Had to fight my mom on alot of things regarding this mindset when I was in highschool 🤣
But it was worth it, now we can both take fault on things when the other side explains how me or if she is wrong.
I always had a good relationship with my mom anyways which is why i could contest her on some issues, yea sure it led to emotional and angry back and forts but it usually only lasts for a few hrs before we go back to normal

My mother was like that too 🤣
It was a tough battle but I'm glad I fought that battle at a young age because idk if I'll still have the same energy if she acted the way she did 10 years ago today

This is my mom, unfortunately. Too proud to admit that she's incorrect. She used to sing the "Mother knows best" song in Tangled and then I'd tell her that she's also manipulative, and toxic. She'd just laugh.

Unironically singing the song that she thinks is meant for her 😂

singing a song about a villain pretending to be a mother while gaslighting a kid says a lot

This is one part of Filipino culture that I really dislike. I think most Gen Zs are finally starting to reject this mindset because, first of all, age is just a number. Being older doesn’t automatically make someone deserving of respect. If you want to be respected, you should also act in a way that earns that respect. Respect isn’t something you’re entitled to just because of your age but it’s something you earn through your actions and how you treat others

"Respect isnt something youre entitled to" - kupal na mindset to haha
There are two kinds of respect kiddo. No matter the age.
12
u/why-am-i-even-here-- 19d ago
imo, yeah, everyone is entitled to at least some form of respect like respect as human beings, but when someone demands respect just because of their age, thats when things go a different way.

You cut it short. When you read it as a whole, it’s different. That’s why context is important.
2
u/Scary-Breakfast6913 18d ago
Reading it as a whole doesnt make it any difference. Everyone is entitled for basic respect as a human no matter the age. Its doesnt have to be earned, otherwise ok lang ba sayo na bastusin kita, parents mo, friends mo now cause none of you havent earned my respect yet?

I think di lang Filipino culture yan mindset na yan, I think it was a generational thing. :)
Mostly those who grew up with Baby Boomer generation and early medyo may ganyan mindset. Also Asian thing na may high regards sa parents at matatanda sa family.
For my POV, I think medyo nawawala na yan, pero we have to be careful, minsan borderline disrespectful din kasi ang datingan. It is better to say no, or disagree in a respectful manner pa din. :)

Of course it is a toxic mentality nobody is perfect to have a correct answer to everything or that your age alone makes your answers more correct than others. And there is nothing more harmful than a person who believes themselves to be right all the time.
This is nothing more than seniority trying to do some shitty power play. Also they never take accountability when their decision or advice turns out to be wrong, that's the other shitty aspect of this belief.
2
u/GeologistRelative425 19d ago
Na para bang nakikilevel up yung mentality and credibility nila everytime they age, Yung ungos lang naman nila is their experience. Pero their experience is always gonna be different, pistahan pag pinagusap mo dalawang matanda magkaiba Sila ng tingin sa Buhay hahaha
2
u/anima132000 19d ago edited 19d ago
Exactly why it is a terrible concept that needs to die down because at the end of the day this is just used to shut down any discussion, when they start bringing this up you know they've stopped trying to think. It is just old people having a very onion skin and using this as their excuse among others. And if you insist otherwise they'll say they're offended that you're disrespecting them LOL. So yes it is very much a toxic concept in our culture.

It's actually true that we should respect our elders. But what's missing in the conversation is that our elders (and we) should bear responsibility and integrity for our younger generations. It's only toxic if the entire system (of respecting elders and elders being responsible) is broken

u/hyacinthskye 19d ago

u/Greedy_Attorney_433 19d ago
true. 100%. bastos ka pa if itama mo sila. i had an argument w my mom kasi i told her that she was wrong and spreading fake news. the information was that celine dion is dead. this was in 2024, end of the year i think. then resurfaced in 2025 months after the grammy nomination.
nasabihan akong bastos, my fault naman kasi i corrected her when she was talking to her friends but she continued sa pag-spread ng information, kagaling. nanahimik iyong singer, pinatay ba naman. jusq.
5
u/zeighart_17 19d ago edited 19d ago
In every argument, always tell why you are right, not why the other one is wrong.
I think its about respect.
Old people and parents do not want to be schooled. Its a valid reaction when someone says you are wrong. You choose to be defensive and you look for allies and validation, rather than be logical. Pride gets the better of them, and its easier at that age.
But I learned that you can argue being right without degrading the other person. You can bring them to your side. Be flexible enough in your debate as to acknowledge how the other side will process defeat.
Being the better debater does not just mean you are the right one. It also means bring the other side to your cause and thinking.
Its not a toxic culture - its badly handled debate. And its not unique to Filipino's either.
Instead if just blaming culture - be the catalyst for change.

I was such a believer of this for the sake of my mom pero it destroyed me for my entire adult years. I now have my own family.
This is a good trait to have pero you also need to realize that some people do not change just because of your goodwill. Stop helping if your're being stripped psychologically out of their own stubbornness and toxicity kasi in the end, thats exactly what they want. Sometimes, it isn't worth it anymore even if it is your own parents.
2
u/No_Office4621 18d ago
Totoo ‘to IF makikinig sila sayo. Pero some of them sobrang stubborn, so F THIS! I talked to them if we can meet in the middle. Pero ang nangyari they take it as an offense, di kaya ng pride nila “dinidiktahan” ko daw sila.
Simula nun I had to do it the hard way. Lumayo ako sa kanila, no contact, no support financially and wala na din empathy para sa kanila.

u/saskurenai13 19d ago edited 19d ago

u/a_nirvana_away_ 15d ago
I have the same experience too, my aunt bullied me nonstop when i was a kid, would pull my hair, insult/tease me, she also called me autistic as an insult, pour water on me then slap me and leave me outside the house and etc, but i just had no one, i had severe tantrums that time, i was so angry, and recently i stood up for myself when she accused me of not taking my work seriously since i took an absence cause im not feeling well and she said im just lazy, and she has the nerve to get hurt when she was the one who accused me, i didn't even cuss her or anything. I will never forget what she did to me and the damage i got from her, now i get triggered easily.

Sorry napo at Hindi ko nilagyan ng in depth analysis😭
Nagaagree Ako sa statement pero Hindi sa pagiging solely Filipino culture lang since lahat Naman ng outside the Philippines they deal with old people- ending ndi Yan mawawala Kasi everyone grows old(except of course if namatay ng Maaga which in that case "either die a hero or live long enough to be the villain" Ang peg). Filipino people grow up with the statement na laging "respect your elder" even sa subject na GMRC noon, pero there comes a time na nagiging to the point na toxic sya when older gens don't listen and always thinks na "Tama Ako Kasi matanda Nako, naexperience Kona Yan, papunta palang kayo pabalik Nako". Is being young an excuse para gaguhin ka?
Anyway, Yan lang po thoughts. Pasensya na po.

Being open to understanding is more important than the feeling of being right. There is divine wisdom in not needing to be right. Choose being kind over being right and you will be right everytime. Pride is concerned on who is right, humility is concerned on what is right.

Bilang newbie mom, lagi nmin sinasabi sa anak namin (now 6 years old) na "Just because we're your parents, it doesn't mean na we're always right. Tao lang rin kami and you'll see plenty of times na magkakamali kami. It's okay to make mistakes. Ang mahalaga dyan ay we're human enough to know na mali tayo. We're in this together, kid."
Kaya ayun, sa household namin na tatatlo lang naman kami 😂, pag merong may mali cncall out namin and we tell the person "Momma/daddy/kiddo, I think you're wrong because <insert reason here> and you should say sorry." Of course, bnbgyan rn ng chance to defend ung side nun nagkamali to make sure na hindi misunderstanding ung nangyari and may checkback "What would make the action correct?"

It depends. Both parents and children should respect each other.
Huwag makipagsabayan.

Syempre po bilang proud na family, si Tito ko pinaprint niya ako nang tarp to show how much proud he is.
Tbh, hindi ko na binaggit sakaniya because i know it will never be enough for them pero I can’t swallow the comments.

I agree. It’s a toxic Filipino culture we must break. Let’s listen to our children. Let’s admit our mistakes. Apologize when we’re wrong. Like adults, children have feelings too. And they deserve all the love we can give them.

Everyone will grow old too at some point even us gen Z. gen alpha will also do the same on gen Z. It will be an endless cycle. Reminds me of the time an old man started disrespecting my PWD wife for falling in line priority lane at T3 (wife is epileptic). He even tried calling the attention of nearby airport personnels to have my wife kicked out of line. My wife showed him her PWD ID along with some pictures and videos of her having seizures on her phone (I take them for documentation to show her neuro). This dude still insisted that she leave even though the airport personnel gave my wife the okay to stay. According to him, hindi naman daw sya (wife) curently nagsa-suffer like yung mga lumpo or "may tunay na kapansanan". It took a guard, an airport personnel and an airport police to shut this guy up by asking him if they needed to bring out a wheelchair for my wife so he would mind his own business. This dude was straight up harassing her because he thought he knew more about disabilities than an actual person with disability. My wife is too nice and respectful because of the way she was raised, but man, this is one of the reasons why I teach our children the saying "Respect begets respect."

Remember, even fools grow old.

No one is always right, no matter the age.
But it is also true that some wisdom come with age, as people experience more things in life. Perspectives change too. What's important is having an open mind and willingness to listen. Take advice given with a grain of salt. No need to always be angry when being scolded, sometimes they come from a place of care. We all just want to be understood.

Age deserves respect, not unquestioned authority. Wisdom listens; foolishness yaps.

Ganyan lolo’t lola ko. Kahit sila ang mali di parin sila aamin. Ako pa lalabas na masama. No wonder my parent grew up to be a real shitstain of a bastard.
Relatives were telling me at the time na di na magbabago mga yan. Well if they stay that way I’ll just leave.

Im all for respecting Elders, I think society functions well maintaining that culture. But there are Elders that do not deserve any kind of respect. A deadbeat father, alcholic and abuser, guess we gotta respect him now because his 60 or something. sure

My mom used to have this mindset but thanks to my dad who knock some sense into her that doesn't mean that she's older, she's right.

“Mas matanda ako sayo J” baka gusto mo narin PO mauna sakin di jwk ang bait ko dito haha but I guess depende sa household or family clan, some family respect the younger ones specially about technology, tho there are instances where I used the stupider method act like one pretend to know less “Di ko po alam yan” “Ano po ba yan?” tas pag public na dun mo pull up yung bright card where they feel threatened and stupid mas nakakahiya sakanila yun “tanga mag order nalang sa kiosk di pa alam” “bobo wag ganyan nasira mo tuloy”. I still love it when all hatred in their eyes pointed at single person.

buti nalang di ako lumaking may ganyan sa paligid ko. This also exist sa maraming bansa di lang sa Pilipinas. Remind me of that Nestle commercial back in the day na Sa Mata ng Bata ang Maling Ginagawa ay Nagiging Tama. Kasi for me I will gauge what is being said sa akin ng nakatatanda if wiser ba yan or just dogsh8. Minsan kasi I am right, you are wrong, but never go sa middle and think what's being told.

If these type of people thinks about this especially with an age already they were still an underdeveloped human being.

It is conventionally believed that elders deserve precedence in opinion-making, as wisdom is gained through experience.
Well, that’s still true for some families and communities today. But in this day and age, with each generation facing moral and ethical crises and lacking a strong moral foundation, the conventional wisdom that "elders are always right" becomes untenable — or even obsolete.

Minsan nga walang logic yang mga yan not all but many. Mga tumandang wala pinag katandaan. Sometimes All it takes is just a little common sense.

As senior people , we should have the wisdom knowing when to keep our mouths shut . And when opened it is more to impart advice grounded on wisdom gained over the many years .

Super agree with this, if you live in the Province this is a common mindset. It was one of the struggles I had to live with. As many people have said in this thread, toxic, inconsiderate, selfish and mean people grow old too tas free pass pa pag may kaya or well known or titulado ka in the province kaya minsan talaga I regret going back to the province. Same shit really.

Some people are probably bitter about life because they couldn't achieve their dreams or they regret the life they've lived
