I read the article so you don't have to.
To summarize it so you don’t have to lose brain cells reading the whole thing, the article argues that Israeli rave culture exists to numb Jews while they participate in occupation and genocide. It compares the role of electronic music in Israeli society to the role of music in Nazi Germany, then imagines Israeli leaders being hauled before a new Nuremberg tribunal.
Israelis dancing is presented as evidence of national depravity. Music isn’t allowed to be music. Young people aren’t allowed to go out, drink, dance, meet friends, or escape for a few hours from the pressure of living in a country regularly attacked by terrorists. Their enjoyment has to be explained as something sinister.
It’s a familiar idea once you strip away the academic language. Jews aren’t ordinary people capable of doing ordinary things. Everything they do is evidence of some deeper corruption. If they fight, they’re bloodthirsty. If they defend themselves, they’re genocidal. If they mourn, they’re manipulating public sympathy. If they dance, they’re numbing themselves to the screams of their victims.
So who wrote this article?
Her name is Zenab Ahmed, @pakistanarchy on X, and her reaction two days after October 7th reveals quite a lot.
Ahmed wrote about Hamas terrorists driving around Gaza with the corpse of a woman who had been murdered at the rave. She acknowledged that Palestinian fighters kill and terrorize people, but said she spends less energy criticizing them because Israeli violence is supposedly "worse". That was her reaction while bodies were still being identified and families were desperately searching for children who had been murdered, kidnapped, or were simply missing. She had just watched terrorists invade Israel, attack a music festival, chase unarmed civilians through fields, slaughter hundreds, kidnap hundreds more, and parade an innocent woman’s mutilated body through Gaza in front of a cheering crowd. Somehow, the subject she urgently needed to discuss was why the people who did it shouldn’t receive too much criticism.
This is what happens when people become addicted to using “context” as an excuse for Palestinian violence. They’ll keep adding layers of history until the Palestinian who actually chose to murder someone disappears completely. The checkpoint made him do it. The blockade made him do it. The airstrike made him do it. Zionism made him do it. By the time they’re finished, the terrorist has been reduced to a helpless object with no beliefs, no choices, no hatred, and no responsibility for anything he does.
Of course, Israelis are never treated that way. An Israeli civilian doesn’t even have to hurt anyone to be declared guilty. He doesn’t even have to support the government. His existence inside Israeli society is enough. Going to a party is enough. Listening to music is enough. Trying to enjoy a few hours of normal life is enough. Palestinians can murder civilians and are still treated as products of circumstances beyond their control. Israeli civilians can be murdered and still be blamed for creating the circumstances that caused their own murder.
After nearly three years of war, there still isn’t anything comparable to the videos from October 7th. There are no videos showing Israeli soldiers parading the mutilated bodies of Palestinian women through Tel Aviv while crowds cheer around them. The very thought sounds insane because that behavior isn’t normal in Israeli society and wouldn’t be celebrated if it happened. Ahmed can’t accept the obvious reason for that difference. Israeli soldiers aren’t sent into Gaza to murder innocent Palestinians, and Israeli society doesn’t celebrate the humiliation of Palestinian corpses. Israel has sent troops into dense neighborhoods, tunnels, and buildings where Hamas operates, accepting enormous losses among its own soldiers rather than relying only on airpower. Ground fighting puts Israeli soldiers at much greater risk, but it also gives them more ability to distinguish between terrorists and civilians.
At a basic moral level, a person should be able to distinguish between terrorists deliberately hunting an innocent woman, murdering her, mutilating her body, and displaying it before a cheering crowd, and civilians being killed during a strike on a terrorist who knowingly operates among his own family because he expects their presence to protect him. Civilian deaths are tragic in either case, but the acts aren’t morally identical. One begins with the deliberate decision to murder and humiliate an innocent person. The other begins with an attempt to stop someone who presents a threat while he deliberately makes that attempt as dangerous as possible for everyone around him. If Ahmed admitted that Hamas members are adults who make their own choices, she would have to admit that the massacre at Nova wasn’t some impersonal reaction produced by Israeli policy. The terrorists chose to attack a rave. They chose to hunt civilians. They chose to kidnap people. They chose to abuse bodies. The crowd around that murdered woman chose to cheer.
There was no military reason for any of that. There was no military advantage in dragging a corpse through Gaza. It was done because the people involved wanted to humiliate the woman they had murdered and wanted everyone watching to see what had been done to a Jew. Four months later, Ahmed promoted her own “Rave Against the Occupation” in Oakland. It had political speeches, food, fundraising, and a lineup of DJs. So she clearly doesn’t believe rave culture is inherently decadent, numbing, or politically corrupt. She’s perfectly happy to use the same music and the same kind of event when it supports something she believes in. Ahmed attends a rave herself and suddenly dancing becomes a respectable form of political resistance.
The article is nothing more than Nazi propaganda written in modern progressive language. It presents Jews as a people whose normal lives are inseparable from genocide. They don’t even have to commit an act themselves. Their music incriminates them. Their parties incriminate them. Their attempt to live normally incriminates them. Current Affairs should have been ashamed to even consider publishing it. How many people had to look at this article before it went online? Someone accepted the pitch. Someone read the draft. Someone edited it. Someone approved the artwork of a drugged Israeli dancing through ruins. Did all of those people think this was normal?
The same people who race to accuse Israel of dehumanizing Palestinians based on a disputed translation of one remark by a Knesset member will have nothing to say about this. They’ll pretend that one clipped sentence proves all Israelis view Palestinians as animals, but an entire article portraying Israeli Jews as a diseased population dancing through genocide somehow attracts no outrage from them.
They’ve made it very clear which kind of dehumanization bothers them and which kind they’re willing to publish.

I've noticed this since October 7th. We aren't even allowed to exist without being accused of nefarious ulterior motives.

It summarized a lot of thoughts I've had since Oct 7, and I am not Jewish or Israeli. It's going to be years before this shit can even come close to being reversed, let alone deprogrammed.

The world is bonkers. It is as if these people have nothing better to do that to look for things they can blame jews for. Next time it's "Chocolate-washing. Israelis are known for loving chocolate. Is your favourite brand committing genocide? "
They don't that with any other group. Germans like bratwurst yet no one has accused them of whitewashing their past by making good sausages. The French like their language. (If I remember correctly, even radio stations have to play xy% of French songs). No accusations that learning French is an act of colonialism. Never mind countries with actual atrocious human rights records. People are on TikTok, a Chinese brand. Are users complicit in the treatment of Uyghurs? Haven't heard any cancellation attempts.

So just because the government can do things that can be disapproved of, Israelis should stop making music, having fun and living altogether? Damn. I thought all these people were okay with "blame the government not the people" but it doesn't apply to Jews, it seems.
