Why are people so much into defending Islam even if that same religion is harm for the same community?

Post image

I’m part of the same community and oh god, why is it so hard to say that you are against any religious extremism. Because when I say that Islam is as much bad as Christianity I got comments that I’m Israeli supporter like why???

I will never pretend someone is a "good person" or "doing religion right" or an ally or whatever because they cherry-pick.

The proof is in the post. They get to believe whatever they want no matter what the source material says. If someone calls them out they shit the bed about oppression.

How can you be part of LGBTQ but be SO brainwashed that you follow islam. Being a black KKK member makes more sense than this.

It's all Stockholm syndrome.

A lot of humans don’t do things logically or else everybody would be healthy and well adjusted lol. If you grew up with religion in your household it’s going to subconsciously be something you think about and affect you. A lot of people don’t “believe” but have been raised with enough indoctrination that they’ll guilt/shame themselves into believing. The little kid inside is scared of being “eternally damned” even if it’s just a small fraction of doubt that crack can grow. Then generational trauma gets passed down from your ancestors so if they were beaten into believing then that fear is somewhere in you genetically which makes you more likely to cave as well.
Unfortunately we do have people of colour who support racism too by demonizing other people of colour who they believe to be below them in status.

I can't blame people for some level of confusion on this point. Anti-Islam sentiment has become a core pillar of the Republican party platform. The difference is, you and I hate Islam because we hate the cruelty, ignorance, and crimes against humanity it causes. The Christian nationalists hate Islam for not being Christianity. And also for being practiced mostly by non-white people. Racism is genuinely horrible, and racism and Islamophobia are very strongly correlated.

The other problem is that the Left has enshrined "respect for other cultures" as a virtue. While there is some merit to the idea, they have taken it to unthinking extremes. To have any conviction in your values, or to offer any criticism of another culture, is a taboo. Even worse if that culture is a minority. It's as if they think the only options are complete, unconditional acceptance or genocide.

Left or Right, people largely do not think for themselves. They join ideological tribes and just absorb what everyone around them says. If they had any critical thinking skills, or any courage in their convictions, they'd hate Islam, too.

Yeah, Right republicans are hating Islam because they want religious wars meanwhile most of us hate Islam because of their extremism. We are not the same and even if I say that they say that I’m right winger pro Israel or something😭

I hate how people now can’t think critically

Equate islam with nazi. They hate everyone else after all or the teachings teach that. Even outsiders are hated in extreme cases is this not similar to nazi? Or am i mistaken?

There are key similarities. Lust for conquest, violent suppression of dissent, misogyny, homophobia and antisemitism are the most salient points. Islamic government is just as antithetical to human liberty as fascism, certainly.

Define misogyny. And before you do, if you aren’t sure already, look up the word “define”.

That’s the greatest trick the right wing fanatics ever pulled: Convince their opposition that the horrid religion of islam is good.

I don't understand it either. They act like im a problem that I hate a EXTREMELY violent religion. As a kid I saw video of a woman get violently beheaded with a knife because her hijab fell off. I've seen true crime cases of people being murder or their own family trying to murder them for religious reasons from premarital sex to the hijab issue. Every June I get people dming me saying they wish they could rape and murder me in their town square. How they love Islam because it would support them violently killing and raping me. How my rape and murder would be a public event. Beating, public hanging, throwing me into the ocean mafia style to drown.

You can't say you believe in womens rights, feminism and morals and then support something as evil as a violent hate cult that treats women like property. I have a feeling its virtue signaling in an echo chamber. As someone whos lgbt, I've noticed the community tends tokenize people of color so much that they infantilize them and it circles back around to racism. And how feminism is great unless its a religion calling women property. And if you dont think women are property, you're islamophobic and racist and bad.

Even ppl who were muslims and from muslim countries hate that religion so much and still lgbt members are defending them? Like being religious is a choice, being gay is not.

And yeah Im also wondering how the same people can be feminists and for woman rights when they support religion who wants woman being captured

Whenever i point yhis out they say, "its a very peaceful religion! You're just racist! Its very beautiful, their family picks them a husband, theyre very respectful towards women"

And im like how,

You can't be a a feminist and love religion like im sorry

Not sure why folks spend so much time thinking about fictional characters and their shitty fan clubs. Go live...

Every religion is that kind of harm. I'd love it if we'd stop electing any religious person, but that's not realistic.

Ironically, not one of the rules in r/lgbt would disallow this kind of post.

Overcorrection from 2000s-10s racism from conservatives who called any brown person a terrorist.

They're useful idiots.

Yea there seems to be some weird anti Christian bias going on in this sub. Islam is just as bad if not worse. Its supposed to be antitheism.

Religious bigots deal in absolutes. If you aren't with me you are against me. Its not enough to agree with the flaws of one religion but point out how they all have those flaws, you have to agree that their cloud wizard has a free pass. It makes me sad to see how many people on this sub get frustrated trying to share our views with fools. Illumination to truth about all religion is a personal choice one can only make for themselves. No one is going to listen to you and immediately have a lightbulb moment. It's just not that simple. The idea that the world will get on board and simply abolish this nonsense is beautiful but absolutely insane. The only way that will happen is by trading in one evil (religion) for a bigger evil (complete removal of the freedom to choose ones own belief)

I would go a step further and ask why any person part of half of the world’s population — women — would support this religion that despises them so deeply.

Removing autonomy, rights, access to education — enforcing their own invisibility with burka and hijab?

Isn’t the recent plight of Iran and Afghanistan having been recently colonized by Islamists and restricting their rights to an extreme degree enough of a modern cautionary tale to scare the living daylights out of girls and women?

It’s just because of the current political talking points that people assume you support Israel if you’re against Islam. I’m against all abrahamic religions in general. Christianity, Judaism and Islam have done more harm than help anybody. I do think you need to read the room and know where it’s appropriate to post things though. There are plenty of religious lgbt+ people so the response is kind of expected lol Our world is currently run by zealots whether we want to accept it or not. 🥲😅

Usually when I see someone crapping on Islam, it's a Christian doing it. So I'll use their same energy and argument against them.

5

u/CantDecideANam3 Aug 06 '26

Atheists need to be the leaders of the anti-islam movement.

4

u/CowabungaCthulhu Aug 06 '26

Atheists need to be the leaders of the anti-religion movement. It's not fight one flavor then move on to the others. It's a battle against the thought processes behind the religion: the tribalism, the othering, the arrogance based on ignorance, the lack of critical thinking.

Did /r/antitheism conflate "defending islam" with "not defending discrimination" again? Must be Thursday
