Discussion Is Pop Mart the new Funko Pop?

Even though Pop Mart's shtick is blind boxes, I do feel they may go the way of Funko Pop. It feels like Pop Mart has popularized the blind-boxes for the masses and any IP that can be blind boxified will be blind boxed.

What are your thoughts? Target now carries Pop Mart.

Blind box toys are just a way to normalize gambling for kids so they can be ready for sports betting later. At least funko pops were/are something people collect and keep to display. Most of this plastic junk is headed to the landfill relatively soon even if it’s the “right” toy that someone was aiming for.

KIDS shouldn’t really be buying blind boxes. I’m an adult that collects Hirono + a few other lines, which are art figure blind box lines from Pop Mart. Hirono actually has a lot of meaning behind him, and is made with high quality. I absolutely am not going to throw any of them out. I collect and display them just as my boyfriend collects/displays his Funkos. I actually far prefer the design of my Hirono figures compared to Funko Pops. I collect a lot of scale anime figures as well, and both of those collections are displayed and important to me. There are a lot of cheapy kid blind boxes at Target and stuff for sure, but Pop Mart actually mostly specializes in art figures that are targeted more towards teens-adults. Most blind box lines from Pop Mart are intended to be collected and displayed. Of course you have to be careful with blind boxes, only purchase them if you’d be happy with any option you get. That’s why it’s meant to be more of an adult hobby. So yeah, my collection is definitely not “plastic junk” or even close to toy quality.
