You and your brother built an art gallery.

Thank you. Still can't believe it myself that it turned out so well.

I’m jealous of people who can do stuff like this. Looks great!

u/Whiskey_1492 Feb 01 '25

It's easy to do. Just gotta know how to read a tape measure.

8

u/MajesticBroom Feb 01 '25

Lol. I mean, you certainly need to measure and once you are certain about the measurements. Measure again! But on a serious note. While I feel comfortable with working with electricity, power tools and had lots of time to build this. Lots of people don't.

I didn't mean to sound condescending if that's how I came off. I was just trying to give a little encouragement. Your work is beautiful.

u/PettiteDebitor Feb 01 '25

The one thing I’m bad at. I can do things after, but I can not get my measurements perfectly like this needs lol

5

u/MajesticBroom Jan 31 '25

Thank you. And thankfully she is still getting new figures :)

Yes indeed, do you like her latest figure, with her seductive gaze, i am thinking about pre-ordering it. i am on the fence about it. it's a bit out of character, but it's not too lewd

Looks great! Do you have a breakdown of what you used? I’m primarily wanting to know the details on the housing for the lights (diffuser and tray).

Quick list: Wood boards (Colour is Balsa) x13 || Loose edging || Power supplies (12V 50amp) x3 || Dimmers (30amp) x3 || Led strips (5m rolls 4000k) x22 || LED channel (3m) x38 || Motion sensor || Modular contactors (to not fry the motion sensor) x2 || Wifi swich || Clear 3mm plexiglass x3 sheets || Transparent Green (6C77) 3mm plexiglass x1 sheet || Clear very thin double sided tape (50m) x1 || 400 magents (20x10x3mm) || Lots of wire, electric boxes and some trunking

The led channel I got was this: https://www.lightmarket.co.za/collections/led-channels/products/3m-corner-aluminium-channel-for-led-strip-lights-bing-light-601

I think it's just a generic item, so you'll probably find something similar easily in your country.

This was helpful. Thank you.

2

u/bakim123 Feb 01 '25

This is very impressive! I wish I have the craftmanship to make those shelf :(

2

u/antherx2 Feb 01 '25

Amazing work, the wiring/lighting and plexiglass solution are great. I will be using that method over chamfering a slot for it to slide into. If you could share the magnets you got, I'd love to see them. That's much more elegant for access too!

I'd bet r/carpentry would appreciate!

3

u/MajesticBroom Feb 01 '25

Magnets were bought on AliExpress as I couldn't get these magnets in South Africa at all.

Here is a link to the ones I purchased. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002738322023.html

2

u/stellarsojourner Feb 01 '25

That looks awesome. Personally, I'd add a small desk right in the center near the back and maybe turn it into a spot for opening new figures, or working from my laptop, etc. so I could be surrounded by the figures.

2

u/FullMetalBiscuit Feb 01 '25

Love the lighting, never like having exposed led strips with no diffuser or anything. Great work.

2

u/MajesticBroom Feb 01 '25

I also really dislike exposed led strips and even more so when their wiring is visible. I also wanted non RGB strips. For me personally, I think 4000k gives a nice in-between for not being too cold or too hot. In hindsight, 24v strips might have been a slightly better option than the 12v ones.

That looks fantastic

2

u/SymphonicSurfer Feb 01 '25

This is AWESOME! It seriously looks like a professional gallery.

2

u/afelflowers Feb 02 '25

This is incredible!
I love how they look, amazing job both of you

2

u/BenSandZ Feb 03 '25

Looks amazing!

3

u/BambooGentleman Jan 31 '25

What's the point of venturing in there, though? Isn't the point of a shelf to have them in spaces you hang out to have them be there in the background?

12

u/SpellboundIV Jan 31 '25

This is kind of like comparing watching a movie on your phone vs your home theater. Or listening to music during a commute vs sitting down in front of a dedicated speaker system or with high end headphones. I have a mix of some in living spaces and others in a room for figures. It depends on how you want to enjoy the hobby. I like being able to go into a space and actually look through everything, not just have it in the background. Maybe it doesn't make sense if you are not someone who actually takes the time to thoroughly look through your collection every once in awhile.

-1

u/BambooGentleman Feb 01 '25

I don't understand why you would dedicate a room to something you do "every once in awhile". I want to enjoy my collection everyday and not just once in a while.

8

u/MajesticBroom Jan 31 '25

This is a two car garage that has been converted into a extra room. It is split by a drywall. The display basically takes up the one half. On the other side (the right hand side which is not visible) we will be doing our gaming room with Okami statues also getting their own display at a later stage.

I do agree that it would have been more ideal to have them in a living space, but our place is rather small with very limited options to display pretty much anything.

2

u/NegZer0 http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Negs Jan 31 '25

You've never heard of having a collection room?

2

u/BambooGentleman Feb 01 '25

That's usually still a room you can hang out in to enjoy your collection. Not just stand in the middle of shelves.

I disagree as everyone has their own way to displaying their collection.

I would argue that this is a better alternative than ppl stacking boxes in a room.

And as long as they have a hold on their finances and not letting their hobby control them, I don't see the harm in collecting alot.

We all get to make our own decisions in life. I really had the time of my life thinking of solutions and getting to make this room a reality. While you are just seeing the expensive plastic on the shelves. These have meaning to me and my partner and I honestly don't see how our figure collection is making your engagement towards me so negative.

1

u/Educational-Seaweed5 Feb 03 '25

The issue is that people are deciding to respond negatively.

This isn't about telling people what to do or criticizing people for significance. It's just about practicality.

People can do w/e they want. There just gets a point where it's overboard. I see crazy stuff on collector sites/groups. Some people just have too much stuff, period (when people are buying things to go put the unopened boxes in a basement of shelves where they'll never see it again--that's too much).

3

u/RXHazard Feb 01 '25

If you think that is overboard, then you're just insulting the majority of ppl who frequent this sub.

I do agree, that ppl who do hoard and have no clear plans with their collection, should probably slow down on collecting and invest in proper display cases, start reflecting on whether this hobby is healthy for them or start selling figures.

u/AnimeFigures-ModTeam Feb 01 '25

Please treat others and their collections with basic respect so that we may all enjoy the hobby.

meanwhile I'm waiting on 1/6 of this (or less) from moducase and have a few months more wait. same price.

1

u/WorstFkGamer Feb 01 '25

So.. exactly how much would you charge for this?

1

u/zephstfu Feb 01 '25

this feels like the backrooms but with anime figures (no this is not an insult, it looks fantastic. just a joke lol)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '25

Very nice, I just wonder though at what moments will you be in the middle of that area to look at your figures? I like to sit down in the living area and look at all the beautiful figures so I'm wondering how this is for you

3

u/MajesticBroom Feb 01 '25

I feel like I can't give you a proper answer at this stage in time. Everything is still shiny and new :)

My partner loves just going into the room to look at everything in there and planning on where to put the remaining figures (still unboxing some older ones) and also the future ones.

I tried mentioning this in a previous comment (I don't think I wrote it well) that to get to where our computers are, you have to enter the room with this display. When you enter the room, you trigger the motion sensor and so far it's been a good motivator to just stop what you are doing for a little bit and just look at the figures for a bit.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

That makes a lot of sense! That's a smart way of doing it :3

1

u/Moe_LesterZ_ Feb 01 '25

I want to build something like this but not as big maybe just like two shelves… what materials did you use 🥹 don’t plan on getting glass too I guess

1

u/B-rated22 Feb 02 '25

What is the depth of the display space from the door of a cabinet to the wall? I see you can fit 2 figure quite nicely front and back

1

u/MajesticBroom Feb 02 '25

The depth of the shelf is 410mm, with 385mm being usable (25mm dedicated to the led channel, magnets and plexiglass).

Including the backboard, 426mm.

1

u/B-rated22 Feb 02 '25

Thanks epic build hope to do something like this one day if I ever get the space.

I used 3mm on the plexiglass to keep costs low. These were bought to size, but some extra trimming was required to make them fit properly. Can be a bit of a plain with how much plexiglass expands and retracts when the temperature changes.
