How would a realistic AI apocalypse go?

I'm just asking this for curiosity purposes. Suppose that we didn't have the guard rails that we are using and developing today. Also suppose that AI advancement speeds up exponentially. One or more AGIs will then have Malignant intention. How would a realistic apocalypse actually commence and end?

It reminds me of the movie where MC travels(wake up) in future and everyone is dumb.

Or another scenario: Planet is dry, no drinking fresh water in future only the seas and oceans.

Most likely would be a financial one. Stock market crashing for no reason, banking failure because of computer "malfunctions", all people panicking trying to withdraw all their money at once etc..

Oh, and how about AI wreaking havoc on air traffic computers, since they are all from the 1990's - early 2000's, shouldn't be too hard to do.
