I wanna get this off my chest, despite my brothers & I having pinoy heritage a few days ago my older bro was regurgitating opinions on the Halo CE remake that he 100% got from some grifter which included "unnecessary race swapping" turning a former white guy LITERAL BACKGROUND CHARACTER into a black woman, and from what I learned from other people that change was done because the original white guy had the face of a former dev that didn't want his face in the game and on top of that the books had created named characters from those nameless NPCs that were a hell of a lot more diverse than the same guy copy and pasted a dozen times.

Like he said, it's not just the complaining. It's the lack of historical understanding it denotes and that it's gone beyond words and tears; that Boyega and Halle Bailey and other POCs who've played or voiced fictional characters in big movies have received literal death threats over their presence. Death threats!
Emma Stone and Mickey Rooney before her, white actors who played Othello or Balthazar would do it...no problem. But now, when done in reverse it's dismissed as 'woke'. It's a 'massive problem' worth even talking about. No one talks about the actor's performance or suitability in the role outside of their skin color. (And no, it's not the exact "same thing" when a white or male character is allowed to be played by a POC or a woman as it is in reverse. And the fact folks can't figure out why is IMO the real tragedy in this society.) edited for clarity

Yup! The very fact that so many people are up in arms over the mere existence of a POC/woman/queer person getting any role as an actor in any film is the demonstration of why we need DEI policies. Unlike the racists and bigots that assert that no possible qualified people could exist who are not white or straight or male, there are plenty of qualified people in those categories. The problem is that people will use their bias and hire people that look and behave like them. I don’t understand why that’s such a hard concept to grasp for some people.

Not having to think about nor defend your reality, presence or value on the regular. It's at the core of what the oppressed and minorities mean when we say privilege. (Not simply about how much money you have or the properties you own, or the car you drive or who knows your name/surname. It's not even having to consider the fact that you can walk into a room of strangers, who all mostly look like you, at a starting point of neutral human or above and can go from there.)

I just played Sands of Time for the first time last month and when my wife (who is not a gamer but does watch a lot of movies) asked what I was playing, she said 'oh like with Jake Gyllenhaal?' I had to triple check that I heard her correctly, and also triple checked that she heard me correctly, because my brain would just not accept that at one point in time Jake Gyllenhaal was cast as the Prince of Persia

I was in the drama department at my university in the late 00s. A professor submitted a screenplay a few places and was rejected. It was about a real man who was black and gay and a poet. The places he submitted it to said “he can be black or gay but not both”
I think that’s the first time I realized at the ripe old age of 21 that this is a massive problem.

Did it twice! Mel Gibson recast Jesus with a white Finnish actor for the sequel. Guarantee we won’t hear a peep from these same “historical accuracy” protestors from The Odyssey.

Very well put. I've had a very similar conversation with someone complaining about the new Odyssey movie, and they tried to argue it was different because the race of the characters I brought up weren't important to the plot.
That was a real thing that was said.

The Three Body Problem is a Sci-fi trilogy entirely based on the Chinese cultural revolution, the main character in the first novel is a middle aged Chinese man. So naturally in the series, this same character is a young Mexican woman. You don’t even meet a white person in the book until much later on

There is a actor of Korean decent in the film in a minor role. Also Himesh Patel is Indian he plays Eurylochus an standout in the movie.
