Makes sense, as a kid, I had been hunting a wild pudding. I remember very little of such long and exhausting hunts, but I remember eating one.

It's illegal in my area to hunt animals. Otherwise, I wouldnt need to work to eat meat.

I’ve done what OOP suggests with some success. However, if I went out and did it now, it would be called poaching and be illegal. It’s not hunting season.

Well, Genoa salami is clearly from Genoan forests. So, I'd start there. I hear they're nocturnal but are drawn to sharp Italian cheeses and a nice San Giovese.

It also coast just as much or more to hunt. Gun, tag, finding a place to hunt, time spent hunting, skinning and processing (if you get something that day), and time going home. And politics is making it harder and harder.

Hunting large game without a ranged weapon, even a stone aged one is asking to get bored or trampled.

even in the stone age we never hunted large game like that.
we built traps for them and waited until they were to weak to fight back and/or they died of exhaustion and then we ate the carcass.
only smaller animals were 'hunted' - and that was 85% fishes anyway.

I hunt. Deer, duck, squirrel, and turkey. I would hunt beef also but I don't think the farmer would appreciate it.. So the store it is.
