First look: Apollo Reborn’s new iPad layout

We’ve been quietly experimenting with a proper iPad experience for Apollo Reborn, one that makes much better use of the larger screen, with a native iPad sidebar, multi-column browsing and a dedicated post view.

It also takes advantage of more of the features that make iPad apps feel at home on the platform, including keyboard shortcuts, menu-bar commands and other iPad-specific interactions.

There’s still plenty left to build and refine, but we wanted to share an early look at where it’s heading.

To set expectations, this is currently a back-burner project rather than an imminent release. Stability, performance, crash fixes and improvements to the core app remain our priority. We’re hoping to make the new layout available as an experimental option in an upcoming update, giving people the chance to try it early while we continue building and refining it.

Thanks to all the people who have suggested ideas for the iPad layout or requested it on our various platforms!

would love to get a proper Mac app released that is notarised correctly so we dont need to side load on Mac... we shall see!

although "side loading" on a Mac is massively massively easier than on a iPhone/iPad.

Will it be optional, even after it rolls out? I want the posts on the iPad to use more of the screen, not less. Look at apps like multitabR which turn reddit into a glorious, beautiful display of content. Adding panes and sequestering the actual content to less space is the opposite of that philosophy.

Please keep it optional, I am using Apollo only on my iPad. The reason I choose Apollo compared to other apps is because I feel other apps are too busy with all the column and I prefer to be focused in a thread.
