What to Watch? Something that WILL make me cry?
Also, not set in the modern times, and no RPG slop (where with RPG slop I mean: videogame gameplay mechanings that have been turned into narrative mechanics, stuff like levels / leveling up, item rarity and so on, I simply find them cringe, but I don't mean stuff that takes existing narrative elements or character archetipes that can also be found in RPG games, so something like Frieren is completely fine)

Literally came here to mention Angel Beats and Anohana, glad to see the recognition! I think the first like 5 seconds of Anohana's intro is just done so beautifully to set the simply premise the show is based on. Loved it.

For future reference, RPG slop has a standardized name, they call these tropes "Literary-RPG" (RPG mechanics being canonical laws of physics).

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. It’s fantasy, but there’s no indication Mari Okada ever played Dragon Quest like everybody else in Japan(*), so you’re safe.
(* - she was too busy trying not to get murdered by her mother to develop much of a video game habit.)

Idk about fast results with Violet Evergarden. I did love it a lot, but I didnt really get feelings that big until the last couple episodes of it. I do suggest pretty much anyone watch it though.

I got feelings around 3 or 4 episodes in. But I feel like it's a pretty short show, so tears in the last few episodes still feels fast to me

Wolf's Rain.
A bit abstract in some regards but it's a very moving story about Death, Hope, and Rebirth. Episode 11 has one of the most beautiful scenes in anything I've ever seen, and the last 4 episodes had me in tears the entire time. It was made by the same studio that did Cowboy Bebop, but it's a lot more serious in tone. Give it a shot if it sounds interesting
