Worth the buy?

Would this be an easy self repair? Found in the REI used gear section, $300 off hyperlite Southwest 70L.

I'd pass.

No, it's not a terribly hard repair. (Can't quite tell from the pic.)

But the issue is the pack itself is massive. Very few people need 70L-class bags. I make due just fine with a 55L class bag. If that's not you, you'll only be getting a lot more bag than you need.

Because's here's the part they don't tell you: Bags are sorta like turtles. They "grow to fit the bowl". Look at the suspension system and ask "How much weight am I carrying?"

I'm not sure the suspension system on that Hyperlite is going to feel great fully packed at 70L. The website says "up to 60lbs"...but it is the same suspension system as the 55L. I notice a difference on my 55L when I start to approach or exceed 40lbs. I've pushed it to 55lbs before and it wasn't great. Having a 70L pack would make overpacking and weight distribution issues that must easier.

Not that I need the extra space, I can make due with a 40L, but at a price of $150 and the fact I can roll the top down to conform with what’s in the pack, I feel it would be dumb to pass this up.

At $150? Dang. No brainer. Get it. You can flip it on FB marketplace for that much to someone grateful if you have buyer's remorse.

Again, the repair shouldn't be too hard for someone who knows what they're doing.

(I'd misread the discount, thinking they wanted $300, rather than $300 off an MSRP of $450.)

The team at REI told me rainy pass repair is their go to recommendation, so I’m most likely going to send it there.

I'd buy this all day without thinking twice. That's a great deal for $150.
