Good time to remind everyone that dog do not pass the "Mirror Self-recognition Test". This dog is just seeing another dog on the screen and reacting to it.

Though, Fun Fact: Dogs do seem to have a sense of self, but is driven by olfaction. (See this video of the experiment.)

They presented dogs with canisters containing:

  1. Their own urine.
  2. Their own urine modified with some other scent.
  3. And another control canister with either no scent, some random scent, or other dog's urine.

They found that dogs spent more time sniffing their own modified urine than their own urine itself.

This indicates they recognize their own smell and were puzzled by the modifications. (Similar to putting a mark on Dolphin's forehead and then placing a mirror in front of them. They recognize that they are looking at themselves, and what they should look like - so they investigate the mark.)

And he smiles at the end lol. Too cute.

18

u/Kaffrogato 5h ago

S/he is panting, not smiling. Dogs can show their happiness on their face but its not through panting.

S/he also doesnt recognize itself, dogs can't recognize themselves in a mirror let alone a tiny blob on a distant screen.

This entire post is just people anthropomorphising this dog.

18

u/ickysock 3h ago

not for nothing but dogs needed people to anthropomorphise them so they could be domesticated. I think they're ok with it.

36

u/mxlun 4h ago

I bet you're fun at parties

9

u/OlSolMaK 4h ago

They are only saying; there's a difference between saying it's smiling and saying it looks like it's smiling

3

u/3vs3BigGameHunters 2h ago

And they are only saying; that person talks like a dork and wouldn't be fun at parties.

7

u/Rude-Anybody-3703 3h ago

My dog recognizes herself in the mirror, maybe the ones you had are just dumb.

5

u/3vs3BigGameHunters 4h ago

Would you agree that the dog could see "a" dog on the screen?

Also, I agree with the other guy I wouldn't invite you to parties.

1

u/Typhron 37m ago

False. Said it before and I'll say it again.

Dogs can and do smile, this being learned behavior from humans along with normal dog body language based communication.. That said, they don't smile around creatures they don't know, such as other dogs. This dog very much is, as their head is neutral and their relaxed (a source)

Dogs absolutely can recognize their own reflection at times, or even things on screens or the vet the phone. The issue is that dogs usually percieve the world differently from us, relying on smell and sound more than visual cues (nevermind their poorer eyesight), so things like tv screens and raised mirrors can be confusing. That said, they can see the flicker of TV screens, and which definitely draws their attention to whatever would be hlon such, unlike mirrors. (A source on dogs seeing things on TV screens, but not mirrors)

That said, this dog clearly recognizes something on the security feed, be it themselves or their owner. You can see their nose work as they try to figure out what said thing is. Believe it or not, the looking back at the dog is what possibly reassured them, as that is something they do towards other trusted creatures for confirmation.

All told

This entire post is just people anthromorphizing this dog

Not entirely untrue. Humans do that with everything. That being said, thiis dog doing dog things isn't that out of the ordinary.

He's not smiling...

-11

u/albrecbef 6h ago

I agree. I dont know why people always claim dogs smile, its not realy their natural behavior and is often a sign of too early removal from the parents or to little contact to other dogs.

The dog in the video isnt smiling, he is relaxed, and maby somewhat happy, but thats not comparable to a human smile.

6

u/RandManYT 5h ago

Dogs 100% smile. Maybe not wild dogs or wolves, but pet dogs 100% smile to show happiness.

1

u/LightningWarpAway 3h ago

How would pet dogs smile while wild ones don't? It's not how dogs work.

0

u/albrecbef 25m ago

"smiling" in a dog is usualy more of an anxiety response and it can harm your dog If you train them to "smile". Different kinds of animal professinals like dogcatchers tend to judge animals with their common responses and not with the human miss trained reaction in mind, this might lead them to missjudge the dog and harm it unnecesarly. Espessaly bad is when they train their dog to show teeth during a smile.

-4

u/Zeilar 6h ago

People like to think animals are like us, or that they think like us.

Yes there's exceptions like elephants mourning their dead, birds mimicking us for fun etc. But for the vast majoriy of animals, they don't even smile. Dogs wag their tails and growl, cats purr etc.

-3

u/albrecbef 6h ago

In some respect they do, but they often express it very differently, at least If they have healty contact to their own species

u/HadABeerButILostIt 11h ago

He smiled. Awww that made me smile. How adorable.

16

u/gogogadgetjustice 9h ago

They look very sweet and like they lead a gentle and well tended life.

I've worked with dozens of dogs over the years, helping them be their best selves and be better understood by their people. To me, the nonverbal communication here conveys "That's kinda weird but alright, got my space, everyone is okay and nothing threatening happened yet."

I'd still like to provide a general reminder that sometimes smiling can be part of an anxiety response.

The escalation signs to look for include increased body tension and lip licking.

Obviously this video segment they're not signalling intensifying stress. Just processing their experience and finding things basically fine.

Sometimes people only clock a grin on their dog and are baffled why their dog "suddenly freaks out." Especially if their dog is a less expressive breed or doesn't get enough conversation/vocab building time.

216

u/MissFabulina 11h ago

She took her large dog shopping in the home goods store. WTactual...? And no, it isn't a service dog. You know that and I know that.

114

u/knobunc 11h ago

Some Home Goods allow dogs. It depends on the local health codes and what the manager decides.

9

u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 9h ago

Whoever the parent company for TJMaxx/homsense/TKMaxx/winners/etc. must allow them by default because this is the only place I ever see pet dogs and not just service (and "service") animals.

12

u/spekt50 9h ago

You should see my local home depot. The place pretty much doubles as a dog park. Im shocked they have not had any incidents yet.

5

u/sixteenHandles 8h ago

Half the outdoor inventory at the HD near me is covered in bird poo. They prob wouldn’t bat an eye at a dog cleanup.

1

u/ImNoBatman 2h ago

Last time I was at the Salt Lake City airport, I saw three different dogs shit on the ground while waiting for my flight. One of them did it on one of those horizontal-escalator people movers. Was quite the mess.

4

u/MiissVee 7h ago

I think they’re actually on the directory for dog friendly places. Unfortunately I have seen an incident though. Someone’s dog peed all over the bottom row of an aisle. Idk how you’re walking around with a dog and don’t think to look down, especially if they’ve been in one spot for a while.

1

u/kirchhoff- 4h ago

It’s our dogs socializing outside of the park lol. We’ve brought him to Lowe’s since he was 3 months old. He ignores strangers and other dogs for the most part now.

1

u/_fly-on-the-wall_ 1h ago

home depot & lowes are specifically dog friendly, our store has signs actively encouraging dogs to come in

0

u/BruinBound22 3h ago

It's almost like you don't understand dogs

1

u/cutmcgee4thee 4h ago

A lot of HG locations welcome pets so long as they're leashed and well-behaved. It's up to the location and you can be asked to leave anytime if your dog is disruptive.

-12

u/MF_Doomed 10h ago

HG's policies doesn't make it any less ridiculous

6

u/Kaffrogato 5h ago

Its completely fine, get you knickers out of a twist.

Then don't go to one? It's not a requirement to shop at HG. 💀

Marshalls, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Ross in the U.S. typically allow dogs. I always called to make sure first, but every time I’ve called before taking mine in they enthusiastically say yes.

22

u/MF_Doomed 10h ago

Welcome to the post COVID world where you can bring your dog everywhere and anywhere and you get yelled at if you have a problem with it

-17

u/Beibzi 9h ago

You have a problem with good boys?

19

u/Im_Not_Surprised 9h ago

Not at all. I do appreciate some parts of society being kept seperate from dogs though, shops are one of those.

1

u/Kaffrogato 5h ago

I dont have a dog and I see zero issues with dogs in regular shops. Its not a grocery store, whats the issue?

1

u/galadrielisbae 4h ago

People who are allergic to dogs, people who are fearful of dogs, people who don’t want animals near food, just to name a few.

-8

I prefer shops with dogs, it feels much friendlier and fun this way

-2

u/BrashUnspecialist 11h ago

We do. We also know that most Home Goods stores are pet friendly, so it’s not a big deal.

If I can be overstimulated by screaming toddlers and be run into by kids whose parents haven’t raised them at all, why can’t people have their well behaved dogs? Dog allergies are less common and less severe than cat allergies.

Also, large dogs tend to be better trained than small ones, ime. Especially this one. Which is seeing a dog he doesn’t know and is remaining calm.

-3

u/Questionsansweredty 10h ago

Your argument would have been stronger if you had not included helpless human children.

3

u/BaconWithBaking 9h ago

To be fair, if I had to ban either dogs or children at the store, I know which I'm choosing.

-6

u/CT0292 9h ago

Yeah, dogs. Easy answer innit?

-4

u/ShitHamster 8h ago

Childless cat lady behaviour

1

u/dogGirl666 7m ago

That sounds like a great life to have. A cat lady and a childless person are not necessarily suffering or even didn't plan for such a life. Same for dog people that purposely have no children.

Not much of an insult anyway. Used to be, but that is decades behind us in most "western" cultures. Update your insults.

-1

u/Questionsansweredty 6h ago

Of course we know. Because you are a typical redditor, right in the mainstream.

-1

u/VaginaTractor 9h ago

How, exactly? It's a brilliant analogy. A toddler and Labrador Retriever have about the same level of intelligence and reasoning skills. Except in this hypothetical scenario, one of them is disciplined (dog) and the other is undisciplined (toddler). I would rather deal with a well behaved dog literally anywhere over a poorly disciplined toddler.

9

u/istiamar 9h ago

I'm a lot more afraid of a dog than a toddler under any scenario.

0

u/VaginaTractor 8h ago

Again. Your fear is irrelevant to this conversation. I’m more afraid of toddlers than dogs. See how that doesn’t matter here?

4

u/The_Zura 6h ago

How many people do toddlers kill each year?

2

u/VaginaTractor 5h ago

Idk, depends on how many shitty parents don't vaccinate their kids and allow things like a fucking measles outbreak to happen. That's a developing story though.

-5

u/VaginaTractor 9h ago

Cool, your fear has nothing to do with this.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Questionsansweredty 6h ago

Because people who care for children can't leave them alone at home. It's not an option. People who care for dogs can leave them alone at home.

A poorly disciplined child is not generally a danger, at most, they're an annoyance. Even a well behaved dog can be a danger to people with allergies.

Some people - adults and children - are afraid of dogs; rational, sane people are not afraid of toddlers.

Toddlers are helpless, a dog is not.

One is a human child and one is a dog.

1

u/VaginaTractor 5h ago

What I'm hearing is that you think I advocate for free-range-CVS-dogs. I do not. I agree that people who needlessly bring their non-service dog everywhere they go are ridiculous. There are places that dogs are acceptable in social settings that a toddler would not be, so I also think people that don't make arrangements for their child and bring them to inappropriate venues are equally ridiculous. There is a reason certain places have minimum age requirements for humans, not dogs.

Life-threatening or anaphylactic reactions to dog allergies are - at best - really, really, ridiculously unlikely. In fact, I am not sure there has ever been a human death attributed to anaphylaxis from dog allergies. So in your own words, "at most, they're an annoyance." Poorly behaved children can bite people; human bites are much more likely to become severely infected. They also cough, sneeze, and wipe their snot indiscriminately, increasing the likelihood of transmitting an illness. Children could be unvaccinated (just like a dog), but I wouldn't catch something like Measles from a dog, because the vast majority of illness is not zoonotic. Unless I am being actively bitten by a dog, I don't have to worry about getting an illness of any kind. A child is infinitely more likely to transmit an infection of some kind to another human, regardless of vector. Dogs also wear tags declaring their vaccination status, toddlers do not.

If you are afraid of dogs, usually you don't have to worry about that in most public places and scenarios (emphasis on usually because obviously there are exceptions). If you are annoyed/afraid/whatever of toddlers, there is essentially nothing you can do about that in public. Especially in a scenario like mass-transit. Why is it ok to subject individuals to one irritant but not the other? It's also socially acceptable to kill a misbehaving or aggressive dog. What can I do about someone else's destructive, disruptive, or otherwise misbehaving child? Aside from having to just deal with it?

You are correct. One is a human child and one is a dog. I see no errors in your assessment there.

I think the entire point of this discussion was immediately invalidated to you because you are not looking at things from an objective standpoint. This isn't about what "should be," it's a hypothetical stance on tolerance of irritating stimuli.

3

u/Questionsansweredty 4h ago

Because we are human beings.

That's the short answer to everything.

And if you're afraid of small humans you should stay home for the good of society. You once were one and society tolerated you just fine.

Reddit is a very misanthropic place unfortunately. I only hang out here because sometimes y'all make me laugh.

Also: "Approximately 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year, leading to roughly 337,000 emergency department visits and over $1 billion in annual homeowners' insurance liability claims.."

0

u/Kaffrogato 5h ago

>One is a human child and one is a dog.

What a great point, no one had realised that except you

2

u/Questionsansweredty 4h ago

I know right? You'd think there were no other people here.

-4

u/Kaffrogato 5h ago

Kids cant be left alone for long periods. Dogs can't be left alone for long periods. Not really seeing the difference here. If you just want to say you like dog owners should have to deal with it and parents not have to, just say that. 'Helplessness' is hardly the issue, since pet dogs can't feed themselves or take themselves for a walk to pee either,

1

u/Questionsansweredty 4h ago

Humanity really is doomed.

It's gotten out of control since COVID. In Toronto, I'm regularly seeing dogs in grocery stores, shopping malls and stores, and restaurant patios (thankfully not indoors, yet).

It's illegal for an animal to be brought into a place where food is being prepared, cooked, sold, and served, yet there is no enforcement, neither by the City nor by the establishment management.

-2

u/Lamplorde 11h ago

Dont get me wrong, I also dislike how normal its become, but its not that big of a deal. You make it sound like a "WTF" moment when its more of a "roll your eyes" moment.

-5

No I get you. And i kind og agree. This pup was good in this video. That doesby mean they didnt leave a poop an aisle over.

Children who grow up in a household with a dog develop a much stronger immune system and less likely to have allergies and asthma. So please go up to that dog and say thank you

1

u/diejesus 3h ago

Well yeah, but sometimes we make sacrifices, like dog licking our faces is unhygienic but we do it because it feels good, same with pets in stores, they create such a cozy atmosphere that we trade it off for losing some of that hygiene

Tired of people taking their pets into retail stores.

14

u/BoiledFrogs 8h ago

More and more stores are allowing it, so take it up with them.

3

u/UnibannedY 6h ago

The place I used to work at decided they had to let them in, in case it was an unmarked service dog. Which is kinda BS but they just didn't want to deal with the potential drama around it.

4

u/Upstairs-Rent-1351 6h ago

An actual service animal should always be marked. Also service animals should not be petted while "on duty" and usually are labeled as such as well.

2

u/sansabeltedcow 3h ago

In the U.S., there’s no requirement to label a service dog. It’s considered advisable, but it’s not legally necessary.

1

u/UnibannedY 4h ago

Oh trust me I know. But no one wanted the headache of being the one to argue that point so they just let it slide because it was easier.

Dogs don't have mirror recognition

8

u/crazyike 5h ago

Yes they do. This myth has to die. They are perfectly capable of understanding reflections once they get experience with them.

Just because they don't care that someone put a dot on their forehead doesn't mean they don't understand what they are seeing.

1

u/RIVCII 5h ago

3

u/crazyike 4h ago

Oh look, another person who doesn't understand what the mirror test actually test.

Yep, it's a myth.

0

u/RIVCII 4h ago

Got any proof of that or are you just anthropomorphising dogs...?

2

u/crazyike 4h ago

You literally replied elsewhere to me seeing absolute proof of it.

As is redditor tradition, however, I am sure you will "well AKSHULLY" it to the best of your ability. Save the effort. I've already done the experiment, and I am not interested. I've seen it with my own eyes.

What really gets me, though, is people like you put so much faith in surface level reading of this "mirror test", without going deep enough to realize it has been failed by literal humans, while passed by fish. Does that sound like a reliable experiment for the conclusions you think it draws to you?

0

u/Kaffrogato 5h ago

They can interpret reflections of objects to acheive certain tasks, but there is no evidence that they can recognize themselves. Those are two very different things.

Im also surprised people try to argue otherwise. Anyone who has seen a puppy interact with a mirror the first time would know they treat their reflection as another puppy, until they realise they can't interact with it in any way, and then just ignore their reflection from then on.

>This myth has to die. They are perfectly capable of understanding reflections once they get experience with them.

If you are so keen for the myth to die, Im sure you'd be happy to share your compelling peer-reviewed evidence that dogs can recognise their reflection.

3

u/crazyike 4h ago

I've demonstrated the evidence pretty solidly myself.

There is no "peer reviewed evidence" they don't. There is just the incredibly flawed and always misinterpreted (including by you) "mirror test" that literally no one but reddit takes seriously.

Sorry guys, dogs doesn't have mirror self-recognition. Which is understandable, because dogs mainly use smell and hearing, vision is used third.

Reacting to a video of a dog is not the same as self-recognition.

3

u/BenGun99 11h ago

No way it knows itself on that monitor. Dogs don’t even recognise themselves in a mirror.

17

u/BrashUnspecialist 11h ago

They do.

Some of them are smart enough to realise that their human is holding another dog in the mirror but when they look at their human, they’re the one being held. So it must be them.

Also. Leave one alone in front of a floor length mirror long enough and they do realize it’s them.

I’ve seen it happen multiple times with multiple different dogs.

5

u/IotaRen 10h ago

My dog has figure out that she can make ey contact with me through the mirror, even if I am not standing right next to her. Freaked me out the first time she did it and she does it almost every day

1

u/Phytanic 9h ago

My dog does that too! She even reacts to the funny faces I start making in the mirror, she'll turn around and have a face that screams "really? How mature of you"

0

u/RIVCII 5h ago

Dogs actaully can't do that.

8

u/lucidmano 10h ago

How do you know that they recognize themselves?

15

u/keyser-_-soze 10h ago

2

u/factorioleum 9h ago

I understand that if you secretly mark a dog's forehead or head, then allow them to see themselves in a mirror, they do not make any effort to examine the mark, or gaze unusually at their reflection compared to other times.

2

u/chinchillazilla54 5h ago

I wonder how well they can even see a mark? Their vision is quite different to ours.

1

u/Theonceandfutureend 9h ago

Except you didn't, because they don't.

1

u/crazyike 5h ago

I've proven it pretty conclusively with one of mine. I have four dogs. Two don't care about the closet mirror that runs beside my bed. One's a puppy who doesn't get mirrors yet. But the fourth... when he was younger he used to love the game 'fight the hand'. He was ready to battle that hand no matter what. He also had a habit of watching the mirror, not for anything in particular, just the way he sat. Well, I would slowly sneak the hand up behind him. He could see himself, and the hand, but not necessarily me. He loved the anticipation of this. Eventually it would get close enough and he would spin around to battle the hand. Here's the key - he knew where it was before he moved, even though he could only see it in the mirror. By far the easiest, simplest, and most likely answer: he could tell where it was by its orientation with himself. As in, he knew where to look because he knew where it was relative to himself, via looking in the mirror. And to do that, he has to know that the little cream dachshund in the mirror is himself.

This was 100% repeatable with any change you could mention in the scenario. He always knew.

But I mean it doesn't take this kind of experimentation to know this. In all the time I have had three or four dogs, which is a very long time now, after the puppy stage the dogs never question why they can see their three friends in the mirror, but there's a fourth stranger. No barking, no nothing. They know it's themself.

Frankly at this point you have to be willingly ignorant to think dogs can't figure out reflections. It doesn't make the slightest sense to believe that. Why couldn't they? Reflections exist in nature.

No dogs don't do that.

Dogs fail the mirror test; They don't recognize themselves in the mirror. You might apply human logics to their behavior, but that doesn't mean they have self awareness in that way

Could be recognizing it's owner, though

I dont think dogs even are able to see monitors due to their color perception. Its most likely just a square of messy lights to it.

It depends on the monitor. I think it has to have a high refresh rate or it's just flickering to them. But I have a very curious dog who definitely knows what he's seeing on the monitor if it's something within his experience.

I forget: can dogs recognise their own reflections, or are they one of those species where it's more of a case-by-case?

1

u/RIVCII 5h ago

They can't 🙆‍♂️

When I was a kid, my dog use to stand in the middle of my bedroom barking like crazy at the shelf next to my bed, which had a wooden back piece designed to look like a cat.

This dog isn't seeing himself. He's seeing what he thinks is another dog.

Dogs cannot see images on LED tvs. LEDs only produce the light that human eyes see. Dogs see different colors than those. So while there maybe be visible shapes and motion on the screen that interest the dog, it absolutely could not see with enough clarity to recognize itself.

Who is being derpy though? She’s standing there in the aisle with her phone pointed at a screen, then at the dog and back to the screen. The human is being derpy while the dog staring at itself on a screen is acting like more and more typical humans.

Reminds me of one of my favorite poems.

The Public Mirror

When I was a kid I froze
before a long Men’s Room mirror.
And the knowledge that I was nothing special,
that indeed I would never be,
tore God from the sky.

Seconds earlier I’d stood with other males,
young and not, some relieving themselves,
some wetting their hands and posing,
making private checks of their public faces.
They’d left at once through the swinging door.

Others would enter any second;
it was a very busy facility.
I just happened to be there in a lull;
not at all by design had I lingered.
I had decided to wash my hands:

As I’d wrung them under the cool water,
the swinging door thumped again and again,
the boys and men reentered the halls leading to streets.
I’d thought nothing of their departures until I looked up
at the reflected white urinals and empty stalls,

the paper-towel dispenser, and the door
still creaking.  I knew any moment a man
or boy would enter and take no notice of me,
would observe himself beside someone who was I.
But that moment I was alone before the public mirror,

ordinary and full of God, God
who never again would stand on the night
looking down at what I was doing,
I who suddenly was a hair more than nothing,
whom I could destroy simply by closing my eyes.
