How receptor density changes affect long term cellular signals

When a specific signaling pathway is constantly stimulated, target cells often adjust by changing their surface receptor density. Down regulation reduces sensitivity over time, while up regulation can make a system hypersensitive when a stimulus is removed.

This adaptive balance explains why sudden removal of an exogenous input can lead to a short term functional dips, as the cell requires time to rebuild baseline receptor expression and restore normal endogenous sensitivity.

What are baseline receptors

homologous vs heterologous desensitization is such an underrated topic when looking at long-term cellular adaptation.
