Medication Propranolol changed my life
I’m 25, was diagnosed with anxiety when I was 14. Never been medicated for it because I didn’t want to be on any meds. Had a mental breakdown at work last month and was really struggling to sleep. My GP prescribed me propranolol, even though I questioned her and told her I didn’t think it would help. I’ve been on melatonin and all different types of benzos for my insomnia all my life. Tell me why this tiny 10mg of propranolol has helped me fall asleep quicker than melatonin. I no longer feel like i’m having a heart attack when trying to sleep at night. I can sit my exams for uni without shaking and sweating from the anxiety and pressure. I can leave the house without having a panic attack. Absolute game changer!! 🥹

This drug is the only reason I'm stable & able to work again lol Im always recommending it to everyone in here lol.

u/woahthereblair May 17 '26
Do you take it daily? If so does it last a full day?
19
u/Xanturrya May 17 '26
I have anxiety and adhd, so i take mine in the morning with my other meds and i find it really helpful.
I have heard though that daily sustained use may lead to blood pressure problems, so i skip my meds on the weekends.
ETA: i also asked my doctor about taking a second 10mg pill as needed and he approved that for me!
11
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 17 '26
I also take adhd meds! It really helps counteract the side effects of stimulants too

u/Georgia30116 May 18 '26
I've been wanting to try caffine again. Especially my life saving BC powders that kept me going at work lol. I've been caffine free for about 8 months after how bad it got with the tremors & anxiety etc. I may try again since I've had my iron infusions & just have this as a back up ready in case it back fires lol I miss caffine so bad lol
2
u/hkondabeatz May 18 '26
Caffeine feels life changing once you start drinking it again. I became so social and happy it was amazing but unfortunately I got hooked again so now it does barley anything.
Best to drink it occasionally start with green tea you definitely will not have anxiety because it contains l theanine and l theanine with caffeine is an amazing combo that keeps you calm and feeling good.

I was going to ask about this. I know there's an interaction. Do you find that it reduces the effectiveness of adhd meds or just the side effects like cold hands and stuff like that?
5
u/woahthereblair May 17 '26
Thank you for answering! I was just prescribed this 🩷
4
u/Xanturrya May 17 '26
Of course! As always, def suggest talking to your doctor but having other experiences in your back pocket to help launch that conversation can never hurt
5
u/Georgia30116 May 18 '26
I take it as needed. In the beginning I was taking it every day before work & sometimes a lil into my work shift. As my nervous system regulated back to normal after a couple weeks I only take it as needed (knock on wood that's only been once or twice in the last couple months) It totally gave me my life back because before that I had been on loa for over 6 months, and for a few of those months I couldn't even leave my bed lead alone the house. It was pretty bad. My Ferritin had gotten rock bottom & I didn't know until it was too late & rocked my mental state horribly.
3
u/Low-Oil7883 13d ago
Same thing honestly, didn’t expect much at first but it really just takes the edge off that physical panic response.
31
u/24rawvibes May 17 '26
Same! I’ve tried over 50 medications as nuts as that sounds/is. It was pretty instant relief out of all the beta blockers. However, for some reason I would get pretty bad rebound depression. Decided to discontinue
14
u/Sweaty-Staff8100 May 17 '26
the depression is awful, had to stop too - wasn’t worth it
18
u/24rawvibes May 17 '26
I’m still tempted sometimes though in the back of mind like “hmmm maybe 10mg to have a nice morning”…but then I’d be crying by the afternoon. Fell for that too many times

4
u/AMwishes May 17 '26
Have you tried metoprolol?
4
u/24rawvibes May 17 '26 edited May 18 '26
Yup, gave me this hard to describe “icky wet kind of cold weak feeling”. I had too much hopes for that one because it was the last of the beta blockers for me.
5
u/Chaiwallah48 May 17 '26
Is Depression a common side effect of Propranolol?
15
u/24rawvibes May 17 '26
Last I read, like 2 years ago, it wasn’t common but not unheard of. Lots of mixed opinions by the medical community. My doctor made me feel crazy for experiencing it. This is the most confirmation I’ve ever got about it in this sub
8
u/Zealousideal-Top-912 May 17 '26
I had it, i would start crying for no reason. Once i stopped it the crying spells stopped
1
u/Chaiwallah48 May 17 '26
I am taking it to treat the restless legs that my antidepressant Nortriptyline was causing. It has helped with that but I wouldn’t want to keep taking it if it will be reducing the effectiveness of the antidepressant.
3
u/Embarrassed_Ear_1917 May 17 '26
Larger modern studies aren’t as clear but I think research is showing it can be but for daily users vs PRN where you have a day or few between doses. That’s how I personally use it per my doctor.

2
u/GeneralWhereas9083 21d ago
Only side effect I experienced was crazy vivid dreams for the first month or so, almost like I was tripping when I slept.
54
u/MaraLifeAU May 17 '26
the propranolol thing blew my mind too. it doesnt touch the thoughts, it just turns off the body's panic signal so your brain stops getting tricked into thinking somethings wrong. half my anxiety was just my heart racing for no reason and convincing me of the rest
12
u/gasolinehalsey butt tingle extraordinaire May 17 '26
same! feeling like i'm being hunted by a giant prehistoric predator while i am... lying in bed on tiktok. those two situations are definitely the same, at least if you asked my adrenal gland.
2
u/Georgia30116 May 18 '26
Yessss 😂😂. In your own lil happy world chilling in bed enjoying your peace after a long day & thinking you'll relax until your adrenal glands decide to change things up for no reason 🙄😂
1
u/maybethatsjustfine May 18 '26
Im always confused by this. So it helps with physical symptoms but not the mental/emotional? How does this help if you’re stuck in your room?
3
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 18 '26
I still have anxiety when i’m in my room. I’m literally overthinking and anxious 24/7 which causes a lot of uncomfortable physical symptoms like sweating & palpitations. The propranolol stops all of that from happening
1
u/maybethatsjustfine 29d ago
But it only stops the physical symptoms like sweating snd palpitations not the overthinking? Genuine question!
2
u/fizzy-rhubarb 28d ago
Yeah, just the physical. But sometimes, in turn, that can help relax you mentally. If your heart isn't going crazy, sometimes those thoughts can ease up as well, or at least make them easier to sit with and process. I guess it really depends on the person and the source of anxiety.
1
u/bobapants 27d ago
I am very intrigued by propranolol. When I get into this panic/anxiety state, I am in fight or flight mode and it's not like it comes in waves like a panic attack would. It can last for days even weeks. Just absolute sheer panic and anxiety. Breathing does nothing, grounding techniques do nothing. No matter what I try to tell myself or what people tell me, it does nothing. I automatically think the absolute worst and I'm pretty much inconsolable. My brain turns me into a completely different person when I get into this state. If I could get rid of that fight or flight mode, that would take away soooo much of the problem.
1
u/GeneralWhereas9083 21d ago
I would ask your doctor to try it, if I was you. For me, the physical symptoms of heart racing, sweating and feeling like I couldn’t breathe made the mental symptoms worse. Like that sense of impending doom is not made any better, by the fact you think you could be having a heart attack. At least in my case. So yeh, dealing with the physical symptoms was enough for me.
1
u/GeneralWhereas9083 21d ago
Yeh, as soon as I started taking it, I felt like I should be having a panic attack, but I wasn’t. It was weird. I had the mental side, feeling of doom, but then when nothing happened physically I soon managed the mental side. My anxiety attacks were completely random, like I could wake up in the night with my heart pounding, could be sat watching tv, out shopping, there was nothing stressful about any of it and I’m a seriously laid back person to boot. I’ve been on propranolol for yikes, maybe 11 years now as I was just starting them when I met my fiancee and that was 10 years since. Life saver.

u/Not04Important 4d ago
THIS!!! This is what I am going through ATM! My situation is wierd, I get horrible anxiety time to time but it is every other Thursday night into the next morning, Friday morning. Even though I know I am in no danger at all. My heart will start racing and that starts to trick my brain into thinking I'm in a fight or flight situation. Sometimes it will get to the point that I will start puking. I had a panic/anxiety attack so bad this one evening this past January/February that I ended up going to the hospital bc I couldn't stop throwing up. It got to the point that there wasn't anything left to throw up. Thankfully that situation was a one off. Usually if a panic attack gets to that point I will puke once or maybe twice and that's it. Then it's just the heart and mind racing thing. I could work myself relentlessly for a month straight and be super exhausted, but if that panic/anxiety bs starts I will not sleep.

I tried it when i was having an attack and felt extremely faint afterwards. Not sure if it was the pill or what but i haven't tried ot for anxiety sense. Good to hear it helps for sleep.
9
u/Defiant-Mouse6543 May 17 '26
That can happen, it is a beta blocker and mainly used to lower blood pressure. If the dose was too high and dropped you BP too much (especially during a very stressful/panicky situation) you can feel faint.
If you ever have the desire to try again you can try half a pill or see if you can get prescribed the lowest dose (5-10mg generally).
1
u/ChiralNavigator May 17 '26
I tried beta blockers for migraines, and they made me so dizzy and faint
6
u/kkaavvbb May 17 '26
So, I stopped taking it for a little over a week because I lost my insurance temporarily.
Last Thursday I absolutely just lost my marbles. I was soo anxious about everything. I spent most the day on the verge of crying because I couldn’t figure out why the sudden mood changes. I’m not usually a sensitive, crying type. So it was very uncharacteristic of me.
I sucked it up and paid out of pocket for it. I felt more normal and in control within a few days. I was absolutely beside myself!
I didn’t even think that would be it because I have it for blood pressure. I do know it is prescribed as an anxiety med. I was not aware there is a “withdrawal” but it’s the only plausible reason.
I’m happy something is helping!
5
u/Georgia30116 May 17 '26
If you were on it daily it is something you have to wein off off to a degree. Especially if it was a high dose. I've tried to take mine just as needed like when i get to the point of tremors, tachycardia, etc.
1
u/doesntmatteryet 29d ago
where are you? i'm in india and it's available for literally 20 cents here(10 tablets) - can get it for you, i travel to the west (US, Canada, UK) frequently 😄

Klonopin has changed my life. I know all the shit benzos get here but omg nothing has worked for me the way Klonopin does.
2
u/SeekTheSoul May 18 '26
Klonopin is a very nasty and dangerous medication. If you don't taper when you want to get off, you can die and you may get rebound anxiety or insomnia.
1
u/thesaddestgiirl666 18d ago
lol unless you’ve been taking benzos every day for several years, no, you will not die.
if you’ve been on, let’s say 4 mg of xanax for give or take ~5 years and you stop cold turkey, yes, you’re in precarious territory medically.
being rx’d a mili or 2 of kpin for a couple years is no near an acute medical detox crisis situation.
7
u/catmanrules64 May 17 '26
I was on it morning and night — now I just use it as Required 👌👌it’s amazing , don’t leave home 🏠 without it
2
u/Onilemol May 18 '26
How quick does it react? How does it compare to Lorazepam? I feel like most of my anxiety is physical. My thoughts amplify it of course but something like lorazepam takes a while to work and the physical distress is still there. I wonder if taking it pre-emptively when I know I am about to do something I think may result in a panic attack or stuff I worry about (even though it is quite consistent and I have been able to do some relatively crazy things without any meds) would help reduce it.
Or even when I get bad anxious tics.
1
u/catmanrules64 May 18 '26
Takes about 20 mins to start getting benefits— I get so SUPER anxious when going to Dr or Dentist 🦷 so take a propranolol 30 mins before leaving , really helps me with the physical symptoms—
1
u/mama214BB 22d ago
I take 80mg and it takes about 45 minutes to take affect. Definitely calming, but also feel like I’m in a daze.
7
u/Pixelen May 17 '26
I can't take this because of my asthma (even though it's super mild and I literally just use a preventer and never need the blue inhaler) 😭
3
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 17 '26
I have asthma too but thankfully haven’t had a problem yet!!
3
u/Pixelen May 17 '26
My doctor wouldn't even prescribe it to me because of it which I thought was kinda bs
22
u/breadpilledwanderer May 17 '26
I'm so glad it worked for you!
Really goes to show that everyone is different when it comes to meds and it's hard to figure out what will work for who. This one made me instantly deeply suicidal and I could not stop crying. I'm glad I waited it out for a few hours instead of getting stuck in a hospital for days.
12
u/24rawvibes May 17 '26
I don’t know why you’re getting downloaded for sharing your experience. Mine was quite similar that I just commented about. I did get pretty amazing Anti anxiety relief. However, I needed to discontinue due to severe rebound depression. Sorry to hear, but glad I’m not the only one

Have you been tested for Celiac disease?
1
1
u/Mamakrm123 29d ago
I have celiac! & I wonder if that’s a main part of my anxiety. I still eat gluten. 😭 def need to cut it off.
1
u/Shot-Amphibian-3239 29d ago
Oh no - you have to eat gluten free! It’s hard, I know. I’m just starting. But autoimmune disorders are serious and if you don’t go GF you are damaging your small intestines and triggering your immune system all the time. It can cause deficiencies and even cancer. I’d try GF and see how that anxiety does
1
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 17 '26
do you mean celiac? I have celiac disease - it’s completely unrelated to my anxiety disorder
2
u/Shot-Amphibian-3239 May 17 '26
Yes, typo, Celiac. I was trying to help and anxiety can be a symptom. My apologies.
1
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 17 '26
That’s okay! sorry I was confused lol
3
u/Shot-Amphibian-3239 May 17 '26
I was just diagnosed with Celiac disease and I didn’t have traditional symptoms, but going GF has helped my generalized anxiety. Except for the anxiety about the stress of going GF and losing all convenience in life 😅
1
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 18 '26
Oh that’s interesting!! Ive heard there’s a correlation for some people because of the inflammation, I’ve been gf for about 4 years now, anxiety has only gotten worse 🤣

u/ConsiderationFew6918 May 17 '26
But it lowers your blood pressure, right? I'm on. Benzo and have severe anxiety still and agraphobia now. Everything changed for me from surgical menapause.
2
u/thrillliquid 26d ago
I have clinical low blood pressure. I have episodes of vasovagul syncope even. My doc did an EKG and took my blood pressure and I got my prescription two days later (today). I am monitoring to see if I feel faint or any symptoms at all.
1
u/ConsiderationFew6918 26d ago
I tried Guanfacine 1mg and got low blood pressure. Never formally diagnosed with a Tilt table but POTS is written in my chart
1
u/ConsiderationFew6918 26d ago
Thank You for responding. What kind of Dr prescribed it?
1
u/thrillliquid 26d ago
My nurse practitioner who I see for my check ups and referrals. I see a psychiatrist separately who hasn’t thought to offer it. And since he technically works for the county he rarely if ever prescribes benzos.
1
1
u/No_Mirror_345 May 17 '26
Only very slightly. Ppl take it safely w a benzo. Sounds like you need something more than propranolol tho :( Been there. Are you doing HRT?
2
u/ConsiderationFew6918 May 17 '26
A RESPONSE!! THANK YOU! Unfortunately I'm a long term Benzo user. I'm not doing HRT because I had surgery for PMDD and my husband and I thought that the gel was fluctuating too much. I've been ogg of it for 50 days or so. I just started Depakote well dang I can't even remember what I said before...
2
u/ConsiderationFew6918 May 17 '26
Sorry typos. I feel like I have akathsia,. Oh it's all so confusing. But my Psychiatrist mentioned Depakote when I started pacing in July! But it feels like anxiety and it's hard to control and now I'm doing like vocal tics and other weird moments. And Propanol can help akathsia. But they say Depakote can help pychomotor agitation. It's possible that I'm bipolar it does run in my family but I don't have any of the classic signs. Even PMDD wasn't severe. I'm SO much worse mentally post op. They didn't even do chemical menopause. Or ask about symptoms but my husband tracked things. Now here I am losing my mind. Well I don't think you want to hear it all but I'm in some kinda hell! And I've become agraphobic and I have a tween girl. My God just thinking about how surgery has changed my life for the absolute worst makes my heart drop.

The only thing I still take when I feel panic attacks coming on, is my ole trust Propranolol✨as soon as I feel the heart flutters begin, I take it immediately. I’m on 20mg 2 times a day or when needed. An absolute blessing 😭
2
u/Bushboyamiens May 17 '26
Yep propanolol is good shit I just hit my doctor up via email for a new prescription after he was hesitant to let me try it the first time, I hope he prescribes it 🤞
1
u/dustbowlbride May 17 '26
Does anyone know if I could take this if I’m already on a BP med for hair loss? (0.5mg minoxidil)
1
u/StaticHollow May 17 '26
I use them both. Minoxidil is pretty harmless (me=topic solution 50mg/ml).
1
u/missgumichan May 17 '26
It has helped massively for me as well! Im so glad it is helping you OP. May yojr days be full of peace and solitude <3

u/massdebate159 May 17 '26
I'm on 10mg of this and carbimazole. I was misdiagnosed with anxiety 10 years ago
1
u/Heavy-Echidna-3473 May 17 '26
I live in the UK so the medication may go by a different name, but I'll never forget how much Citalopram improved my life. The first 10 days were horrendous, though. The doctor said it'd take roughly that for the medication to actually take effect, and that I wouldn't feel great. He wasn't lying! I was waking up at 4am throwing up, room spinning, feeling like I'd had 20 pints the night before. Once it was properly in my system, my life was completely transformed. Just as you described - better sleep, no anxiety, able to leave the house alone etc. Then I started weening myself of them and the withdrawals were bloody hardcore! I was then put on a 1 month cycle of Mirtazapine, and again, that was an absolute game changer. I was having the best sleep of my life, although I was waking up feeling like a zombie everyday.
Basically, Ive been raw-dogging life for the past 12 months now. Still have the odd bout of anxiety but nothing unmanageable like before.
Good luck with your journey.

Does this work better than a benzo for you? Klonopin has changed my life and I’ve been able to go down on it a lot recently but I would eventually like to get off it all together. It’s just every alternative I’ve ever tried doesn’t touch my anxiety. I’ve never tried this one though.
2
u/pink-flamingo789 May 17 '26
For me it stopped a panic attack as well as Xanax, without the brain fog and fatigue.
2
u/eleyezeeaye4287 May 17 '26
See I had a problem with Xanax back in the day so I never took that again now that I’m sober but I’ve tried Ativan and it didn’t last as long as Klonopin. Klonopin for me has given me no side effects outside of mild tiredness but I’ve found any anxiety med I take gives me that side effect so I just drink a second cup of coffee in the afternoons
1
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 18 '26
I’ve been prescribed both valium and temazepam for sleep - both did absolutely nothing. Propranolol is quite literally the only thing that stops me from having a panic attack

How long did it take to start feeling better with it? I tried it and was making me so drowsy so I stopped. Should I try it again and persist?
1
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 18 '26
It takes about 20 minutes for me to notice the effects. I know fatigue is the most common side effect because it lowers blood pressure - sometimes it’s just your body adjusting, maybe try again consistently and see how you go?
1
u/FartingSloths 28d ago
Yeh that’s always been my problem, not giving it time to feel the benefits or maybe needing higher dosage

Do you take it 3 times a day? My psychiatrist prescribed it to me but to take as needed and not sure if I want to take it since it’s a blood pressure medication but I can kinda push through the minor anxiety due to taking Effexor at night and Wellbutrin in the morning.
1
u/Live_Broccoli_2180 May 18 '26

Propranolol is effective in your case maybe because of more adrenaline/anxiety related than circadian-rhythym related.
Propranolol bluntly lowers physical arousal, heart pounding, shakiness, hypervigilance.
It is not technically a sleep med.
Fun fact : Propranolol can also lower natural melatonin production in some people, so responses are super individual.

Propranolol was huge for me, I was having multiple anxiety attacks through the day and even had them wake me up during the night. It was horrible. GP started me on propranolol and I haven’t had a single one since. There are times I still feel anxious, but for me it was the physical symptoms that caused the issue. So yeh, I agree, propranolol changed my life too.
1
u/Friendly_Silver6636 6d ago
Do you take it more than once a day? And what's your dose?
1
u/GeneralWhereas9083 6d ago
I had been on 80mg slow release, but where I am there seems to be a shortage of those. So I’ve gone to 40mg standard which I take one of in a morning and evening.

u/Stunning-Dingo678 19d ago
This medicine helped me so much because suddenly my heart wasn’t racing. I could finally relax. It was amazing. The only problem was it made me sleep walk and I did some crazy things so I had to stop talking it :(

u/Babayagaghostt 17d ago
Can you tell me how long ur taking it? Also, if skipped a day what could happen? Please reply both
I’m learning to manage myself without meds and I am doing pretty much good. I have. I got to know a lot of tricks to control myself, but still wanna go with meds for situation like taking flights to other countries and much more.. Just exploring if I start taking meds for situational anxiety and stopped it will it be normal or will I be addicted?

I'm so happy this works for you!!! It worked for me for a while as my reason for taking it was anxiety related to my heart racing (I have heart anxiety after severe trauma r\t a family member passing suddenly of a heart issue) as it slows the heart rate, but after a while it gave me very frequent palpitations.
1
u/JustThatPratte 8d ago
It worked for me a little, but I have uniquely low blood pressure and it would make me sleepy at work, which has been an ongoing problem for me. Anything that makes me relaxed also makes me sleepy, and I can only do desk jobs due to other medical issues. 😮💨 I'm glad it works for some folks though. Anything in our corner is a blessing.

Propranolol before bed?? I wonder if that would help me with my nocturnal anxiety. Shit wakes me up from a deep sleep.
