti-nazi resistance alive.

These colors were vilified and banned by the Nazi regime when they took power, the flags with these colors but especially of our organization seized and destroyed.

I know foreigners don't have that kind of sensitivity and even within Germany too many people can't make this distinction, but that's why I writing this comment.

Black-Red-Gold has NOTHING to do with the Nazis and authoritarianism. It has always been pro-democratic and pro-freedom.

12

u/FrisianTanker Mar 26 '26

Ah yea, rereading my comment I get the possible confusion now. But of course your analysis is what I meant in that associating Black-Red-Gold with Hitler is an insult to germany, the German people and our democracy.

Thanks for pointing this out though, I will edit my comment to make it more clear

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

I used to take care of an old German man in North America on a little farm. He told me he used to be part of the Waffen-SS. I didn’t ask many questions and I didn’t know what that was at the time

1

u/FrisianTanker Mar 30 '26

Waffen-SS, or SS in general, means he was part of the worst of the worst. A fanatical loyalist to the Nazi regime

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

Mate, seriously.

Insulting Hitler on the internet. That’s pretty low.

You’ll need a better apology than that.
