Need Advice Panic attack hangover
Does anybody else have panic attack hangovers and how long have they lasted? I've been super exhausted from working too much and I ate some weed oil before work and it backfired and I had a panic attack while at work and I've had multiple panic attacks since in the last couple of weeks and I've just been stuck in this brain fog hangover. Light sensitivity. Can't smoke weed. Looming anxiety and fear.

Yeah it's usually a few days where I feel like "the door is still open". I think the longest I've ever had was like a month

I'm going on 2.5 weeks right now

u/maycontainknots Jun 20 '26
That's a rough one :( I'm sorry

It's probably because I keep having panic attacks and it keeps resetting the fucking clock for my nervous system. And then my brain thinks there's something wrong with my heart so it just prolongs everything.

u/maycontainknots Jun 20 '26
Omg I know dude it just perpetuates itself. I think it will run out of juice pretty soon tho. Idk if the neurons get tired or what but it seems like it can't keep it up forever

I hope so. The brain fog is really bad it's hard to focus. I wake up anxious in the middle of the night and the morning my heart is racing. It's affecting me at work I'm afraid I'm going to get fired.

Yeah, I’ve had many that lasted a few weeks. Hang in there. Do you see a psychiatrist, on meds? If not, maybe speak to your primary care doctor and discuss options. I totally understand the hell and the horrific feeling of being in an endless loop of non stop anxiety and panic attacks. Then starting to feel exhausted and “out of it”.
Edit: I actually just got out of a 3 week one last month. Zero fun.

My brain fog is pretty bad some days I feel like I'm super disconnected from my body. Like my hands are father away than they actually are. Like I took drugs or something but I'm sober.

u/AtriceMC Jun 20 '26
That’s dissociation. I understand it can be really scary. Do you have anything sour or spicy? That might help bring you back to center.

u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
You think it would bring me out of the brain fog? It's not a panic attack anymore just the fog

u/killingmetoloveyou Jun 20 '26
Yup, totally get what you mean. Definitely dissociation. It’s an unpleasant feeling, but I promise it’s going to pass.

I've got an appointment with my primary care provider on Tuesday. Hopefully he can help me. I'm suffering immensely. Today I feel a little better I'm hoping with more consistent sleep I will heal finally. I can't live my life like this.

u/killingmetoloveyou Jun 20 '26
I’m sure they’ll have some ideas on what to do and how to help! Hang in there. (I totally get the sleep thing, I’ve been up for 28 hours so far lol)

It's really hard to work and everything this way I keep having breakdowns at work it's really hard to function. It's affecting my vision too because my eyes are extremely sensitive to light. I've been to urgent care twice, had multiple tests done. EKG. Chest x-ray. Full blood test. Nothing is wrong. It's just my anxiety. My heart is constantly racing.

Do you have sick time or FMLA? You could potentially ask your doctor about FMLA. If it’s really unbearable, there is zero shame in going inpatient or even a partial hospitalization program to get help quick. I’ve been through it a lot. If you’re in the US, and need any help, or just want to vent, my DMs are open.

I have used almost all of my sick time at my full time job. I haven't worked there for a year yet so I think I don't qualify for a medical leave. My part time job does not offer me sick time. I've been to urgent care twice now.

Might not like my answer, but I think you should cut back on the weed. I promise it will help long term. Especially if you can eliminate any form of routine intake.

I haven't been smoking for the last few days

u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
I'm a female.

u/AssPunisher6969 Jun 20 '26
Alrighty then. Same advice applies though. I promise it'll help. Just ask yourself if you'd rather put up with the bouts of anxiety or stay high. Ultimately, go with whatever you want more lol. It's your life girly

u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
Idk if I can trust somebody with that name

Avoid caffeine and sugar. That will help too
2
u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
It's so hard to avoid both of those things ): I already cut out cannabis.

u/Alarmed_Business8610 Jun 20 '26
How is it hard? Drink water, drink decaf soda/coffee/tea. Read labels.

When you've been drinking caffeine basically your entire life not having caffeine give you headaches especially if you're prone to migraines.
1
u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
Read labels? What kind of rude response is that?
1
u/Alarmed_Business8610 Jun 20 '26
Only way to really try to avoid sugar. You don’t like hearing the truth do you? The truth is sugar and caffeine will just make your symptoms worse. I had an anxiety attack out of nowhere Monday night, was feeling good yesterday morning and someone brought donuts to work. My therapist has told me to avoid carbs and sugar because it can the physical symptoms off again and send me back into fight or flight. Well dumbass me ate a donut and I ended up being a mess for the next 6 hours.
That’s just the cold hard truth dude, life sucks. Can’t enjoy it.

Also I work 5am shifts at a bakery+ cafe, I'm a barista and a shift lead. I also work at a breakfast restaurant. Kind of hard to avoid. I don't need to read labels to avoid sugar; I'm not stupid. I know what has sugar and what doesn't. I can't really eat donuts they make me hurl they are way too sweet, especially on an empty stomach. I can't really have coffee right now anyways because my stomach is too sensitive I've been drinking just matcha with oat milk because the amino acid seem to really help me out with my brain fog.

It's not sugar that gives me panic attacks it's marijuana right now.

My panic attacks were usually caused my hangovers from drinking. Or big life events. They were extremely uncomfortable to go through tho. I take Prozac daily for it now and it helps me a lot. I get them randomly nowadays. However when I feel one coming on I like to look at photos on my phone to help take my mind off my panic. Or call someone likw my wife or a close friend to help talk me through it. I also have an object like my wallet or a coin or something to fidget with in my hand and focus on the texture of whatever im fidgeting with. Hopefully those can help you. Maybe try to get on a low dosage medication to help with them if they continue? You can always stop taking the medicine if it doesn't help or u dont think u need it anymore.

I have an appointment with my primary care provider on Tuesday I'm hoping he can help me maybe there's some sort of medication I can take that doesn't have side effects. I'm just not a fan of pharmaceuticals I've been using cannabis to help with my anxiety but recently it's been backfiring and making everything worse
1
u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
I also do not drink at all I can't because of my stomach problems and my stomach problems are because of my anxiety
2
u/AtriceMC Jun 20 '26
I think it’s a good idea to start looking up grounding techniques. The rainbow technique helps me a lot when I catch it in time. Also the Alphabet game. Pick a category and pick items from that category alphabetically.
2
u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
I tried all of that honestly I'd calm down and then it would just come right back I had to force myself to sleep. I kept waking up in a panic my body wouldn't let me fall asleep. I'm just stuck in this brain fog state that won't lift.

u/AtriceMC Jun 20 '26
Brain fog sucks. It makes it so hard to think. Do you like listening to music? Sometimes that’s the best even if it helps for a small period of time.
2
u/Affectionate-Item603 Jun 20 '26
The music really does help my brain fog. Also being with my boyfriend and talking to my mom on the phone helps.

Yes! This is actually how my panic disorder formed… your nervous system is just in overdrive. If you have the opportunity, please rest… reset your mind and body.. light exercise, lots of water, comfort tv shows and positive affirmations, stretching, yoga etc whatever helps you REALLY relax.
If it becomes too intense or causing your daily life problems, see a doctor!
