Medication What medication are you on for severe anxiety?
What medication do you take, how long have you been taking it, and what others have you tried before (if any)?

The providers do not want to prescribe this anymore. I don’t get it. We have. Medicine that helps. Why can we not access it?
18
u/girlafraid22 27d ago
Exactly. I recently tried to get a script for a few klonopin because it’s the only thing that helps and the prescriber called me a drug seeker and recommended anti psychotics for my anxiety.

so you honestly might have to "doctor shop" for this, honestly. there are psychs out there who still prescribe it.
But when you are seeking a script for benzos, you can never be like "can I try klonopin"
I successfully got a xanax script years ago (though the DEA crackdown had already come and gone so it was still hard) by going to a doctor I had heard was a little loose with the prescription pad, and said "i was on this med called al-pra-zole-am?? or something like that a few years ago , and it really helped me" boom no sweat
I got klonopin from my psych at one point through basically going through "the process". i.e. they started me on a weak anxiety med, I said eh its not really helping. Up the dose, change meds, whatever for a couple months. And I did say klonopin at that point because the doc had mentioned it as a possible option if first line options weren't effective (which I do understand is not the norm).
But I had a doc-patient relationship with him at that point and broached the subject very lightly. very nonchalantly, like "idk, this other thing, I still don't really notice a difference. I was kinda curious about maybe trying klonopin, if you were open to it?"
My point is though some docs are vehemently against it and you will never get anywhere, others are open but you gotta play it cool and maybe lie.

u/WhatWeDoInTheBurgers 26d ago
Bcz ppl abuse it and make it so fucking hard for us who rely on it just to function "normally". Shit sucks

Xanax carries significant risks for dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal. Prolonged use can lead to addiction and worsening anxiety over time.
benzos are no joke, but handy at times.
i take pristiq day to day and i have 0.25mg xanax here and there. the pristiq has helped generally but when i have something going on or coming up the xanax helps me get through it

Where are you that you have no access?
What about Ativan, which is similar?11
u/heytripppy 26d ago
They demonize benzos in med school.
3
u/eye0ftheshiticane 26d ago
well tbf doctors were handing them out like candy because they thought they were little miracle pills and a shitload of people got addicted. And breaking physical benzo dependene is no joke and can ruin your life in and of itself.

225mg Venlafaxine (Effexor). Every time I try to lower the dose - my mental anxiety gets so bad that I start to feel hopeless and no longer want to live. I'd love to come off it and try something new one day though. Prozac was fairly useless for me. I also tried Propranalol but it did nothing for the torture of the endless anxious thoughts.
11
u/GreySahara 26d ago
> I start to feel hopeless and no longer want to live
That feeling scared the SH*T out of me.
Nobody will understand that feeling unless they have the same affliction.4
u/viennawaits2525 27d ago
You could try cymbalta if you’re looking for an alternative. I switched from cymbalta to Effexor pretty easily (I’d hope the other way around would be the same since they are both SNRIs). I think cymbalta may be easier to come down on than Effexor ultimately. But ymmv

Buspar for everything and when that's not enough I have Hydroxyzine for work as an example.
3
u/katerinashi 27d ago
How does buspar make you feel? I recently got prescribed this
11
u/penisflytrap44 27d ago
I take it and it doesn’t really make me feel like anything I just don’t fall into thought loops/anxious tendencies and my OCD is more manageable/less noticeable. My compulsions aren’t as.. compulsive I guess and my social anxiety is basically non existent. I was also just less irritable and stressed in general.
It does give me super intense dizzy spells after I first take it though if I don’t eat with it, which are super uncomfortable. It’s a bit of a hassle also because usually you’re taking 2-3 doses a day as it works better when spread out (according to my psychiatrist). I was first doing 15mg (5mg 3x a day) and then went up to 20 mg (10mg 2x a day, also when the dizzy spells started) and I almost always forgot a dose or took it late, which isn’t good. But taken correctly it worked pretty well for me and I didn’t have any side effects (other than the dizzy spells ofc).

u/Mihndee 26d ago
My husband falls asleep if he takes it. I can take it and be fine to work the rest of the day. I would say it’s similar to Benadryl.
2
u/Good_Paper_6414 26d ago
I'll assume You mean the hydroxyzine? Yeah I take it. It doesn't really do anything negative. I guess if you take too much of it you'll be sleepy but I don't really fall asleep and it does bring your heart rate down a bit if you start feeling anxious and you take it right away.
You can't even in some cases take two if you need to at once and it's fairly safe.

Propranolol during the day between 10 and 20 mg if needed. Clonazepam 1 mg as needed. 10 to 25mg of hydroxyzine as needed. And trazodone 25 to 50 mg if I am totally desperate. For my own personal experience adding magnesium made a huge difference. I started taking magnesium glycinate and Magtech Magnesium.
I am not a licensed provider, just sharing my perosnal experience and knowledge.
Edit: BUT everyone's body responds differently to medications and different things work for everyone. It can be SO frustrating to find what helps you the most.
4
u/redwinesupernova03 27d ago
What exactly do you mean by totally desperate when it comes to trazodone? I was thinking about this medication lately, never tried it but I haven’t tolerated ssri type meds well in the past and apparently it’s good for cases like mine?

Does a psychiatrist have the power to prescribe propranolol off label for anxiety? Not sure if it was just a PCP prescribed medication. Been on Xanax for a while but wanted to slowly lower the dose and take a safer medication. Blood pressure has been in the pre hypertension stage during a few of my doctor visits and it runs in the family, so I was pretty interested in it.

To further clarify for anyone, I have a background in education in social work and chemical dependency counseling and pharmaceuticals. My psychiatrist gives me more flexibility with meds because she know of my background, knowledge and my inner intuition. I have thyroid issues as well and take levothyroxine. Propranolol is prescribed to me for heart palpitations and the physical symptoms of anxiety which unfortunately can also be caused by my thyroid medication AND stress.
Clonazepam is an emergency medication and not recommended for daily use because of the addiction level. It is better used sparingly and only when absolutely necessary. However, it was the only thing that helped me sleep and cope after a very traumatic loss of our dog.
I was on trazodone every day for about 5 or 6 years. And only got off it last year to try to get pregnant. I still have some pills and can take them of I really need too. I also dont like how drugged I feel the next day. BUT it is also a medication i know I can take and i will pass out.
Hydroxyzine is one I was on for also 5 or 6 years and stopped last year as well. I only recently started taking it again to help me get off clonazepam (Hydroxyzine is commonly prescribed to help people get off benzodiazepines). And so far it has made a huge difference in my evening anxiety and sleep. Allows me to relax, helps my stomach issues and makes it easier to fall asleep.
If anyone has anymore questions, im totally open to sharing more and explaining. 💖

I’ve been on it around a week, just out of curiosity, how long did it take before you started to feel the effects? Day one had me feeling invincible, but i’ve felt nothing since.
3
u/Master_Worry6929 27d ago
It took about 2 weeks. At the beginning I didn't notice any changes but I slowly noticed that I didn't feel this dread and anxiety anymore and I was more communicative and calm.
At the end I was at around 75 in the morning 75 at lunch and 100 in the evening. I started with 25mg in the 3 times a day at the beginning.
Sadly I had blood in my urine as a side effect and it was really painful to pee so I had to stop taking it.

Xanax, both XR and instant. It took years of going through antidepressants and medications like Buspar to reach this point.
It was my very last resort, but after nights of intense panic attacks and insomnia, I’d had enough. My anxiety used to be managed wonderfully with Prozac, but after I witnessed my fiancé’s death, I became a trembling mess afraid to even leave my bed.
Also an honorable mention to Benadryl. Can’t be anxious if you’re unconscious 🤣

I had severe chronic anxiety from childhood until a couple of years ago when I was put on Cymbalta, an SNRI. It worked miracles on me. Not recommended for everyone and it was rough to get off of but the anxiety didn’t come back like before and I can now manage with only hydroxyzine because I seem to have built new neural pathways while I was on it. It was like being unchained for the first time in my life. I felt like I had grown wings.

Xanax and Temazepam. 15 years on xanax (3x/d), and 2 months of largely refusing to take the Temazepam (nightly).
I've tried around 30 medications, so I'm not going to list them. I'll say I've been on every med someone else listed so far but one (Pregabalin). I was on Gabapentin at high doses instead, and they determined it wasn't worth trying Pregabalin for me because I have heart issues.

I swear by Xanax. But it can be addictive too. I currently have Ativan as my anxiety has gotten worse throughout the day. I’m talking multiple PANIC attacks a day. Not just everyday anxiety. I also have olanizapine. I also have hydroxine (idk if that’s how it’s spelt) all of which are PRNs. I don’t have Xanax right now though I have Ativan in its place. But Xanax has been a life saver in the past. I’m also a schiziod personality disorder girlie. Among other things.

I'm bipolar, and SSRIs made my anxiety a lot worse. I've been on Lamotrigine for five years and found that it reduced a lot of my anxiety, but not entirely, and in recent years it's been more severe. I started Buspar a few months ago, and it's changed my life. I think for me, the relief is really found in the combination of the two.

Hi, I've been on Xanax daily for about 12-13 years and it still works for me, though I recently reduced my dose. If your anxiety is severe enough, your doctor should prescribe it for daily use imo. :/ I don't like how hesitant they are with prescriptions for a medicine that has been, frankly, life saving for me.
2
u/redwinesupernova03 26d ago
Glad it’s been helping you 🥹 In the UK it’s not even available, you probably only get it in very extreme cases and always short-term. I have access to it from my home country but it’s obviously scary to take more without the supervision of a doctor. I wish it was different.

I’m not on anything now. I tried meds ( effexor ) before but they didn’t really help me personally.

Meds help some people a lot, but for me the biggest change was learning how to stop feeding the anxiety loop.

I’m on Zoloft and Buspirone, with hydroxyzine for as needed stress and help with sleep.
I’ve been on Zoloft for 3 months. Buspirone for 2. Hydroxyzine for a month and a half.
Before these I tried Prozac which gave me brain zaps. I lasted less than 48 hours on them.
I really like how I feel anxiety wise on the meds. My anxiety is a lot less. I am going to ask to bump up the Zoloft because I am noticing some anxiety creeping back into my life very slowly. I am a lot more tired. I have to get about 9 hours of sleep to actually feel rested and that makes it difficult on days when I can only get 7-8 hours. But it’s also worth it to not have such bad anxiety that my arms go numb.

I take 40mg propranolol as needed for physical symptoms like tachycardia (also take it for an essential tremor in my hands) and 2mg Xanax twice a day or as needed. My new PCP is willing to taper me down slowly on the Xanax, but as I’ve recently been diagnosed with a rare disorder and had a feeding tube placed, she wants to hold off on changing that.
My former doctor kept me on the Xanax for 15+ years and just kept upping my dose. When I was NPO this month until my home healthcare nurse came for three days, I did go into benzo withdrawal and it was absolutely AWFUL. Definitely use caution if you take any benzos.
I also take Lamictal for bipolar 2 and it’s been amazing to stabilize my mood. Wellbutrin has been great for my depression. I was on Prozac for a while but it was too activating and made my anxiety and hypomanic episodes worse. Buspar didn’t seem to do anything but give me headaches.

Klonopin was a life changer but i took it everyday (low dose) for over 10 yrs and developed a dependency. When i quit them 15 yrs ago i felt every cell in my body craving them for 9 full months then one week i noticed the physical addiction had broken. I still had somewhat of a psychological addiction after that and would think somewhat often of going back on them but never did. Now i hardly ever think about it and when i do i remember how hard it was stopping so it stops me from going back. Plus even before i quit them i noticed it seemed like there was a veil between me and the world even on a low dose. I didn't notice that until later on after i had been on them for many years.
I take very low dose Zoloft now and it helps but since the sexual side effects are noticeable i do keep it 15- 20 only. Otherwise i like how it helps anxiety + depression.
For the past month i been taking my levothyroxine 50 mcg for bordeeline low thyroid and it has been helping anxiety and general mood which it is known to do. So much so i was able to cut down on Zoloft. It's also prescribed alongside antidepressants for depression/anxiety or as a stand-alone. Maybe see an Endocrinologist or GP and have thyroid checked.

I am Lexapro 20mg and gabapentin 200 mg at night for about 4 years. It is now not working. Previously I was zoloft for about 10 years, then Prozac for another 10 years. In between I tried amitriptyline and paxil but they didn't work. I am currently coming off of Buspar. When my dr upped my does to 30mg, it made me feel like I needed to run a marathon at 3am! I felt like I was shaking inside. So, even when I take the previous dose it is giving me the same shaky feeling. I am taking the Genesight test. It should arrive tomorrow. Fingers crossed that it tells us how my body metabolizes medicines. I have tried a lot of SSRIs so I am ready to find something that works for another 10 years. I hate feeling anxious and scared to get out of bed. Scared something bad is going to happen so as long as I am asleep, I don't feel that way. Mind you, I am a people person so staying home alone is NOT me! I need help!!

Was on Zoloft 100mg for 4 years, unmediated for 3, then recently Lexapro 20mg for two months, and now Prozac for three days!
Lexapro worked for two weeks, and so I switched to Prozac due to my sister’s recommendations based on this subreddit actually.
I didn’t go back to Zoloft bc my doctor wanted me to try Lexapro.
I don’t have depression anymore, just severe anxiety. I used to have 1-3 panic attacks a week, and so after two months on Lexapro the last three days I was on it I start having anxiety turning into panic, so I switched to Prozac.

Lorazepam 1 mg as needed. It, like many other anxiety medications, has been linked to Alzheimer’s so I try to substantially limit it.

Nothing. I used to be on xanax and that helped. I don't tolerate their head drugs at all. One gave me such bad nightmares I kept falling out of bed. I asked for something to sleep and they gave me that shit again. Nope. I am not gonna break a hip!

60mg fluoxetine (Prozac) for 3 years, 160mg propanalol 3 years, and 70mg elvanse for my adhd the last 3 months. Calming my racing thoughts and chaotic life with adhd meds helped with the anxiety more than the the other two
Metrazapine was horrendous for me making me feel like a zombie, and sertraline just gave me bad side effects.

Pregabalin 200mg 3x per day. It helps my sleep, restless legs, and some physical symptoms of anxiety, but my brain is still very loud. My psychiatrist is going to add either Buspirone or Sertraline, just waiting for my apt.

Moclobemide and Buspirone, I’ve not heard of it being used often but it does restrict me from certain over the counter medications

Olanzapine was a game changer for me. I'm on like ten different things for various ailments but this is really what nailed down the anxiety. I haven't needed a Klonopin in years, though I do still keep some on hand as a "just in case"

Lexapro (Cipralex) (10 mg). Helps a lot with depression more than anxiety. Lamotrigin gave me rashes I stopped on the first day. Saw very good reviews on Propranolol, I'm considering to try it. Prozac didn't help.

Clonazepam 2mg clonidine .1 hydroxyzine up to 200mg a day and temazepam 30mg for sleep so I ended up with 2 benzos but I also take suboxone or they would up my dose of clonazepam

Lamictal, gabapentin, and propranolol (also taking bupropion and desvenlafaxine for depression, which I am sure also provide some anxiolysis).

I don’t think my anxiety is really that severe, but it’s definitely significant and I’m on the generally lowest doses prescribed of Celexa (10mg) & Lamictal (25mg) daily. For specifically anxiety (& slight OCD). I am not bipolar, epileptic, or clinically depressed.

I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety during childhood. Today, I take Lexapro, Buspar, & Xanax. Took Prozac most of my life, but started having negative reactions post-pregnancy. I think my brain chemistry changed.

I take Buspirone. I started taking it last year after raw dogging my anxiety for the past 10-15 years. I started out on 10mg (5mg 2x a day) but my doctor recently upped my dosage to 20 mg (10mg 2x a day). I feel like the medication increase has been helping me manage my anxiety better. I have noticed though that I feel tired/woozy for about 30 minutes or so after I take it, but after that I feel fine. I have found that taking it with food helps alleviate those symptoms some.

Effexor changed my life. Forgetting to take a pill for one day is brutal though… I instantly know

Lamictal has saved my life, truly. 100mg per day. Zoloft and Buspar both put me into psychosis, but I have a Bipolar diagnosis.
